"Bouncing Boss Battle"[1][2] is a musical piece composed by Hirokazu Ando and serves as the regular boss battle theme in Kirby: Triple Deluxe.

Composition[edit]

Battling a bouncing boss.

"Bouncing Boss Battle" is an upbeat piece in the style of big-band jazz, featuring a brass section, an upright bass, a piano, a drum kit, and electronic instruments such as a clavinet. It is set in G minor and 4/4, and at a tempo of 125 BPM with rapid syncopated sixteenth-notes, it is quite fast-paced. The piece is primarily a heavy rearrangement of the third section of "Floral Fields", one of the main leitmotifs of Kirby: Triple Deluxe. This motif is present from the brass section's intro, where it's limited to the first three notes repeating and rising for a miniature climax. Accompanied by improvisational piano and bass support, the first section consists of the third phrase of "Floral Fields" playing in full alternating with the shortened version from the intro. This plays twice, the second time an octave above. With little to no transition, a new motif is introduced for the second section: it is vaguely similar to the first section of "Floral Fields", featuring a long first note and falling response, followed by a slowly descending trill-like resolution. Once this section is played twice with different instrumentation, a transitional section consisting of a more spaced out version of the intro follows, after which the track loops.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

Being the regular boss theme, "Bouncing Boss Battle" is used in the boss battles against Flowery Woods, Paintra, Kracko, Coily Rattler, and Pyribbit in both Story Mode and Dededetour. The song can be found as Track 15 in the game's Jukebox.

The intro of "Bouncing Boss Battle" is featured at the end of the opening cutscene theme "Waking to a Flowery Coup!", Track 2 in the Jukebox.

An arrangement of "Bouncing Boss Battle" is also used in the sub-game Kirby Fighters, as the battle transition theme for Shadow Kirby in the Single-Player campaign. This arrangement was also done by Hirokazu Ando, and can be found as Track 52 in the Jukebox.

The material from this theme forms the musical backbone of "Fatal Blooms in Moonlight", Flowered Sectonia's battle music. It can be considered a more dramatic, orchestral rearrangement of "Bouncing Boss Battle" that also quotes the Dreamstalk's motif from "Under the Sunshine" and the recurring "Spring Smash Factory" motif. Similarly, "Bouncing Boss Battle" is predominant in the second half of "She Who Holds the Stars", the cutscene theme preceding said battle.
