and i ain't got no worries 'cause i ain't in no hurry at all
Jul. 15th, 2026 06:59 pmYesterday, I made a key lime pie, and this morning, I had it for breakfast, because that is what I do on my birthday! (And Thanksgiving - pie for breakfast is a Thanksgiving tradition in my family.) Here's the recipe I used:
( key lime pie recipe )
I just bought a premade graham cracker crust though, so it was even easier than it sounds.
I also started clearing out some clothes I no longer wear or that no longer fit etc., one drawer a day to keep it manageable.
For dinner, I made the King Arthur small batch focaccia, but for some reason it stuck to the pan. It was still delicious, just annoying. I still recommend the recipe, just maybe not on a 95°F day. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Mostly, I've been reading fic and scrolling on tumblr - it's been a good, relaxing day.

The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery (1926)
Jul. 15th, 2026 08:04 amRecently, a conversation with
skieswideopen revealed that I'd never read The Blue Castle (1926) by L.M. Montgomery. I had thought that I'd long since read all of her fiction, the Anne books as a kid and the rest from my college library, but clearly not quite. So I picked up a copy from my local public library -- a rather nice slightly oversized facsimile edition printed in 2017, actually: photographs of the pages of an original, not a new typesetting -- squeezed in among the YA paperbacks (none of Montgomery's other books are shelved in that section). There are no blurbs on the back or inside to set the stage for a YA reader who may not recognize the author's name; I wonder whether it's finding its readers without those.
It's very unlike most of Montgomery's tales in that the protagonist, Valency, begins as a grown-up (29 years old) and that it's set in Ontario and spends a deal of time towns and cities. It's not all unlike Montgomery's stories in the structural course it charts: Valency suffers as an "old maid" in an extended family that has no use, respect, or affection for her, and then something happens such that she takes charge of her life, adventure and delight ensue, experiences a wrenching twist or two, and finally a happy ending. There's a nice romance, but that's not the main point. And of course the book is compellingly well-written, pulling the reader eagerly along.
Montgomery pulls an expert trick expertly here. She drops enough foreshadowing hints to make the reader expect one certain twist, and then, boom, delivers a completely different twist that completely overshadows the expected one (though that one also comes; it just no longer matters), while still plugging into a different set of even milder, vaguer, foreshadowing hints. (One loose string: the book never explicates what the chemical smells coming from Barney's workroom actually are, though it easily could have. Deliberate tease to the reader, accidental omission, or me not being clever enough to pin down some vintage clue? I have decided on my head!canon.)
The eponymous castle is a figment of Valency's imagination, her escape from her dreary, plodding routine under her relatives' thumbs; the castle becomes a symbol of her inner life. The copy I borrowed has a literal blue castle on its cover, a loose line and ink-wash sketch of a fortress on a mountain bluff with tiny human figures suggested in its walled courtyard (and modern-ish chimneys on the roof in the familiar way of surviving UK manor houses; it must be a real building somewhere). This illustration goes uncredited anywhere in or on the volume. I wonder whether it, like its facsimile pages, may actually come from something near the original.

Can I blame any of this stuff on Merc Retro?
Jul. 15th, 2026 10:04 amThe Toronto sky is an eerie shade of Luminous Apocalypse Orange this morning because of the wildfires. I just got an email from our condo corp. saying that the building's makeup air system is being temporarily shut down for the safety of residents "until air quality conditions improve," whenever that might be.
Plus our accounting firm just fired us (along with all their other personal income-tax clients) because of not enough staff bringing in not enough money from not enough high-net-worth clients, which apparently is all our fault. :( So now I have to start canvassing friends and colleagues to try to find a CPA firm that will think we're worth bothering with.
And two friends are in a snit with each other, which means that I'm hearing about it from each of them, which I absolutely do not want.
My housekeeper is here today, so at least I'll be able to feel sorry for myself and everyone else in a clean, tidy apartment. Also, it's Wine Wednesday, which should improve my mood somewhat (though I'll have to wait until dinnertime for that to happen).

