Atari SA

From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

In late 2000, French software company Infogrames Entertainment SA bought struggling publisher Hasbro Interactive from Hasbro, and with it the Atari brand name. After beginning to use the brand on certain games in 2001, Infogrames rebranded most of its subsidiaries as Atari in May 2003, while reducing its own presence solely as a holding company that licensed out the Atari brand name from Atari Interactive. In October 2008, the company fully purchased Atari, Inc. and, in May 2009, was rebranded as Atari SA, after many financial struggles.

1st Logo (October 26, 2001-December 9, 2003)

Visuals: On a blue, red, or black background, a large, metallic, cropped version of the Atari symbol (known as the Fuji) is shown rotating on the right side of the screen. Next to it, the words "ATTACK", "REAL", "BLAST", "PLAY", "ESCAPE", "ADDICT", "GAME" and "A@#%!" (with the "A"s in each word being replaced with the Fuji, except for the first, which only replaces the second "A"), each in the same font as the Atari logo, all wipe in and out, in sync with the music. After this, the Fuji zooms out to the center of the screen, with the Atari wordmark below it, and gains a white color (or a more visible metallic sheen, in the case of the black background version).

Variants:

  • On the PlayStation 2 versions of Splashdown and Stuntman and the PC version of Le Mans 24 Hours, the Infogrames logo appears at the beginning (albeit without the armadillo), with "PRESENTS" below it. The logo then plays as normal.
  • The PAL PlayStation 2 versions of Splashdown and MX Rider have an early version of this logo that doesn't feature the "A@#%!", and more narrower text.
  • On TransWorld Surf, the blue background is lighter.
  • On Neverwinter Nights and the GBA version of Mission: Impossible - Operation Surma, the logo is still, the background is white and the Atari logo itself is black.
  • On Superman: The Man of Steel for XBOX, a still version with a red background and copyright information appears below the logo. It follows after the third logo plays.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A short trip-hop theme, followed by a synthesized whoosh when the logo zooms out.

Audio Variants:

  • On Neverwinter Nights, an orchestrated tune is heard.
  • On the GBA version of Mission: Impossible - Operation Surma, the opening theme of the game is heard.

Final Appearance

2nd Logo (September 17, 2002-November 7, 2005)

Visuals: There is a big red ball with a reflection of the tripod over it. The picture zooms out, while concentric circles of glass swirl around the sphere. The red ball appears to be inside of another white ball, with the remaining background red or white. Some letters quickly flip and change on the sides of the tripod, which make words (in order: "EAT", "INSANE", "HABIT", "HEAVY", "CHAOS", "REACT", "FEAR", "ESCAPE", "RACE", "REAL", "FAST", "GAME" and "PLAY") and later the word "ATARI" comes in below the tripod. The circles slow down before the logo fades.

Variants:

  • On Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide for PC, the logo is slightly altered: the tripod and the Atari text are replaced with the 2003 versions of each, meaning the tripod featured is the version that is shaped like an "A".
  • On the GBA version of Stuntman, the logo is still.
  • On Beyblade V-Force: Super Tournament Battle, the logo is shorter.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Several noises followed with a computerized voice saying "ATARI". On the GBA version of Stuntman, a tune from the game plays.

  • On Driver 2 for GBA, the "R" is noticeably more jagged.
  • On Driver 3 for GBA, the logo is seen on a gold background, with a darker, tilted Fuji symbol behind it, and a scanline effect. The copyright year appears below, with the text "LICENSED BY NINTENDO".
    • A similar variant appears on Micro Machines for GBA, albeit with a red background and the tilted Fuji symbol flipped. Also, the copyright year and scanline effect are both absent.
  • On Battle Engine Aquila, the logo appears sideways in the corner of the screen alongside the Lost Toys logo; this is followed by the 1st logo.

Technique: A still, sprite-based graphic.

Audio: None or the game's opening theme.

4th Logo (August 11, 2003-May 7, 2010)

Visuals: On a white background, A redesigned version of the Atari Fuji logo is shown. It is transparent white at first, and then fills up with a red color. It zooms out, and "ATARI" is drawn around it. The Fuji serves as the second "A", hence its redesign. Then, the letters slide behind the Fuji.

