Beast (1984)

But then I thought, wait. This is a game where you, a poor defenseless cyan diamond, are dropped into the middle of a dangerous setting with monsters that are closing in on you from all sides and kill you instantly if you're caught. You have no weapons and you can't fight, but instead you have to cleverly use the environment to trap the beasts and crush them between the walls. Maybe this is survival horror!

I did play this game as a kid, but my strongest memory is of watching my mom play it because I would get too stressed out when the beasts (represented, for no obvious reason, by the letter H) surrounded me. Forget all those pseudo-PS1 indie horror games; ASCII characters are the true essence of terror.
