Kuiyki is a non-playable character in Final Fantasy XIV. She appears during the Melee DPS role quests in the Dawntrail expansion.
History
Before Dawntrail
Kuiyki was a hunter, but all her life she had trouble with her eyesight, which made it difficult for her to perceive things from afar. As a result, she had difficulty catching prey even for food and ended up being forced to do chores like washing clothes, preparing meals, and tuning bows. She wanted to be recognized for once. Kuiyki then secretly took the Dreamweave Cocoon to transform herself into the village's best hunter, I'toca, and copy her skills. Kuiyki finally managed to catch prey worthy of a hunter, but as she was returning home, she found a man lying in the middle of the road. Kuiyki had never had reason to distrust anyone before, so she approached him to tend to his wounds. However, the moment she approached, the man knocked Kuiyki out and stole the Dreamweave Cocoon.[1]
When she woke up, Kuiyki confessed everything to the village elder and was forgiven. However, Kuiyki couldn't forgive herself. During the night, she secretly ran away to pursue the thief herself. Kuiyki made her way to Kugane, and after several days of fruitlessly searching the city, she met up with I'toca, who was tasked with retrieving the Cocoon. I'toca was surprised to see Kuiyki. Fearing that she would be sent back home, Kuiyki expressed her shame, and I'toca comforted her by saying that they would find the Cocoon together. However, the thief used the Cocoon's power to disguise himself as Kuiyki, and when I'toca was off guard, the thief stabbed her in the back.[1]
Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail
When the Warrior of Light arrived in Kugane to help I'toca with the search, Kuiyki had assumed her identity, claiming that she was I'toca. Kuiyki thanked them for their help and explained that, while she knew the thief was a Hyuran man, the cocoon's power of mimicry made him a difficult prey to capture. The only clue she had were recent rumors of disputes breaking out around the city that had no clear instigator.
The two witnessed an altercation between a clerk and a customer, with the latter's behavior seeming to match the thief's supposed modus operandi. Kuiyki threw the medicine at him without hesitation, but it had no effect other than further upsetting the man. After the incident, they visited Kogane Dori, where they witnessed a dispute between two samurai. After careful observation, the Warrior of Light and Kuiyki discovered that the wife instigating the fight was actually Samidare, the thief in disguise. Unfazed by his foiled plan, Samidare used the cocoon to transform into a falcon and fled. Kuiyki attempted to shoot him down with an arrow but missed. The Sekiseigumi thanked her for revealing the perpetrator, promising to spread the story of his crimes among the populace and redouble their efforts to keep them safe.[2]
With no news of further incidents in Kugane, the pair began searching the Ruby Sea. According to Ikaruga, a Confederacy ship had recently approached the Ruby Price without authorization, nearly provoking a fatal conflict. Although the ship eventually withdrew, the situation was tense, and the soldiers feared that it would worsen if a similar incident occurred again. Meanwhile, the Confederates claimed that it was actually the Bakufu soldiers who had recently overrun their borders. Upon investigation, they discovered that Captain Rasho had been acting strangely lately, expressing intentions to besiege the Ruby Price. The sudden change in his behavior led Kuiyki to believe that the thief might have taken his form. Upon meeting with Rasho in person, Kuiyki once again used his medicine to expose Samidare. After an argument, Samidare revealed his intention to use the Dreamweave Cocoon to uncover the truth of the world—that people are cruel at heart. As he fled, Kuiyki attempted to shoot him down but missed again. However, the Confederates appreciated they intervention and vowed to remain vigilant for any further unusual activity in the Ruby Sea.[3]
Eventually, the Confederacy informed Kuiyki that Samidare had infiltrated Doma and disguised himself as Lord Hien in an attempt to provoke a war between Doma and Nagxia, but Yugiri had quickly seen through the ruse, and Samidare had fled. The Warrior of Light and Kuiyki then decided to search for Samidare in Yanxia. While investigating, a farmer was surprised to see the Warrior of Light, claiming to have given them directions to the House of the Fierce moments before, making it clear that the thief had assumed the appearance of the Warrior of Light. Arriving at the House of the Fierce, Samidare had transformed into the Warrior of Light and was attempting to incite a war between Doma and the Azim Steppe. Kuiyki used the medicine to reveal Samidare's true appearance, and he transformed into a hawk to escape. Kuiyki once again shot to stop him, but missed. The Warrior of Light then asked if Kuiyki was really the huntress I'toca. The question caught Samidare's attention, and before escaping, he revealed that the real I'toca was already dead at his hands, and that she was an impostor.[1]
After explaining the situation to the Doman ninja, one of them revealed that the insidious individual had once been part of their order before being recruited by the Garlean army as a spy. After returning to Kugane, Kuiyki confessed to the Warrior her real name and admitted that it was indeed her fault that the Dreamweave Cocoon was stolen from her village. To make up for her mistake, she traveled to Kugane, where she found I'toca, and together they attempted to recover the stolen relic. However, Samidare murdered the elite hunter, leaving Kuiyki to carry out this mission alone.[1]