Talking in my sleep at night
Jul. 14th, 2026 08:27 pmSo I was a bit wrong in my last post when I said Hazel had been here for 3 weeks; it turns out it was only 2, which means that now she is at almost 2 months with me. I've learned a lot about her, and she is quite a little minx kitty and a rascal, but also the sweetest little girl in the world. She loves to meet new people, and will run to the back door to greet me sometimes (occasionally though the running is to try to escape). She is also very aggressive about getting me out of bed in the morning, which includes hooking me with her claws in various parts of my face, sticking her nose literally in my nose, biting my nose or fingers with her two remaining bottom fangs, and bapping me in the face and head.
I'm very concerned about her constant scratching, and took her to the vet for her first checkup. The vet says it could be one of many things, and the first thing I'm going to try is cutting out chicken in her diet in case it's an allergy, and chicken is the most common one. But this will be hard, because chicken is really the only thing she consistently likes. I've had to throw away so much food because she will happily starve if it means not eating something she doesn't like.
The worst case scenario though is that the stomatitis is still heavily present in her mouth and is causing the skin itching. I thought it was just dental disease, but it's apparently really an immune system problem, and the vet said her mouth still shows some redness, so she could be having an immune response because the two remaining teeth are still causing the stomatitis, or there's a root or something left over from the extractions she went through when she first came in to the shelter system. Poor little bug.
The terrifying thing is that taking her to an animal dentist could be "very expensive"--3 to 6k. Which is why I'm starting with food allergies first. The one thing that worries me too is that it could be an environmental allergy, and like...what would I even be able to do except rehome her? I don't think I could handle that, I already love her to pieces. So in the meantime, I just have to keep working on this and hoping she doesn't scratch herself raw--the vet did say she felt like her scratching is very low level, and what they call "barbering" (scratching away the hair or shortening it) isn't super bad.
She is extremely...I don't want to say clingy, because that sounds bad, but maybe attached or something. She wants to always be with me, which sometimes isn't super convenient. She's utterly silent, so sometimes I am totally surprised by her appearing behind me. And she's also very very talkative. I like talkative kitties.
I've had the rescue's crate since I brought her home, and had hoped to get it back to them before now but it never worked out, but I finally got my friend to agree to come with me for a day trip and we're going on Thursday and making a fun day of it. Hilariously, it's hot all week except Thursday when it's maybe going to rain.
I have so many medical appointments coming up that my head is swimming. I heard from the Swedish Cancer Center and they couldn't schedule me in August, so I am going on the 31st to meet the ARNP who works with what looks to be my new oncologist for my intake appointment. I'm supposed to have next treatment a month from my last treatment at Dr. Li's office, so I assume I'll be at least scheduled for that at their infusion center, but right now I know nothing. There's a certain...well, not merely frustration, but a kind of irritation at not knowing what's ahead, because so much of this illness is never knowing what's coming down the pipe, waiting for your lab work results and so many tests over and over. And of course it's nobody's fault except the evil fucking overlords at Optum and United Healthcare and you can't get mad at anyone except this faceless vile corporate entity.
I've been rewatching The Pitt to try to get into the headspace to be able to write my FTH stories (and also just because I do love everyone in that bar), but first I have to write the MCU story for
minim_calibre. I fear that I cannot write anymore. I'm really worried about this. It's reminding me a lot of not being able to write after my sister died, and man, that took me over a decade to be able to do more than a Yuletide story or two. 😬

Friendshipex, a new fic exchange themed on friendship
Jul. 14th, 2026 07:39 amI just saw a new gen-heavy fanfic exchange announced:
friendshipex. I see that
sholio also has an eye on it, and that no one else I know may yet have spotted it...?
I'm thinking seriously of participating. It's after
fkficfest ends (I, miraculously, fully completed my own fest story a full week early this year... hopefully my kind beta-reader doesn't discover otherwise). And I will get some summer vacation days in August that could be delightfully spent writing. But it has only 9 subscribers so far. Even with the option to request and offer 10 fandoms with 10 friendships each, it may well run up against just not having enough people for multifandom matching. And this could be exacerbated by it allowing "friends with benefits," which is another potential stumbling block to easy matching (I personally would not offer or request that in an exchange of this structure, while of course some folks might offer and request only it).
I'm thinking seriously of participating. It's after

