Day 8, for [personal profile] resonant: Some characters you love as characters and couldn't bear to spend five minutes with if they were real people?

This was surprisingly difficult for me. I kind of distinguish between villains that I love as villains (Kronos, Thrawn, [12 Monkeys character redacted], Lilah Morgan), villains I find genuinely lovable and possibly redeemable (Crowley, Catra), and characters I genuinely love, but wouldn't want to be around even for five minutes.

In the last category...

Boyd Crowder (Justified)
I genuinely love him, and can see the tragic aspect of the man he became, but wouldn't want to be around him for even five minutes, because a) likelihood of getting shot, high, and b) welll...everything else. Outside of those particular stories I read guiltily, I don't actually believe he's redeemable.

Deacon (12 Monkeys)
I'm already starting to see a pattern, here. The level of violence and cynicism these guys bring to the party is just too much for lil ol me. Too stressful. But I love him! In the right circumstances, I would be cool with hanging out with Deacon, but the likelihood of those circumstances seems low.

Sonny Steelgrave (Wiseguy)
See above! But I wouldn't mind being in the same room as him as an unnoticed observer. :) Would be good for the entertainment value. (I thought Al Swearengen would fit in this category, too...although, actually, I would probably enjoy meeting him.)

Charles Vane (Black Sails)
Yup, a definite pattern. Although...hm. Okay, I can think of one way I would like to spend five minutes with him.

Angel (Angel)
What would we talk about? We would both be SUPER awkward.

Most of my fandoms, I love them all too much for this list! Would I be embarrassingly tongue-tied around most of them? Absolutely. Would I be nervous around Hannibal Lecter? Yes. But it would be worth it.

If you haven't already, please pick a day and ask me anything you like. ♥
killabeez: (Default)
Sure, why not?

1. Your main fandom of the year?
Definitely 12 Monkeys, in terms of time and interest, though I continue to produce very little in the way of fannish content.

2. Your favorite film you watched this year? Dune

3. Your favourite book read this year? I'm still not finding much time to read. I did enjoy One Last Stop and The Invention of Wings.

4. Your favourite album or song to listen to this year? Been listening to lots of jazz and chill house music as background, but not a lot intentionally. However, I got mildly obsessed with a song called "I Found" (Amber Run) and have like 8 versions of it. Also been listening to Michael Malarkey a ton.

5. Your favourite TV show of the year? Ted Lasso

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year? Mostly rediscovering old favorites. I spent a couple of months wildly obsessed with Justified (again). Was it this year that I watched Spartacus for the first time? That was great. (Thank you, [personal profile] destina !) And I've been fannish enough about Ted Lasso to read a story here and there. (Pretty much entirely Keeley/Roy/Jamie and Keeley/Rebecca)

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year? Hmm...I think everything was pleasantly undisappointing, in general! I really liked Black Widow, and Dune, and the Matrix movie. Season 2 of Ted Lasso was awesome. Dexter: New Blood is okay, but my expectations weren't high, so not disappointed I guess. If I had to pick one, it'd be S3 of Lost in Space. I'd been really looking forward to it, but only found myself mildly interested. Never mind, scratch that, after squeeing with Destina about the stuff that was great, I've decided it was exactly what it needed to be, and I was just grumpy that day. :D.

8. Your fandom boyfriend(s) of the year? Raylan Givens (Justified) and Roy Kent (Ted Lasso)

9. Your fandom girlfriend(s) of the year?
Jennifer Goines (12 Monkeys) and Rosa Ortecho (Roswell, NM)

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Pretty much all of S3 of Roswell, NM. Especially the Malex parts, of course, but also, my Rosa & Isobel & Maria feelings! My found family feelings! Oh, and that photo of Brett Goldstein and Phil Dunster cuddling on the red carpet, wherever that is—I can't seem to Google the right one at the moment.

11. The most missed of your old fandoms?
I didn't have time to miss anything, honestly, just my own participation in them. :) But feeling nostalgic for ST:TOS for reasons.

12. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
Nothing new. Just want more time/inspiration/motivation to participate in the ones I already have, especially—

13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
STAR TREK STRANGE NEW WORLDS, BABY! (and also Disco S4 which I haven't started yet.)

ETA: Looking at my fandom bfs and gfs for the year, I am laughing, because wow, do I have a type in both cases!
killabeez: (Duncan Methos negative space)
It feels like everyone is holding their breath. I know I am.