Variants:

  • Like the last logo on game covers, the logo is sideways, where the text is facing the right.
  • The colors may be opposite (red background, white name), without any box around the text. This is mostly used on GBA and DS titles.
  • On the GBA version of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, the full logo appears, with the Fuji on top (still having the longer middle section) and the Atari text (without the Fuji as the second "A") below.
    • The same variant is used on The Chase: Felix Meets Felicity for the Nintendo DS, but is reflected on the bottom screen as with the other logos and copyright text.
  • On Nintendo DS games licensed from Anuman Interactive, the standard red background still variant appears on the top screen of the system, while the bottom screen has just the red Fuji on a white background.
  • On the PAL version of Trivial Persuit: Unhinged and Titeuf: Mega Compet (PlayStation 2 versions), the logo is sped up and is higher-pitched as a result. This is likely due to poor NTSC to PAL video conversion
  • On the PAL versions of Risk: Global Domination for the PlayStation 2 and Jenga World Tour for the Wii, a slower, lower-pitched version of the logo plays. As above, this likely stems from a poor NTSC to PAL video conversion.
  • On PlayStation 3, some XBOX 360, and some later PC titles, an HD variant is used. This version misses the filling of the tripod - instead, it just appears and zooms out. Then, the logo folds into the HD "High Definition Gaming" marker after completion.
    • On My Horse and Me, this variant is used, but without the HD part. This was also used in many trailers for Atari games at the time.
    • On the trailer for My Horse and Me 2, the logo folds into the International Federation for Equestrian Sports logo before fading into the trailer.

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: A loud synth descending sound, then a whoosh and a beep at the very end.

Audio Variants:

  • The still version is silent.
  • The HD version has some techno glitching sounds and a whoosh when the HD part is shown.
  • On the original version of Sid Mayer's Civilization III: Conquests, the intro music plays over the existing sounds.

Availability Notes

  • The animated variant debuted on the E3 trailer for Test Drive Unlimited 2.

6th Logo (March 22, 2016-November 3, 2023)

Visuals: On a white background, red squares form the Atari tripod logo. After the tripod is completed, it slams down, sending many little red squares everywhere. "ATARI" is on the bottom of the tripod, but unlike the last logo, the text is longer and there is no URL.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: Sounds of electricity charging, then a bass drop.

Availability: It first appeared on the trailer for Atari Vault and later appeared on said game. It also appears on Roller Coaster Tycoon World, RollerCoaster Tycoon Adventures and its expanded version RollerCoaster Tycoon Adventures Deluxe, and Tempest 4000.

7th Logo (April 21, 2020-)

Visuals: Just the Atari logo on a background, depending on the game.

Variants:

  • On Pong Quest, the red logo zooms out onto a white background.
  • On Tempest 4000, the logo appears in white on a black background, and then flashes out.
  • On Kombinera, the logo is on a red background, similar to the 2010 logo. A copyright notice appears below.
  • On the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 ports of The Disney Afternoon Collection, only the "ATARI" wordmark appears.

Technique: A still, digital graphic.

Audio: None or the title theme of the game.

Availability: Appears on Pong World and the Nintendo Switch and Atari VCS ports of Tempest 4000, as well as Kombinera.

8th Logo (50th anniversary variant) (February 23, 2022-2023)

Visuals: On a gray background, the Atari logo zooms out, with the tripod showcasing various stripes of colors (like on Atari 2600 games and on commercials). The logo has a VHS effect applied to it. Afterwards, they fade out to make way for the brand's 50th Anniversary logo, which consists of various striped shapes of many colors forming the golden "50".

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: A retro-themed sounder, with a whoosh for the "50" portion.

Availability: This was used as a celebratory logo for Atari's 50th anniversary.

  • First appeared on the trailer for the Nintendo Switch/Atari VCS port of Tempest 4000. Also appeared on trailers for Kombinera and Gravitar: Recharged and for a series of collectable Atari 2600 cartridges.
  • Appears on Atari Mania for PC and Nintendo Switch and on Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration.
  • Also shows up at the end of the interview between the company's current CEO, Wade Rosen, and Atari, Inc. founder Nolan Bushnell, and at the beginning of an interview with Warren Robinett, the creator of Atari's Adventure.

9th Logo (September 9, 2025-)

Visuals: A white dot flashes onto the screen, and two paddles appear and form up a game of Pong. The dot increases in size, and the paddles appear inside to form a large rectangle. Two more dots form two curly lines that create the red tripod symbol. The Atari wordmark writes itself in, and a TV turn-on flash turns the background red and the logo white as it zooms out slightly.

Variant: A shorter variant also exists, which starts at the end of the logo.

Technique: 2D animation by Mediajuice Studios.

Audio: A chiptune track. The shorter variant uses either a shortened version of the aforementioned chiptune track or electricity charging sounds.

Audio Variant: On Bubsy 4D, after the logo finishes animating, Bubsy (voiced by Sean Chiplock) says "Atari!"