While Kuiyki and the Warrior of Light were talking in Kugane, a ninja from the House of the Fierce appeared and informed them that Samidare was hiding in Hells' Lid. The Warrior of Light and Kuiyki quickly headed to the area and split up to carry out the search. After the Warrior of Light was ambushed by a group of Red Kojin on the prowl, they continued the search without success. Kuiyki then arrived and distracted the Warrior of Light's attention. The moment the Warrior of Light looked away, Kuiyki prepared to stab them, but the real Kuiyki rushed in and attacked the double, revealing that it was Samidare in disguise. Fed up that his plan had been foiled yet again, Samidare vowed to prepare a more thorough method of assassination for their next encounter before flying off like a bird.[4]
Due to exposure to salt water, Kuiyki's medicine was no longer able to counteract the Dreamweave Cocoon's mimicry. Kuiyki said she wanted to visit a supplier named Shirakashi in Kogane Dori to purchase the ingredients to synthesize a new batch of the solution and invited the Warrior of Light to accompany her. Unfortunately, the materials needed for the Tural-based medicine could not be purchased in the Far East. Despite this setback, a conversation between Shirakashi and an elderly customer led Kuiyki to realize that glasses could improve her vision and thus enhance her archery skills. The customer recommended a merchant named Yamabuki, who had a repertoire of craftsmen he could call upon to craft Kuiyki a pair of glasses. Yamabuki, however, informed her that two particular materials were currently missing, and the Warrior of Light and Kuiyki had to procure them themselves. With the two necessary materials finally available, Yamabuki proceeded to craft Kuiyki's glasses. Now wearing the glasses, Kuiyki practised at Kugane docks. She fired and hit a series of shots at a few targets. Kuiyki was happy to have overcome her greatest handicap. She exuded a confidence she hadn't had before, believing that she finally had a chance to capture Samidare.[5]
After returning to Kugane, Cirina of the Mol appeared. Cirina explained that Samidare had appeared in Mol Iloh, once again assuming the appearance of the Warrior of Light in an attempt to incite war between the tribes and Doma. Although the initial plan had failed, the Warrior of Light and Kuiyki suspected that Samidare might still be in the Azim Steppe, and Cirina encouraged them to visit the Reunion to gather information. After speaking with several merchants, they learned that Magnai of the Oronir had been acting strangely and that he was recently seen entering Bardam's Mettle.[6]
The two went to the location and found Magnai and Sadu of the Dotharl in what appeared to be a meeting. Upon observing, the Warrior of Light realized that Sadu was actually Samidare in disguise. Samidare was trying to seduce Magnai and provoke him into attacking Doma. The Warrior of Light and Kuiyki interrupted the plan and the conversation, and Samidare told Magnai that they were spies for Doma. Magnai was confused because the Warrior of Light was the khagan of the Steppe. Losing patience, Samidare knocked out Magnai and assumed the form of the deceased I'toca to confront the Warrior of Light and Kuiyki. Samidare transformed into a series of fearsome fighters, even taking on the form of Tamamo Gozen herself. Realizing that victory was out of reach, Samidare transformed into a falcon and tried to escape but was shot down by Kuiyki. Samidare was then arrested by Oronir warriors, and Magnai promised to ensure that Samidare would be punished for his crimes. With the Dreamweave Cocoon finally recovered, Kuiyki knew the long journey home had to begin, though she remained uncertain of how she would be received.[6]
Since it was Shashepya who had originally requested the Warrior of Light's assistance in helping I'toca, Kuiyki asked that they return to Tuliyollal together. Shashepya was surprised when the Warrior of Light arrive with Kuiyki, who explained everything that had transpired. Shashepya was dismayed to learn of I'toca's death but was relieved that Kuiyki had returned safely with the Cocoon in hand. Despite this, Kuiyki insisted that her accomplishments could never bring I'toca back, nor could she forgive herself for her failures, and thus she vowed to exile herself. Shashepya immediately rejected this, assuring Kuiyki that the forest was her home. Kuiyki eventually agreed with Shashepya and thanked the Warrior of Light for everything they had done. With the hope that their paths might cross again someday, she set off with Shashepya to her village.[6]
After all of Apyaahi's subordinates had been apprehended and relics they stole returned, Kuiyki, along with Tepeke, Tentoawa, Loashkana and Ceetol Ja gathered at X'balyav Tye again with the intention of ending the Passage of the Unbound for good. All agreed to send Warrior of Light to Ul'dah in order to find Apyaahi and get close to her, in order to learn, what she was planning. After the Warrior returned, they informed others that Apyaahi carried a relic of her own, which allowed her to control beasts. She was also planning something, which involved Tuliyollal, and that her followers are gathering in Hhusatahwi in Shaaloani. The Warrior, Kuiyki and Ceetol Ja decided to go there to learn more, with Kuiyki having a plan, while others prepare Tuliyollal for battle.