[community profile] hlh_shortcuts reveals happened, and I'm so pleased that my little Highlander/Justified pinch hit for[personal profile] hafital seems to have gone over reasonably well. That was a quick one! Thank goodness she mentioned Justified in her signup, and I had just finished rewatching the series a few days before. It's always a little nerve-wracking to write in a new fandom—especially one with such distinctive character voices. Of course, now I seem to be embroiled in a sequel that wants to run away with the bit.

Speaking of which, my assignment certainly threatened to do the same. It's always fun to write for [archiveofourown.org profile] dkwiliams and the last time I wrote for her, it was a pinch hit, romantic comedy sort of a thing, so I had the brilliant idea to try and do something similar. I have no idea why I thought I could map Duncan and Methos onto When Harry Met Sally, but as they say, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Fandoms: Highlander: The Series, Justified ~3,200 words
Pairing: Duncan/Methos (outsider POV)
Duncan MacLeod/Methos (Highlander), Raylan Givens, Duncan MacLeod, Methos, Joe Dawson, Rachel Brooks, Crossover, POV Outsider, Established Relationship, Hurt/Comfort, Post-Canon, Canon-Typical Violence, No Archive Warnings Apply

Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens has experienced some strange situations in his career, but none of them prepared him for this.

Fandoms:Highlander: The Series  ~13,200 words
Pairing: Duncan/Methos
Duncan MacLeod/Methos, Amanda Darieux/Nick Wolfe, Joe Dawson & Methos, Joe Dawson & Duncan MacLeod, Amanda Darieux & Duncan MacLeod, Amanda Darieux & Methos, Connor MacLeod, Ceirdwyn, Romantic Comedy, Shameless use of Casablanca, and When Harry Met Sally, Basically it's just shameless, First Time, Post-Canon, Minor Gina/Robert deValicourt, Minor Kate/Nick Sutherland, No Archive Warnings Apply

For millennia, Methos had one rule when it came to other Immortals: Don't get too close. Then he met Duncan MacLeod.

- I think I finished that HL vid for Escapade. Read more... )

- I tried something new at the gym last week—one of these things. Spoiler, this is NOT something that someone with lower spine problems should attempt. Jeez, self. OW. Hoping that the inflammation will subside soon. :P Frustrating!

- So far behind on all the television. I'm loving Agent Carter, liking Constantine, intrigued by 12 Monkeys, anxious about Elementary, kinda bored by Sleepy Hollow, mostly enjoying Justified, a little annoyed at Grimm, bored and frustrated by The Musketeers, missing Lost Girl, moderately pleased by Supernatural, and really, really far behind on The 100. Only about 2-3 episodes behind on everything else—including the HL rewatch. This is too much TV.

- I need a clone.

- Wishing a happy birthday to [personal profile] franzeska, with many wishes for a better 2015!

In case it's not obvious, my fannish production has dropped off drastically in the last year and a half.

The short version of why )

ANYWAY. Long story short—out of sheer stubbornness, I finished a vid last night for the first time since November 2011. Might not be great, and it was just a movie vid, but I finished, so yay for that. That was one tough horse to remount, let me tell you, and thank you to everyone who answered my Hunger Games poll and encouraged. :) To celebrate, I watched the most recent episode of Supernatural...

SPN 8.19 )

Can't decide whether I should try working on the Club Vivid vid idea I want to do, or take one last stab at my [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang (which was mostly rendered obsolete and unnecessary by [livejournal.com profile] zempasuchil's gorgeous Rome Was Also Built on Ruins)—or else finally jump into writing some Haven or Lost Girl fic. The CV idea I adore, but it's far more ambitious than the little vid I just finished, and a lot more source, and the likelihood of making the deadline seems slim. RL is about to crash down on my head pretty hard, I suspect. It just feels good to have finished something, though, and it's giving me delusions of fannish productiveness. Plus, it's for Treme, and my heart is still in New Orleans.

Totally random fannish question for the day: When did Warehouse 13 get awesome? I caught an episode by accident the other day, and it was pretty great. Now tempted to go back and catch up. (I blame Tumblr for this, because I keep seeing drop-dead gorgeous and adorable gifs of Jamie Murray, and I'm only human, okay?)

In other fannish news, Grimm continues to make me super-happy with its team dynamics, and the last episode of Lost Girl was made of win. Justified went out strong, and there's a new Vikings tonight! [livejournal.com profile] karmenghia asked me yesterday about a very old Star Trek vid (circa 2002) that [livejournal.com profile] tjonesy and I made, so I found it and uploaded it. In case you're bored or want a trip down nostalgia lane:

The Man's Too Strong (35Mb QT download)
Fandom: Star Trek (TOS and TNG)
Pairing: Kirk/Spock

I seem to be very parenthetical and random today, and if I let myself, might ramble on for days. Lack of sleep and too much coffee. Hi, good morning. What are you up to today?

