pauraque: Kang Kil-Young holds up her phone to her ear (the guest kang kil-young)
Oh yeah, I actually did write some fic this year! It was mostly in the first half of the year so I sort of forgot. I wrote 9 things in 9 different fandoms, for a total of 6,050 words.

and here they are )

So, I realized two things this year about where I am with writing:

1) There are times in my life when I write a lot of fic and times when I don't, and I've become okay with that. I am done with feeling like I've failed if I don't do it. I would rather write a few fics here and there when I feel moved to do so than push myself to do more out of a sense of obligation.

2) Writing reviews is writing. In 2024 I wrote a combined total of 71,000 words of book and game reviews. Writing reviews is easier for me than writing fiction, but that doesn't mean it takes no effort or time, and it doesn't mean I have to value it less or feel like I am "not writing" when many thousands of words are in fact being written, edited, and posted by me.

So there's that.
pauraque: world of warcraft character (wow)
I have played every World of Warcraft expansion, at least a little, since the game came out. I've never reviewed any of them, in part because I don't think this type of game lends itself very well to reviewing. A lot of the experience is about long-term character progression through complex interlocking systems that are constantly being revised, such that you kind of don't know if the current iteration of the game is good until you've played it long enough that it's too late to tell anyone that the third major content patch of the ninth expansion was great, actually! Because now it's over and you're not going to know if the next iteration is good until you've played it.

That's not a word, Alex

So, Dragonflight is over now, and this is not a review, it's a retrospective of my experience playing an iteration of the game that no longer exists. As such, it's mostly for me, but you can read it if you want to do that for some reason!

pauraque: Guybrush writing in his journal adrift on the sea in a bumper car (monkey island adrift)
In this extremely fast-paced minimalist action game by Irish developer Terry Cavanagh, your only goal is to guide a small triangle through a geometric maze of abstract obstacles which constantly rotate as they come at you. If the leading tip of your triangle touches a wall, you die and return to the beginning of the stage. The longer you survive, the faster everything goes.

A still screenshot really doesn't do anything to convey what the game is, so here's a video of me playing the first stage:

This is a monstrously difficult game, and at first it seems impossible. Within seconds of starting the first level, you're dead. It's so fast, it feels like there's no way you can do it. And yet, if you keep trying, you start to learn how to get through the gaps in the first few walls. You survive for five seconds, and then, thrillingly, ten. As your attempts improve, you realize the obstacles come in sets and patterns that repeat. Some of them are a little less crazy than others; once you know them, they almost feel like "downtime" in between the more frantic moments. And then, at last, you make it to the end of the stage! Sixty whole seconds, incredible! That wasn't so bad after all.

Then the next stage starts. It's faster, and the patterns are new. Within seconds, you're dead. It's so fast, it feels like there's no way you can do it... )

Super Hexagon is available on PC, Mac, Linux, and mobile devices for $2.99 USD. I would recommend it for anyone who likes a twitchy challenge. Or if you need to get yourself psyched up for just about anything, you can just listen to the soundtrack.
pauraque: ariel swims toward the light (ariel)
Over the weekend I wrote three fills (a thematically appropriate number, I suppose) for [community profile] threesentenceficathon.

Uniform (G, Star Trek: Voyager, Seven of Nine, 177 words)
After the incident of the timeship Relativity was over, Seven found that two things particularly stood out in her reintegrated memory.

Day Job (G, World of Warcraft, Sian'tsu & Sagorne, 100 words)
The shamans of Orgrimmar confront a changing economic landscape.

Uncertain Provenance (G, The Little Mermaid, Ariel & Eric, 100 words)
Ariel and Eric visit an exhibition of Atlantican artifacts, curated by self-proclaimed experts.

It's not too late to participate! The fest is open for new prompts until February 12th, and there is no deadline for fills.
pauraque: Ian looks sharp in a pink blazer (ql ian)
I did not write a lot in 2023, but I did write a few things, so this will have to be a celebration of small victories!

World of Warcraft

Sisters' Reunion (M, Alexstrasza/Ysera, 100 words)
The day Alexstrasza dreamed of has come.

Remembrance (T, Koltira/Thassarian, 100 words)
What Koltira remembers of life, and when.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

For a Thousand Summers (I Will Wait For You) (T, Guinan/Jean-Luc Picard, 283 words)
So many times, Guinan thinks she sees him.

Quantum Leap (2022)

The Mandela Effect (G, Ian/Rachel, 200 words)
Brains play tricks sometimes, but other times things really do change. Ian is acutely aware of that.

The Telling (Hainish Cycle)

Soft and Supple When Alive (M, Pao/Sutty, 1733 words)
What happened before Sutty danced in the street, and after.

