This sci-fi scrolling shooter was a beloved staple of my teen years; I would play it until I saw planetary surfaces and enemy spaceships scrolling by when I closed my eyes. The first version, just plain Tyrian, came out as a shareware title in 1995. The 1999 re-release didn't change much, but it fixed a lot of bugs and added a fifth chapter. It was called Tyrian 2000, because in the '90s there was nothing cooler than the number 2000. (Except maybe the number 3000.)

Tyrian 2000 is free to download on GOG. That release comes with an emulator so you don't have to set anything up yourself, so if you like retro shooters or want to try one for the first time, you can't go wrong with this one!
