Creating Gifs With Gimp - Help?

Dear comm members,
I am very new to the art side of things, I haven't even posted anything on lj yet. But I'd like to; I'm currently working on a prompt for the SPN fandom. Unfortunately, my muses ran rampant and now I'm a little stuck with gimp. So I'd love to talk to someone about their experiences with creating gifs there. Specifically, is there any way to avoid the mode switch to 'indexed' from RGB? Because that just about slaughters the whole thing (which you experienced people probably were already aware of but I wasn't). Grayscales are fine quality wise, but I'd love to keep it colored.
Also, I'm currently at 100+ layers for the background alone - the muses, I'm telling you - and that makes the .xcf file huge and veeery slow to work with. Not only do I still need to tweak the whole thing to smooth it out, but I also need to add the actual foreground sequence with the characters so now I'm thinking about doing that in a second file and merging both of them in the end, probably by creating a new layergroup for every single background layer. Has anyone done that kind of thing before or knows the problems I'm talking about? I'm sure there must be easier ways to do this, so any advice would be highly appreciated.

Dear mods, I have no idea about tagging this or if this is even the right place to ask these things so I'm sorry for all mistakes I probably made.

Help please??

hi guys. i've got a question, i'm looking for a way to create an effect such as the one on this photo:

Background Issue (Latest Version of GIMP)

I'm sure anyone who used Microsoft Paint knew that if you wanted to add a background to something, you made sure that the image's "background" was white before opening a new document and pasting your intended background in, then paste your image in on top of it, click the second little button with the shapes under the toolbox that doesn't have a name, and voila! Your image would have a crappy background.

...GIMP doesn't do that, apparently. Or maybe it does, but I just haven't noticed because I'm new to it.

I've been messing around with it for over an hour, and the closest I've gotten is meshing the two images together into a kinda 2-in-1 type thing, but sadly, that's not quite what I want.

If there's a way to make an image into an actual background for another one in GIMP, I would be so thankful to know. I'd love to be able to put backgrounds on images and have it actually look good...

Gimp 2.6

Okay, so I downloaded the newest version of GIMP 2.6 today. There's some changes that will take some getting used to but overall I think it looks great. I do have one problem and I can't figure out the solution!

When I have multiple layers and I select to erase part of the top layer I would normally see the bottom layer where I just erased, but that's not happening in the newest version of GIMP. Does anyone have any idea why this doesn't work in the 2.6 version?

Hello

Hi everyone!

I'm quite new to GIMP and image manipulation - so my questions may be rather juvenile. I have searched for beginner's tutorials, but they're either confusing, or that simple that they're useless.

Mostly, I want to learn about layers. I know that there is a layer's too, where you can see all your layers, and select which to use and there are little pictures of eyes. But I can't find it! :(

Also, how do you then blend the layers?

Anchoring layers? What? Help!

Hi there - I am new to LJ and to GIMP (just got it yesterday, in fact) and I am working my way through some LJ online tutorials. And yes, I am a bit rubbish with computers, so words of one syllable would probably be best - *grin*

So... I have made my box and had a play and brought in some shapes, but then I am supposed to be able to move/ anchor the shapes-  and it's just not happening.

Everytime I click on move, then my shape, and try to drag it, the WHOLE picture moves out of position! There isn't a little anchor sign or anything!

What am I doing wrong?

Weird problem...

Hi everyone, I'm having a strange issue with Gimp that I'm hoping someone can help me with. Okay, so I'm making icons, and you know how you're supposed to duplicate the layers and set them to screen or whatever? Well, that isn't working for me. That is, it used to, but after the program crashed on me recently, when I opened it again and tried to do my thing, nothing worked. I set the new layers but they just looked the same no matter what effect I used. This has never happened before and I'm wondering how to fix it. I hope I'm explaining this okay. Here's a screencap of the problem, as an example:

I really hope someone can help with this!
