Making an animation in GIMP

I am having trouble making an animated .gif. I have Gimp 2.8.

I go to file --> open as layers and open the screenshots I will be using. After I playback what the animation is going to look like, I then go to file --> save as but it will not let me save it as a gif. It tells me to go to file --> export which I do. When I go to save it as a .gif, I tick the boxes as animation and loop forever. After that it still doesn't work. Could someone explain what I'm doing wrong?

GIF Photosets

Hi,
I was wondering how I might go about recreating something like this:

My concerns lie only with the excution (i.e. making gifs, possibly from video clips, sizing of gifs and canvas so everything is equal, etc.) and not the coloring. :) As detailed as possible would be great; I'm rusty with GIMP and even worse with animations. I use Windows and GIMP 2.2.4.  Thanks!

Candle flickering

Is there a tutorial for the animation of a candle flame flickering?  I have gone through the animation posts here and didn't stumble across one.  I would like to animate the flame in this image:

I can understand if the flame won't be able to move since the background isn't one color, but is there a way to make it glow?

Something like this: http://icon-tutorial.livejournal.c… or http://icon-tutorial.livejournal.c…

Thanks for the help!

File Size, Image Quality

Hi! I'm new to the comm and to Gimp as well. I've been playing around with it and have made quite some nice icons. I'm now trying to make animated/gif icons. My only problem is the file size. As we all know, LJ only allows icons to be 40kb or smaller. Is there any way to save the file in a smaller size without compromising the frame count or image quality?

I hope someone can help me out here. Thanks!

animated fade out

I am, perhaps, very blind, but I can't find help on this anywhere.

I have this vid clip (pulled using GAP) that I want to have fade to white before restarting.  I'm sure there must be a way to take the final vid image and a full white frame and have GIMP / GAP extrapolate the fade, but I'm darned if I can figure it out.  Or, if not, then does anyone have a decent way to accomplish this effect even if it's a bit more labor intensive?

Quality and file size issues will be dealt with at a later time.  Any and all help gratefully accepted (even if it's just to point me to something I should've found on my own).
