pauraque: Guybrush writing in his journal adrift on the sea in a bumper car (monkey island adrift)
Today is my birthday! Already, somehow!

On my last birthday I treated myself to talking about The Secret of Monkey Island, which is my favorite game of all time. It wasn't my intention to wait an entire year to talk about the sequel, which is also a game I have been passionate about since childhood, but here we are.

stopped by a tough guy at a bridge, the player highlights guybrush's dialogue option: I don't pay for nothin'. I'm a pirate

Guybrush's epic defeat of the Ghost Pirate LeChuck in the first game brought him fame and fortune, but what daring feats of swashbuckling has he done lately? To prove that he's not a one-hit wonder, he sets out to find the legendary lost treasure of Big Whoop, which surely must be impressive even though nobody quite knows what it is. But his quest gets more complicated when he realizes that while he may have defeated the ghost of LeChuck, the villain's body is still somewhere out there...

Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge (Special Edition) is on Steam and GOG for $9.99 USD.

Will it take me another year to review the third game? Do I even realize that at this rate I won't be replaying Return to Monkey Island until 2029? Will there be yet another surprise new entry in the series by then? Stay tuned to find out!

Today is my birthday. My gift to myself is to allow myself to gush unreservedly about my favorite video game.

In this Age of Sail comedy adventure, you play as Guybrush Threepwood, a naive young man whose dream is to become a pirate. In the course of honing his skills in swordfighting, burglary, and treasure-hunting, he meets and falls for the beautiful governor of Melee Island, Elaine Marley. But the governor has another suitor, namely the dreaded ghost pirate LeChuck, who is not happy to learn he has competition for Marley's affections.

I am not able to be objective about this game. I'm pretty sure it is actually good—at least, the consensus among adventure game fans is that it's good, if perhaps not as great as some of its sequels. But it was the first game I fell in love with, and love isn't rational.

*surfs in on a giant wave of drabbles*

Hello everyone! I've had a pretty rough week of vaccine side-effects, but I'm finally doing better now, and just in time for [community profile] multifandomdrabble reveals. This round totaled 752 entries in 327 fandoms. :o I didn't get to write as many drabbles as I'd hoped, but I was very generously gifted with several delightful ones. There's supposed to be another round later this summer, so I hope to put the scales back in balance then. :)

(And I'm obviously incredibly behind on everything else, but I promise to catch up eventually!)

pauraque: bird on the ground with a santa hat (xmas pauraque)
This year I posted 33 fics in 12 fandoms, for a total of 56,049 words. That's by far the most fic I've ever written in a year. (According to AO3, second place was 39k in 2003, the first year I got into HP fandom, but even that's an overestimate since my longest fic that year was a collab.)

Writing that much fic was a lot of work, but a lot of fun too. I enjoyed getting more involved in the AO3 exchange scene and branching out into new fandoms and characters, as well as revisiting some old favorites. I probably pushed the limit of how many fests I can do in a year, but the overlapping deadlines did help me break the bad habit of leaving things until the last minute.

I think the sheer number of things I worked on also helped me feel less anxious about each one, and more able to let it go when a story didn't quite turn out as I'd hoped. I was happy with most of what I wrote, and I'd even say that a few of this year's fics are among my all-time favorites, which to me suggests that agonizing so much over the writing process probably wasn't accomplishing much to start with.

Anyway, here's the whole bunch:

Star Trek (TNG, VOY, DIS, PIC) [15 fics] )

Harry Potter [11 fics] )

Disney (Aladdin, DuckTales, The Little Mermaid) [3 fics] )

one-offs (Dogsbody, A Little Princess, Monkey Island, The Venture Bros.) [4 fics] )

pauraque: ariel swims toward the light (ariel)
The [community profile] multifandomdrabble collection opened this week with a staggering 772 entries in 313 fandoms. :O There truly must be something for everyone, so check it out!

Here's the stuff by and for me, all either 100 or 200 or 300 words. I was surprised and delighted to get multiple gifts! They were all great. ♥

And for my last trick, I will fill the 'rough body play' and 'immobilization/mummification' squares on my card with some words and moving pictures about those two things in The Curse of Monkey Island.

Though I hit several of the major plot points, there are no actual gameplay spoilers that tell you how to solve the puzzles (I mean, the game's 16 years old, but you never know), and all is G-rated and worksafe.