Original Work

Iris (T, F/F, 200 words)
Iris means rainbow in Greek, you remind yourself.
pauraque: world of warcraft character (wow)

Some of you may have already seen [personal profile] isis's post letting us know that [personal profile] silverr passed away yesterday. I knew she was in the hospital but I didn't realize her condition was so grave.

[personal profile] silverr and I met through Warcraft fandom about ten years ago, and we used to play WoW together during the Mists of Pandaria expansion. She was a fount of knowledge about the lore of the Warcraft universe, and always had something interesting to share about the places and characters we ran into while adventuring in Azeroth together. She was a fun gaming buddy, an insightful beta reader, a talented writer, and a good friend. I'm going to miss her.
pauraque: world of warcraft character (wow)
I haven't had much time to play lately, but yesterday I fired up World of Warcraft to participate in the annual Running of the Trolls, a community-run charity event benefiting the Trevor Project, an organization which operates a crisis hotline for LGBTQ youth in the US. (The "trolls" are an in-game species, chosen here for their bright colors, not a reference to trolling!)

It works just like a real life charity walk/run. The group gathers where new troll characters are created and takes about an hour to run across the game world and through the cities, raising awareness and collecting donations for this good cause. This year we raised over $3500 USD!

hundreds of players gather on a beach

Hundreds of players turned out for the event. This was the crowd at the starting line. (Sorry for the potato-quality screenshots; I had to turn the graphics way down or else that many players in one place would have made my PC explode!)

More screenshots )

It's not too late to make a donation if you're able!

This one is Share Fannish Collections. I'm not much of a collector, but I'll give it a go.

three Venture Bros. T-shirts (Decem Guild, My Leader Went to the Calamity Conference and Only Got His Best Henchman This Lousy T-Shirt, Shallow Gravy), a World of Warcraft book, and a Star Trek book

The shirts are from the Venture Bros. Shirt Club, which is a thing that happens for those glorious few weeks every couple of years when new episodes are actually airing. All the shirts are designed by the two show creators personally, and are only available for a week after the episode they're referencing, though fans who are unable to cope with having missed out have been known to recreate unofficial versions. These ones are the real deal. It's always my hope that I'll hear a "Go Team Venture!" when I'm wearing one (or at least a "Spanakopita!") but it never happens. (Once a guy leaned out of his car window and yelled "WHAT DOES SHALLOW GRAVY MEAN??" to which I replied "IT'S A BAND" because "It's a pretend band from a TV show nobody has heard of and I sincerely hope you google it sometime when your vehicle is safely parked!!!" would have taken too long.)

The books are World of Warcraft: The Official Cookbook by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel and A Stitch in Time by Andrew J. Robinson. I have more books related to these fandoms (and others), but these are special because they were gifts from fellow fans. The cookbook was sent to us by someone we play the game with, and the DS9 book was sent to me a long time ago by [personal profile] delphi. ♥♥♥

Woo, barely getting this in before the next one starts. This one is Fanwork Recommendations. I'm just going to do a few recent, short ones here, all under 1000 words.

Harry Potter

we two boys together clinging (PG-13, Harry/Draco) by [personal profile] writcraft
Excerpt: Secrets. Quiet, like two boys kissing against dusty bookshelves. Hidden, like queerly beating hearts.

Themes of books, storytelling, love, and queerness spiral round each other in this exquisitely written ficlet. Books, secrets in books, secrets of the heart. Literature, stories, love stories. They intertwine like a braid, tight and strong.

Refuge (G, Percy & Snape gen) by [personal profile] torino10154
Excerpt: "I find myself unwelcome within the castle walls." Snape studies him for a moment though Percy feels no brush of Legilimency. "I thought you might understand."

This tense post-HBP moment gets Percy's character down cold and suggests an intriguing catalyst for his journey back to his family. Feels like you could slip this right into canon.

Warcraft

The Quel'dorei Loaf (Mature, Sylvanas Windrunner/bread) by [archiveofourown.org profile] mcaulfield
Excerpt: Life was simple then, even with her duties as Ranger-General, for she and her Rangers, no matter how coolly she referred to them in the company of authority, enjoyed the simple company of one another around a fire with good drink and good bread.

I have a thing for cracky prompts taken seriously, so this ficlet was a delight for me. You might not need to know canon for this? Sylvanas is... well, she's dead. Queen of the undead, in fact, at least those who have free will. She no longer needs to eat, but through the sensuality of food, she holds onto the thread of a connection to her former life.

pauraque: patterned brown and white bird flying on a pale blue background (Default)
It's 15 days too late for this, which is just about how behind I am on everything else at this point, so at least I'm consistent? /o\

I wrote a lot of fic this past year, mostly for fests. Well... all for fests, actually, or at least for things with deadlines. Not coincidental, that. Towards the end of the year I bit off more than I could chew and did have to drop out of one fest, which was a first for me, and a bummer. Next year, more realistic scheduling! But according to AO3, I wrote about 30,000 words in 2013, which is a bit more than in any past year, including years in which my fandoms were much more active.

