Tutorial (Big Time Rush)

Hi everyone! moony_blues asked if I could cross-post this over here, and I was more than happy to oblige. I thought I'd share an icon I've worked on and a tutorial that goes with it. The icon:

Program: GIMP 2.6.11
Difficulty: Easy-Medium (depends on how well you know GIMP)

Collapse )

This was previously cross-posted to rfmadison (my public creative journal), icon_tutorial, and gimp_tutorial.

Question about textures and backgrounds

So I have this base:

I want to use this texture as a background:

Only if I set it to screen, then the stars end up all over both characters.  (I only want the stars as the background of my base).

I've tried using the Lasso tool to just copy and paste the two characters (minus the blue sky) into the starry texture, but the character on the left's hair and the character on the right's jacket are so dark that I'm really, really having a hard time doing it (it's hard to tell what's part of the dark blue background and what are actually the characters).  I had the same problem when I set the starry texture to Screen and just tried erasing around the characters.

Is there an easier way to do this?  Because I'm having an incredibly hard time doing this by hand.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

advice

How do you guys save textures so that when you make icons and post them to your livejournal you can credit the texture makers?

I'll be honest, I just recently started using gimp, and got so excited that I saved textures w/out noting who the creaters were.  I haven't posted the icons I've created yet b/c I dont' want to upset/disrepsect that artists that made the textures.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Textures

Sorry to be back so soon with another question. But I was wondering how to properly apply textures? I've donwloaded them and added them to my images and had some pretty neat results but, in like my other problem, I don't think I'm quite doing it right. Like, even if something turns out cool it's not the best it could be?

Thanks to whoever can give me some more advice. :P

(no subject)

Okay, I just downloaded GIMP a few days ago and I've been fooling around with it. I'm really confused how to upload textures, fonts or brushes. I'm also confused on how to use layers and stuff. Is it kind of like photoshop with the clicking and dragging thing? My sister uses photoshop but I don't. I downloaded GIMP because I heard it was easier so I want to learn the basics and stuff. Do I need to download anything more then just GIMP itself?

Can anyone help me? It will be greatly appreciated. ;;