Jul. 14th, 2026 12:09 amStill not dead.
Still watching Poirot-- it's long past when I stopped watching before -- and they've got gads of guest stars. One episode had James D'Arcy, the next had Alexander Siddig and Zoe Wanamaker, and the one I'm currently on has Michael Fassbender.
(David Suchet is my favorite Poirot, to the point that it took me several tries to get through Kenneth Branagh's version of Death on the Nile.)
I still have some throat issues leftover from being sick last month: voice still feels strained and sounds rough at least to me, and I get overnight phlegm buildup that takes a while to clear in the mornings. Not coughing much any more though. The sickness itself lasted ten days; the lingering cough went another couple weeks; but who knows how long the remaining weirdness will continue...
I've been having interesting dreams lately. ( Read more... )

The 4th and other news
Jul. 13th, 2026 06:58 pmWe had family visiting us over the 4th, which was great, but it meant I didn't get around to posting any updates. The day itself was kind of weird, in that the 250th would normally be a big deal and instead inspired a "meh" feeling, thanks to Trump ruining it for everyone (both by killing the celebration and by putting the country in the state it's in). Our daughter bought some fireworks, though, and so we had a little show at the bottom of the driveway. First time for that since my brother moved North about 4 years ago. He used to go nuts on the 4th -- it was his favorite holiday! And now he's passed on, so I have a lot of bittersweet feelings about the date.
I was shopping for something at Amazon this week, and it remembered that I've been looking at book nooks, so it suggested a Dolphin Island set to me. Is that a thing? I guess it must be. Anyway, this was a much better set than the one it suggested, though still not as good as other book nooks I've seen. AKA,
* Dinosaur Museum
* Magic Station (Harry Potter Hogwort's train)
* Voyage Memories
* Whatever This Dreamy Seafaring Thing Is
* Steampunk
* Zodiac
* Tarot
* Pirate Bay
* Dark Family (Netflix's Wednesday show)
Whoo!
In TV viewing, we watched The Vow on Netflix last weekend and enjoyed it, and I've been bingeing on Hope Street (Britbox) before it gets removed. I was unprepared for the cast shakeups that happen each season, especially since Nicole and Clint and their toxic, histrionic relationship is one of the storylines I least like, and yet they're still around and still yelling at each other. :(
We've also started S2 of The Good Girl's Guide To Murder, which we both like. The lead character is played by the actress who plays Enid in Wednesday, so that's nice. She's very likeable. But looking through my Netflix list yesterday, I can see that I really need to finish S2 of Beef (disappointing) and get to one of the other 30 or so series in my queue. Probably this week, since we're having a heatwave and I'll be biking in the garage for-e-ver. \o?

there ain't a cloud up above
Jul. 13th, 2026 07:59 pmYesterday was great! Both the cake and the brownies turned out well and everyone liked them! Baby Miss L enjoyed her new books and showed us all the pictures from her trip to Disney where she met so many princesses plus Winnie the Pooh and Tigger and Eeyore!
I also discovered that my brother's new pool has steps instead of a ladder, so I can actually use it. The last time I tried, it took me way too long to get myself out because I was so afraid my knee wouldn't hold up, since the distance between the rungs was so large. But the steps are easy to get up and down - I did not have a bathing suit yesterday but I did have bike shorts on under my dress, so I just hiked up the skirt and went down the first two steps to test it out and it was fine. So that makes me very happy! I can now spend most of my week there in the pool, weather permitting. I just have to remember my ear plugs, because last time I did that, I got a nasty ear infection. And mostly outside as well, away from all the cat dander that makes me so miserable, even with Zyrtec.
I also told my brother I was not handling anything related to the litter box and he and my niece assured me they have an automatic(?) one, and a backup one if the automatic one gets messed up, and it will be fine for a week. And apparently Brie was so anxious when Bleu had to go to the vet without her that now they might be leaving him home instead of sending him to camp for the week. Idk, but he is a very good boy! And Brie is still full of anxiety. but I figure if the weather is good, she can just stay outside until she's ready to come in, instead of me trying to coax her inside with treats and failing miserably. So we'll see how it goes!
Today, the cleaning ladies came, so my apartment is clean, and my laundry was dropped off (though they left it at the wrong apartment door - I swear, sometimes I can't even with people - so I had to go get it, but thankfully it was just one floor down), so my vacation is starting off on a very organized and tidy note. *g*