Harry Potter )

Star Trek )

Warcraft )

I'm going to be bold and say that most of these were solid stories that I'm proud of. It was flattering and encouraging this year to be invited to write at [insanejournal.com profile] daily_deviant and to win/place in a couple of categories at [livejournal.com profile] hpfanficfanpoll. I hope this doesn't sound stupid or vain, but what I really want out of writing is to give other people enjoyment, and when I meet that goal it makes me happy.

Onward!
pauraque: patterned brown and white bird flying on a pale blue background (Default)
Oh man, I haven't posted in a while, have I? Real life was doing a number on me, not in a bad way, just in a busy way. I am going to get to all those December meme prompts, too, but first... the Kinky Kristmas reveals post is up at [insanejournal.com profile] daily_deviant, so I can say that I wrote this, to [personal profile] songquake's delicious prompts:

Pomona Sprout and the Five Points from Hufflepuff [AO3]
(NC-17, school-age-but-probably-legal Pomona/Minerva, kinks including tickling, teasing, and embarrassment)

Speaking of which, I found an embarrassment of riches in my [community profile] fandom_stocking! There seems to be a glitch right now where I can't comment there without it being screened, but rest assured I love my gifts and deeply appreciate everyone who took the time to make something for me, including but not limited to:

- State-Transition Function by [personal profile] sineala (ST:TOS, Uhura gen with linguistics!)
- Your Move by [personal profile] moontyger (WoW, Anduin/Wrathion with UST!)
- For the Horde by [personal profile] walgesang (WoW, Thrall & Vol'jin gen with barely-subtextual D/s!)
- An Introduction by [personal profile] smallbrownfrog (HP, Luna/Minerva pre-femslash with Gilbert & Sullivan references!)
- Outstanding by [personal profile] chokolattejedi (HP, Hermione/Septima with power play!)
- Krycek and Scully art from [personal profile] ani_bester and another Krycek art from [personal profile] tarlanx! *rolls around in XF nostalgia*
- Uhura art from [personal profile] trobadora! Uhura! ♥♥♥

I really meant to do all kinds of things for this fest, but what actually happened was I signed up for it and then promptly forgot about it until the deadline had, in fact, passed. I suck, I know. Next year I'll do better. But due to the technical problems that delayed the fest going live, I managed a few icons for people, at least, and one ficlet, which is so tailored to [personal profile] walgesang's interests that it might be incomprehensible to anyone else, but here it is anyway:

The Terrible Secret of Warsong Gulch
(G, Venture Bros., 21 & 24 friendship)
pauraque: patterned brown and white bird flying on a pale blue background (Default)
Since it's the last day of [community profile] kink_bingo and the last day of Rectober (whoever decided that was a thing... I never quite figured that out), here, have some KB recs.

Harry Potter
Schoolboy Blues by [personal profile] delphi (Explicit, Snape/Filch, kink: class fantasies)
author's summary: Severus Snape knows every shortcut at St. Brutus's Secure Centre for Incurably Criminal Boys, including a few of his own devising.
If that summary hasn't already convinced you to read this fic... well, then you're clearly not me! This is the best kind of AU, where this new way of seeing the characters lets us look into them more deeply.

Star Trek: The Original Series
Feel Fine by [personal profile] sineala (G, Spock & Kirk & McCoy, kink: emotion play)
author's summary: Spock finds that he wants to be happy.
A wonderfully thoughtful and astute portrait of Spock after the events of STIV, learning and re-learning how to navigate the space he inhabits between Vulcan and human. Just lovely.

Warcraft
Scarlet and Ivory by [personal profile] usefulobject (Mature, Interrogator Vishas, kink: torture/interrogation)
author's summary: Vishas fantasizes that deep down, those damned Forsaken really like what he does. You don't get to be Scarlet Interrogator by not being creepy.
I love how Vishas projects his own twisted thoughts onto his victims — because, of course, they're the perverted ones! This fic nails the tone of how scary things are presented in WoW, with a hint of macabre humor that lightens the grotesqueness just enough.