...and one more thing I wanted to share with you Justified fans, in case you didn't see it:

3 Times Rachel... by [livejournal.com profile] happywriter06

A lovely little Raylan/Rachel story that made me incredibly happy. More of this, please, show!

Dear Yuletide Authors: So much amazing Haven fic! I'm totally gorging myself on it, and it's delicious!

I've loved almost everything I've clicked on so far. Here's a scrumptious sampling:

Haven )

Justified )

Deadwood )

Lost Girl )

As if all that delicious bounty isn't enough, I'm busy bookmarking all my favorite [livejournal.com profile] hlh_shortcuts stories here, but honestly, I've enjoyed every single one of them. Too much talent and skill, man. It's rather awesome. There's also been an embarrassment of utterly gorgeous SPN stories posted this week, as well. Here are some specific do-not-miss recs for both:

Highlander )

Supernatural )

ETA2: And after reading lots of Haven fic and linking to my glorious HL gift story, I have realized that I need Haven amnesia!fic like mad. That might have to happen.
killabeez: (Haven threesome)
Double whammy of bad news this morning. I'm gonna follow [personal profile] movies_michelle's example, because, yeah, me too—fandom was the second biggest source of joy in my life this year.

So, the fannish end of the year meme... )

You know what you should not do while trying to finish a story? Read awesome fic. I think it kills the soul a little bit. Sure is fun, though.

ETA: AHAHA, Hulu.com wins for best April Fool's web joke I've seen so far. Check it out. Highlander! The X-Files! The Dana Carvey show! Sign our guestbook! Heeee.

There's been a lot of awesome fanservice on my TV this week. Hawaii 5-0, White Collar, Justified (though I haven't seen last night's yet), Supernatural -- all are still making me really happy. Is there something in the water?

Been working on my [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang. Up to 12k words... likely to be at least 30k before done. I'm getting to that point where I really wish I had a beta/cheerleader who shares my current mindset about the show and also doesn't hate the storyline of this thing so I could have someone to talk to about it. In the absence of that, I went and read comments on the first story for encouragement -- and realized that there are a bunch of comments there I never answered. WTHell? Okay, I did move cross-country then, but still. Made of fail. You should have seen my face.

An aside: If you are as hard on yourself as I am about writing, and I know many of you are, you should make a habit of going back to read old feedback and comments. I never think to do that, and I embarrassed the hell out of myself, but it sure was motivational.

I want to make several posts about panels and such at Escapade, but first, a post about the Escapade Saturday night vidshow. For those who got the DVDs, [livejournal.com profile] feochadn is responsible for the festive and stylish graphics, and the photographs used for them. She also (with help from [personal profile] melina and [personal profile] mlyn and I'm not sure who else? But not me!) made the vidshow itself flow smoothly and look and sound very nearly as perfect as possible.

My part of the job was to compose the show and master the DVDs. Since a few people asked me, I'll clarify that this year's show was about 50/50 submitted vids and requested vids. There have been many comments over the years about shows that were light on favorite fandoms, or light on slash vids, so this year I took the bit and ran with it a little, and composed a show that I thought would please the majority of the attendees and show an interesting variety of tones, fandoms, characters, musical styles, etc. while keeping in mind that this is very much a slash con. It was really interesting to see how that played out, and how the attendees responded. Maybe I learned some stuff. Let's hope! I do know that I adored this show and all the vidders who contributed, whether on their own or at my pleading.

I received several comments that people really enjoyed the combination submission-based/curated vidshow, because it included a lot of variety, plenty of slash (and nearly all of our current favorite fandoms), and a good pace/show length. These comments were so valuable-- thank you! ETA: Because I had a couple of people ask me, I've indicated:

* = Vid submitted to the show (as oppposed to requested by me)
** = Premiering vid submitted to the show

A general comment from me about something I noticed at the vid review: the vast majority of these vids were stronger as the vid went on. This became quite apparent to me as we watched about the first minute of each vid, then turned it off to talk about it. It makes sense, that we'd save all the best stuff for the end of the vid -- but it sort of made me wonder if we should concentrate a bit more on winning our audience over in that first minute, especially in a multifandom con setting. Vids that stood out to me as not sharing this unbalanced weaker-at-the-beginning feeling were "Running Up That Hill," "The Humbling River," "Something's Gotta Give," and "Mama Said Knock You Out" -- which, interestingly, received some of the most universally positive feedback and reaction from the audience. I don't think this is coincidence.

