Brushes

This is probably a bit of a stupid question, but can any one tell me how you use brushes to make images. I've downloaded some brushes in to gimp, but I don't actually know how to use them to make images like this one .

:: kicks ::

I've just downloaded a bunch of pretty brushes and went to install them like I used to on XP and... apparently doing it on Vista is NOT the same. Can anyone help me with how to install my new brushes on Vista?

Icon Help

I've just started working with Gimp and making icons but I think I've got most of the basics down. However I know I'm not using my brushes right (or I suppose I'm not using them to their full potential). So I need help with two things here.

1) I feel that when I use a icon-y brush on my image it looks... flat. Like it doesn't really fit into the image. This is if I put it directly on the original layer and I know putting it on a different layer is a better idea but it still looks silly to me. I've tried this with a couple different images and I've seen lots of icons that can end up looking good no matter what image is used. Is there anyway to make these look better? Or is there a step I'm missing, something that I'm not doing quite right?

2) I have the same problem with the font. I've not quite gotten the hang of getting into anything fancy with text (truthfully the whole thing confuses me a whole lot) but when I try to put something basic on it seems out of place. Can someone give me a some tips or tricks that'll help me end up not looking so... ameturish? Like my first problem, there might be something I'm doing wrong that makes a big difference.

tl;dr: I'm looking tips or tricks to make my text or applied brushes flourish

(This is my first time posting here so I'm very, very sorry if this is the wrong place to post this or I've done something wrong. I'll definitely deserve any trouble I get into)

Thank you to anyone who can help me out. orz

Help with Brushes...

Alrighty, I was wondering, can you use paintbrushes from photoshop in GIMP? If you can how do you do it and how does it work. Also  it's a .rar file (which i opened), and inside the actual paintbrush is a .abr file. What do I do about that? My computer won't let me see it.

Hey, new in the comm and new in the GIMP.

I downloaded a few brushes and I've been using them, but I noticed I can't color them with a gradient, like these examples:
http://fc18.deviantart.com/fs24/i/…
http://fc76.deviantart.com/fs12/i/…
http://fc29.deviantart.com/fs17/i/…

Whenever I pick a gradient to use with the brushes, it only works if I do a straight line with it, which is no the effect I want. I've tried everything and the closest I could get to it was this:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/…

(I tried to put the original image as the BG layer and then a gradient as a second and added whr brushes with a few varied modes)
I also wanted the gradient in the background disappeared.

Basically, I wanna color a brush with a gradient.

Brushesssss!

I have a question about everyone's favorite subject- brushes!

I've been using GIMP for a really long time and I know how to make custom brushes. I can't save them by saving the image as ".gbr" file. So I use the Script-Fu (Edit -> Paste as -> New Brush). My brushes appear and work perfectly.

So my question/problem is... that I want to distrubute the brushes for other people to use, but when I go to the brushes file, my custom brushes aren't there. Is there any way to acess them? I've tried restarting GIMP and re-opening the GIMP brush file. (Hope this makes sense!)

Okay, I just downloaded GIMP a few days ago and I've been fooling around with it. I'm really confused how to upload textures, fonts or brushes. I'm also confused on how to use layers and stuff. Is it kind of like photoshop with the clicking and dragging thing? My sister uses photoshop but I don't. I downloaded GIMP because I heard it was easier so I want to learn the basics and stuff. Do I need to download anything more then just GIMP itself?

Can anyone help me? It will be greatly appreciated. ;;

Question about brushes

Hello.

I've been using GIMP for a while now (since before I switched to Linux) and I really didn't use a lot of custom brushes. However, I've found out how useful they can be. However, I went overboard and added around 200-225 brushes to my list, and it caused a significant slowdown, and the CPU usage jumped up to 45%-50% constant.

For the record, I'm using a Core 2 Duo at 2.6 GHz with 1GB of DDR2 RAM, and running Kubuntu Linux 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon), though I'm going to upgrade to 8.04 soon.

My question is, what do you suggest as a limit to the number of brushes to have loaded at any one time? 75-100? Maybe less?
