This article is about the musical theme of Marx. For the character himself, see Marx. For the Stadium from Kirby Air Riders, see VS. Boss.

"Vs. Marx"[2][3] (also called "Meddlesome Marx"[4]) is a musical piece composed by Jun Ishikawa. It serves as the boss battle theme of Marx, first appearing in Milky Way Wishes from Kirby Super Star.

Composition[edit]

The battle against the Meddlesome Marx.

"Vs. Marx" is notable for its frequently changing time signatures:

  • Intro: 2 bars of 6/8
  • Section 1 (twice): 1 bar of 7/8, 1 of 6/8, 1 of 9/8, 1 of 6/8, 2 of 5/8, then 2 of 6/8
  • Section 2: 2 bars of 6/8, 2 of 5/8, and 2 of 6/8
  • Section 3: 2 bars of 5/8, 1 of 6/8, 1 of 5/8, then 4 of 6/8

Notably, Section 3 partially incorporates the main melody from the boss battle theme from Kirby Super Star, albeit altered to fit the time signatures.

Although its key is more stable than its time signature, the latter still changes several times during the track: starting in F minor (with many elements of harmonic minor, such as a very recurrent E natural), the theme modulates to G minor for its second section, before ending in C minor.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby Super Star[edit]

The original version of "Vs. Marx" appears during the final boss battle in Milky Way Wishes. It is titled "Meddlesome Marx" (Track #10) on the Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition Compilation Soundtrack.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

"Vs. Marx" from Super Smash Bros. Brawl by Yasunori Mitsuda.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, "Vs. Marx" is rearranged by Yasunori Mitsuda. It's an unlockable music theme for the Halberd stage. This remix plays Section 3 twice, and uses electric guitar. After Section 3, it incorporates "Kirby's Triumphant Return".

The Brawl remix, along with the Halberd stage, reappear in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

The Brawl remix is also in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where it can be played on any Kirby stage. It is unlocked via Vault's Shop, and plays when battling Marx in Classic Mode (as Kirby, Rosalina & Luma, and Sephiroth) and World of Light (as any character).

Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

"Marx Soul Appears" from Kirby Super Star Ultra.

In Kirby Super Star Ultra, "Vs. Marx" is remixed with Nintendo DS sound chip, like the other remixed Kirby Super Star tracks. It also plays when battling Marx Soul. Additionally, the music that plays during the cutscene "Marx Soul Appears", which plays before fighting Marx Soul in The True Arena, contains a segment of "Vs. Marx."

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

A brief remix of "Vs. Marx" is used as Marx's Dream Friend jingle in Kirby Star Allies. This jingle is titled "Hey, Hey, it's Marx!" on Nintendo Music, and was arranged by Hirokazu Ando. It can be found as track 133 in the Jukebox as of version 4.0.0.

During Morpho Knight's battle in Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! and The Ultimate Choice, if player 1 is Marx, Morpho Knight's theme will be replaced by a new orchestral remix of "Vs. Marx". This version is titled "Vs. Marx — Star Allies Dream Ver." on Nintendo Music. It was arranged by the original composer, Jun Ishikawa, and can be found as track 176 in the Jukebox as of version 4.0.0.

Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

The original version from Kirby Super Star can be unlocked as a race song, named "Kirby Super Star: Memorial Song 3", by reaching Gourmet Rank 125.

Kirby Air Riders[edit]

In Kirby Air Riders, a new orchestral arrangement of "Vs. Marx", here parsed "VS. Marx", can be heard when fighting Marx in the VS. Boss Stadium mode. A similar arrangement with more synthetic instrumentation plays during the fight against Galactic Nova during the true ending of Road Trip, and when the riders enter Galactic Nova in the Air Ride course of the same name. In My Music, this arrangement is grouped together with an arrangement of "Milky Way Wishes: Shooting" as a single track titled "Galactic Nova". The version heard during the second half of the final boss battle and the interior of the Galactic Nova course begins with a siren similar to the cutscene from Milky Way Wishes in the original Kirby Super Star where Galactic Nova itself appears before Kirby before Marx steals Kirby's wish and becomes his true form, with the same siren heard near the end of the first half of "Galactic Nova" prior to the transition to the second half.

Other appearances[edit]

A medley of Kirby Super Star music was performed live at the Japanese concert GAME MUSIC CONCERT 5 by Symphony Orchestra in 1995, later released on CD in 1996. The event was officially sponsored by Nintendo. This medley was the first performance of the concert and included "Vs. Marx", as well as "Gourmet Race" and "Kirby's Triumphant Return". It was arranged by Akira Miyagawa and conducted by Hiroshi Miyagawa.

The original version of "Vs. Marx" was included in the compilation album The Very Best of Kirby: 52 Hit Tracks.

The theme is also featured in the second half of the bonus track ボスバトルメドレー/エレクトロニックver. (Boss Battle Medley / Electronic Ver.) from the Kirby Ultra Super Deluxe Original Sound Track, arranged by Jun Ishikawa. Interestingly, while the other two sections of the song use the original song's time signatures, the third section is completely in 4/4, making it sound a lot like the boss theme from Kirby Super Star.

The theme was played live in the Kirby 25th Anniversary Orchestra Concert, as one of the last songs in the "Kirby Super Star Medley".

In The Sound of Kirby Café 2, the theme is featured in track 3, マリオネットキッチン (Marionette Kitchen). It appears as a medley alongside "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler", completely transposed to 4/4. This medley was arranged by Megumi Ohara.

The theme was performed live at the Kirby 30th Anniversary Music Festival as part of the "Kirby Finale Battle Fest" medley, along with "Final Boss" from Kirby's Adventure, "0² Battle", "C-R-O-W-N-E-D", "Fatal Blooms in Moonlight", and "Vagrant Counting Song of Retrospection". This version was also completely transposed to 4/4.