In Hhusatahwi, Kuiyki's plan was to use Dreamweave Cocoon to disguise the Warrior as Apyaahi, in order to get her lackeys to reveal Apyaahi's plan without attracting attention. The Warrior eventually learned Apyaahi's gola was to march and take over Tuliyollal. During the infiltration, Ceetol Ja noticed the real Apyaahi was coming, and she and Kuiyki distracted her by claiming the saloon drinks are bad for drinking. Apyaahi found this weird, even though she wasn't going to buy anything. The distraction nevrtheless worked, and Apyaahi was none the wiser about the Warrior imitating her.
Kuiyki joined the Landsguard for Tuliyollal's defense against Apyaahi. When Apyaahi marched towards the bridge connecting Xak Tural and Yok Tural, she was a little surprised to see the Warrior there. However, she then revealed she had instantly recognized the Warrior as Eorzea's vaunted champion. Apyaahi then used her relic to cause a distraction, which allowed her to mount winged beast to carry her to Tuliyollal, forcing the Warrior, Kuiyki, Tepeke, Tentoawa, Loashkana and Ceetol Ja to follow her across the bridge. They had to fight through beasts Apyaahi had conjured with her relic. Others urged the Warrior to press on, while they deal with the beasts. By the time they reached the Warrior, they broke them free from chains Apyaahi had conjured, and together they brought her low. She desperately clung to her relic again, but Kuiyki shot it with her bow, destroying it. Defeated, Apyaahi then began to explain why she did what she did; she yearned to be free from all the rules and restrictions, since they took everything from her. Everyone then explained her, that that is not true freedom, since a world without such rules would quickly turn into chaos. When Apyaahi wasn't swayed by this, she and the rest of her followers were arrested by the Landsguard.
After saving Tuliyollal, everybody thanked the Warrior of Light for help. Kuiyki, Tepeke, Tentoawa, Loashkana and Ceetol Ja promised to each other to keep in touch and form stronger relations between each other's tribes, with Kuiyki inviting everyone to her village to feast on a prey she'll catch all by herself.
Characteristics
Appearance
Kuiyki is a female Shetona with grey hair.
Personality
Kuiyki has only ever desired to be like others in her village, but her weak eyesight always got in her way. Because of this, she considered herself a failure, even if other villagers genuienly cared for her and never really thought she was a failure, only that she just wasn't cut out to be a real hunter.
When the Dreamweave Cocoon is stolen from her, she feels she must redeem herself by any means necessary by getting it back. But even with this desire, she still feels uncertain of herself and tries to put on a brave face, even by pretending to be I'toca to the Warrior of Light. The Warrior eventually sees through her facade, but instead of cursing her, they help her nevertheless, not just about retreiving the Cocoon but also herself. When she discovers that a pair of glasses can fix her eyesight, Kuiyki becomes hopeful again, as she can finally be the hunter she always yearned to be. After retreiving the Cocoon, she nevertheless feels she doesn't deserve to return home, but when she is assured that everyone in the village miss her, she finds the courage to return, and yearn to become as good a hunter as I'toca was.
