"Miracle Matter"[2] is a theme from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, and Miracle Matter's theme. It was composed by Jun Ishikawa.[1]
Composition[edit]

"Miracle Matter" is an intense drum-and-bass song that has no real melody. It features the same structure and progression as "Boss", and begins with a variant on that song's intro.[3] The sampled drum loop is taken from the "Boss" theme with mechanical sounds from "Studying the Factory" overlaid. This is not coincidental — Jun Ishikawa, the composer of "Miracle Matter", learned about the boss very late in development, and had to make a theme fast. Thus, he chose to modify "Boss" (reusing the drum loop and parallel shifting the chords) and added the existing waveforms from "Studying the Factory". He noted that the designer was pleased by how the song lacked a melody.[4] Indeed, while a brass melody set in C Phrygian dominant is audible just after the halfway point of each loop, the percussion (including the occasional appearance of a timpani going between C, G, and E-flat) and bass line (going almost entirely between C and C-sharp, only hitting G to mark the end of each second bar) dominate the arrangement by all measures, with the occasional orchestra hit (going between C and B-flat for most of the theme).
Game appearances[edit]
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]

"Miracle Matter" first appears in this game, playing when Kirby fights Miracle Matter. It can be found as Music 20 in the Sound Check, which interestingly, is also the number of Miracle Matter's sides. It also appears right after "Boss", the theme it derives from.
Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition[edit]
In New Challenge Stages, the original version of "Miracle Matter" is one of two possible themes that can play in Smash Combat Chamber EX.
Kirby Star Allies[edit]
The original song is reused for the Rocky ambush and Chef Kawasaki mid-boss battle in Sector B. It appears as track 087 in the game's Jukebox.
In addition, "Miracle Matter" is remixed, along with "0² Battle" and "Ripple Star: Stage Select", for the battle against Morpho Knight when the player 1 is Adeleine & Ribbon, serving as the transitional element. This arrangement is titled "The Girls Who Fought the Darkness", was done by Hirokazu Ando, and can be found as track 178 in the Jukebox.
Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]
The original version, named "Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards: Memorial Song 2" in-game, appears as a track that can be played during races and Free Rolling upon reaching Gourmet Rank 118.
Other appearances[edit]
Oddly, while the original version is not included in the Kirby 64 Original Soundtrack, it is club-mixed with "Neo Star: Stage Select", "Boss", and Kirby's voice samples in the track Club Mix ボスたち (Club Mix - Bosses). This arrangement was done by Shinji Yoshimura.
The original version of "Miracle Matter" was also included in the compilation album The Very Best of Kirby: 52 Hit Tracks.
