Nintendo DS

The Nintendo DS is a handheld game system from Nintendo, released in 2004. The successor to the Game Boy Advance, the console had many innovative features, most notably two screens, one being touch-sensitive allowing for new ways to play games. The console became a huge success, being known as one of the highest-selling platforms of all time and winning over Sony's PlayStation Portable console released the following year. An upgraded version known as the Nintendo DSi was released in 2008, adding internet support and a camera. Nintendo followed the DS up with the Nintendo 3DS in 2011, adding higher-quality graphics, more advanced control and a glasses-free 3D display. In turn, Nintendo also released the New Nintendo 3DS in 2014, an upgraded version of the 3DS with better processing power and built-in NFC support.

Nintendo DS

Screen (November 21, 2004-2013)

Visuals: Over a white background, the Nintendo DS logo (which is "Nintendo" in the Bank Gothic MD BT font with a gray "O" below the black "O", next to a large "DS" with what looks like a little window in "DS") fades in. The Os in the logo slide in, and as soon as they touch, some "O"s shoot out all over, and the screen fades out.

Variant: When a cartridge is inserted, there is a gray Nintendo logo on the bottom.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: Two echoing synth-piano notes whose echo seems to become a synth string note at the end.

Audio Variant: If the console is turned on when the date is set to the user's birthday, the synth piano notes are replaced by a glockenspiel which echoes in the same fashion.

1st Tag (Late 2004)

Visuals: There are two "rectangles" (representing the two screens of the DS). They rotate in the Y-axis to reveal a Nintendo DS, which zooms out after. Then the Nintendo DS logo (albeit with a slightly larger space between the two letters of "DS") is shown. "coming november 21" fades in under the logo, while "www.nintendods.com" fades in at the bottom of the screen. The entire thing glitches afterwards.

Variant: On the 15-second commercial, it is sped up until the Nintendo DS logo is shown.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: The ending of the commercial.

Availability: Seen on three North American commercials before the console's launch.

2nd Tag (November 2004-2013)

Visuals: Over a white background is the Nintendo DS logo (which is "Nintendo" in the Bank Gothic MD BT font next to a large "DS" with what looks like a little window in "DS"). Some "O"s shoot out all over, in gray, black and red.

Variant: On commercials aired on Japanese TV in December 2004 is Hikaru Utada drawing a circle on the DS part of the logo and the DS symbol shoots out all over in pink.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: A piano note that sounds very similar to the first note of the Intel jingle.

Availability: Seen on Japanese and Korean commercials for games for the console.

3rd Tag (2000s-2010s)

Visuals: There are two "O"s stacked on top of each other. They quickly zoom in and out twice. Then "O"s fly out of the screen. The logo zooms in to start the commercial.

Technique: Digital traditional 2D animation.

Audio: Same as the Nintendo DS startup, but echoed, and without the synth string note.

Availability: Seen on Nintendo DS commercials from the UK.