X-Files
Palliative by [personal profile] sineala (Mature, Krycek, kink: enemas)
author's summary: Alex Krycek deals with his oilien experiences in a unique way.
Longtime friends know that the oilien episodes hold a special fascination for me, so it was a real treat to find this post-Apocrypha fic from KB 2010. The way Krycek experiences the trauma of the possession and the way he regains his sense of control are so perfectly him.
pauraque: patterned brown and white bird flying on a pale blue background (Default)
Still working on that double line, as we hurtle alarmingly toward the end of the round. This one is for the exposure/exhibitionism and plushie/furry squares.

Gear is a Crutch
World of Warcraft, female pandaren, watercolors

Nudity, though you can't really see anything but fur )
pauraque: patterned brown and white bird flying on a pale blue background (Default)
Wow, a new Harry Potter movie. I did not see that coming! I would say I'm cautiously optimistic. It might be good, and if it is (or even if it's not), I could see it breathing some new life into the fandom, which is not dead by any means, but is certainly much quieter than it once was. (This is my usual way of thinking: I don't care as much about whether some things are good as I do about whether they would be good for fandom. And sometimes the best fandoms come out of flawed source materials.)

And of course, we've got our new warchief at last. Anyone who knows or cares what that means probably knows who it is already, but cut for spoilers just in case. )
pauraque: patterned brown and white bird flying on a pale blue background (Default)
I settled on attempting a simultaneous double line with rows three and four of my card. (What can I say — piercings and blood were right next to each other!)

This one is for pain and emotion play.

The Warlock
G-rated & worksafe, World of Warcraft, original character
colored pencil on paper

The Warlock )

For those who are wondering how this fits the prompts, the spells she's holding are Searing Pain and Fear. What she plans to do with them is left to your imagination. >:)

And now I get to go to the dentist to have a crown put on. Hopefully this will not be a work of performance art on the same themes. >_<
pauraque: patterned brown and white bird flying on a pale blue background (Default)
I received an excellent gift:
Pictures in the Pavement and Magic in the Rain by [personal profile] shewhostaples (G, Mary Poppins, ft. Mary, Jane, Winifred, & the Bird Woman)
It shows us more of the lives and relationships of the women in this movie in a wonderfully believable and satisfying way. It's everything I was hoping for when I asked for this fandom. You should read it!

I got matched with [personal profile] walgesang, which I knew was a possibility (it's not my fault we have similar tastes) but this year I just figured if it happens, let it happen. For her I wrote:
Deep Breath (Teen, World of Warcraft, ft. Onyxia & Lilian Voss)

Such enormity moving with such grace (G, ST:TOS, ft. Gillian Taylor)
And I wrote a treat for [livejournal.com profile] dropsofviolet:
The Thrill of the Hunt (G, ST:TNG, ft. Tasha Yar)
I'm looking forward to combing through the rest. There are some stories that look amazing from the summaries, it's just a matter of finding time to sit down and read. D:
pauraque: patterned brown and white bird flying on a pale blue background (Default)
I've updated my first round of recs with author names. If you're here because I friended you and you're wondering who I am, it's probably because you're on that list!

I wrote three treats, which are so wildly different in style and subject matter that you'd almost think I was doing it on purpose just to see if I could.

August and Everything After (Teen, Quantum Leap, original characters) for [personal profile] bcgphoenix
Three people wrote for this prompt, which is unsurprising because it was a good one: What happens to the people Sam leaps into after he's gone? I really enjoyed reading the other fics, which each approached the question from a different angle.

The Good Old Days (Teen, World of Warcraft, original characters) for [personal profile] voleuse
Three people wrote for this prompt too! The recipient asked for fic about different factions reacting to the pandaren, and she got stories about a Stormwind human, a Bilgewater goblin, and a Forsaken, which was mine. Good times.

Acted Over (Mature, Julius Caesar, Brutus/Cassius) for [livejournal.com profile] bettef
The request here was for kinky Brutus/Cassius, which had me falling all over myself to write it even though it was somewhat last-minute. So, it's about that, and it's also about my sort of intense feelings about this play and its eerie, self-conscious obsession with time and performance. What can I say — when I get weird, I get really weird. I wish I'd seen the prompt earlier because I didn't feel like I had time to make the story as good as it was in my head, but [livejournal.com profile] bettef seemed to like it, and that's what matters most!
pauraque: patterned brown and white bird flying on a pale blue background (Default)
I don't think I'm going to get through everything I want to read before reveals this year, but here, have the first half of my recs list (which is the last half of the alphabet, because I read starting from Z).

World of Warcraft, Snow White + Red Riding Hood, The Shawshank Redemption, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Space: Above and Beyond, Romeo & Juliet, Robin Hood, My So-Called Life )

I wasn't signed up this year because I didn't think I would have time, but I did write some last-minute treats. I wouldn't expect anyone to be able to pick them out, but two of them are for fandoms I've written in before.
