"Friendly Field"[1] is the theme for the stage with the same name from Kirby Star Allies, as well as one of the game's main motifs. It was composed by Jun Ishikawa.
Composition[edit]

"Friendly Field" is a cheerful theme in F major and 4/4. It starts off with an intro consisting of a fanfare-like full cadence, followed by springy accompaniment punctuated by a tuba. The intro presents the main melody's intonations in a modified form, played by bells and an oboe, as well as a percussive pattern of three consecutive notes which adds playfulness throughout the piece. The melody itself, relegated to a flute, consists of two elements: a rising tonic triad in second inversion (a trait notably shared with "A New Wind for Tomorrow"), and a second, narrower and quicker descending phrase with added xylophone, featuring repeated notes reminiscent of "Peanut Plains". The melody is repeated and varied by a clarinet.
Due to its harmonic function, the melody does not find immediate resolution, and is instead developed in a sweet lyrical section by strings as the flute takes on a smoother counterpoint, akin to "Grass Land 3"'s second section. The second element soon reaches its peak in development, going through a full cadence with harmonic subdominant harmonies. The intro's fanfare serves as the start of the third section's new melody, first played by a trumpet, and then strings; it is derived from the second element but spans significantly wider, thus giving it tonal stability. This section serves as a climax of all the ideas presented in the piece: the wide range of the first element, rhythm of the second, three consecutive notes in the percussion and harmonic major. As the melody ends rhythmically stretched on a dominant, the intro repeats for the track to loop.
Game appearances[edit]
Kirby Star Allies[edit]
In Kirby Star Allies, "Friendly Field" plays in the eponymous stage, and can found as track 023 in the game's Jukebox. In addition, the theme presents one of the main motifs of the game, serving as the basis of "Twinkle☆Stars" and appearing in the following tracks:
- "A Rude Awakening" — the opening cutscene theme and track 004, features elements of "Friendly Field"'s first section (that allude to "Suite: The Star-Conquering Traveler") following "King Dedede's Theme", as well as a more proper quotation at the end of the track.
- "World of Peace: Dream Land" — track 005, a serene arrangement based on the first section that plays in the level hub for World of Peace: Dream Land, the first level accessed in Story Mode.
- "Ending Ad Bumper!" — track 020, a short jingle based on the third section that plays when one of the eyecatches appear.
- "Friends Goal!" — track 026, a short jingle based on the first section that plays when reaching the Goal Door in Story Mode stages.
- "Fortress of Shadows: Jambastion!" — track 044, a minor arrangement based on "World of Peace: Dream Land" that plays in the level hub for Jambastion; has its own arrangement by Yuuta Ogasawara.
- "Adventures in Jambastion" — track 047, the stage theme for Eastern Wall and Longview Corridor. A loose minor arrangement of "Friendly Field" with elements of "Twinkle☆Stars".
- "True Friends Stand with You" — track 055, the stage theme for Inner Sanctum and Heavenly Hall. A further arrangement of "Adventures in Jambastion" with "Kirby's Triumphant Return".
- "New Mode Unlocked!" — track 103, a jingle based on the third section that plays upon unlocking new modes, collecting an All-Up Heart in Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! or clearing one of the first seven difficulties of The Ultimate Choice.
- "Hall of Worship" — track 107, an eerie arrangement that plays during the cutscene before the battle with Hyness. While its melody is a distorted version of "Friendly Field", the instrumentation and accompaniment are taken from "Path of Worship".
- "Suite: The Star-Conquering Traveler" — tracks 114 (full version) and 215, 219, 221, 227 (1st, 3rd, 4th and Closing Movements), music for various phases of Void Termina and Void's boss battles. A minor variant of "Friendly Field"'s first phrase serves primarily as the intro and/or transitional sections of said movements.
- "Having Watched You All Along" — music for Kirby's Curtain Call and track 119. The second half of the first section of "Friendly Field" appears near the start of this track.