Smutcutter and M'lyn ran the vid review. They identified several vids that they wanted to talk about, and then we spent the last twenty minutes or so taking requests from the audience. I wrote down what people said, but not who said it, and tried to clarify the context a bit. So, what follows are the notes I took more or less as things were said, pretty close to unvarnished except where I tried to contextualize the sense of the conversation.

Read comments from the Vid Review panel on Sunday )

That was a lot of coding, and I'm pretty wiped out, so please let me know if I made any mistakes in the links or anything. And please do feed the vidders, if you can!
killabeez: (Appaloosa - Virgil and Everett)
I'm reading Blue-Eyed Devil, the fourth (and last) book in the Appaloosa series.

"Don't you got any rules, Everett?"

"Don't think much about it," I said. "Mostly I just follow yours."

Virgil smiled slightly and looked at me silently for a while.

Then he said, "Good."

♥!

Was thinking about doing that "titles in your WIP folder" meme, then realized I did it a while back. Yeah, that was four and a half years ago, and only three stories on that list got written/finished. Oops? Worse, there are only about 4-5 new files in that folder. It's been a rough few years.

In Supernatural news, I just realized that a vid song I've been hanging onto since "In My Time of Dying" now finally fits -- and isn't the POV that I thought it was at all. Huh.

Didn't watch Southland yet, but I finally watched this week's Hawaii 5-0 and Justified.

Hawaii 5-0 1x17 )

Justified 2x01 )

And to complete this disjointed post, three vid recs:

Running Up That Hill by [livejournal.com profile] gwyn_r (Prison Break)
I've seen a few vids to this gorgeous Placebo cover over the years, but none that ever lived up to the song. This one does.

Forget by [livejournal.com profile] darlapr0duction (ST:Reboot/TOS)
Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] awarrington for reccing this to me! It's pretty amazing, especially for somebody like me, who's so attuned to and obsessed with voices. I've seen several vids lately that used dialogue really well, but this one puts it front and center in a way that I can't believe no one's thought to do for this particular fandom before. Very effective.

Fudge You by [livejournal.com profile] deirdre_c (Supernatural)
Okay, I confess I see next to no actual evidence of Sam/Castiel on the show, but this is adorable and cleverly done. Made me laugh, a lot. Jealous Dean? Incredibly charming and ridiculously cute. I could do with more of him.
killabeez: (beeeez)
Just had a call from my mom that my grandma has pneumonia, isn't responding to medication, and they are calling hospice now. I talked briefly to my grandma, and she knew my voice, though it sounded like it hurt her to talk. I'm glad it will be fast. She's been uncomfortable and in pain for most of the last two years, and her condition has deteriorated steadily, so it's time. Still, it hurts my heart.

Been having a hard time enjoying much of fandom lately, and I was sort of thinking of asking this anyway, but now I really need it for later today. I would love some recs for first-time stories in a select handful of fandoms, particularly if they have some heft to them and tend toward the slow-build type of story, and if they're romantic or make you feel good. Do you guys have any recs for particular favorites of the following variety?

- Hawaii Five-O (Steve/Danny)
- Fringe (Lincoln/Olivia, or Lincoln/Charlie/Olivia, but NOT Fauxlivia)
- Sherlock BBC (Sherlock/John)
- Friday Night Lights (Jason/Tim if it ends happy and doesn't make me want to kill myself)
- Lost Girl (Bo/Kenzi or Bo/Dyson/Kenzi)

shows I am watching, and shows I am not watching - a few spoilers for shows in tags )

I really screwed up something on ksarchive.com yesterday. It's been under attack by spambots and in cleaning up bogus accounts, I accidentally deleted a legitimate user's account. Ugh. She was so nice about it, too. Better than I deserve.

Also in menstrual agony. Mentally preparing self for trip to mom and dad's. Send chocolate, stat.

This took me a lot longer than 30 days. I guess it would have gone faster if I had just answered the questions, instead of rambling on, but that would have been a lot less fun.

Just so they'll all be in one place )

For Days 29 and 30, I switched things up because "saddest character death" is too much of a bummer to end on. Also, if you don't count my entries for The Wire, very few characters of color ended up represented here, and that sucks. So how about:
