KiSCon 2015 mini-report
Nov. 2nd, 2015 10:51 amWell, that was a pretty intense and amazing weekend. I've never been to a convention focused around a single pairing before, and it's a unique experience. Feels a bit like the very first VividCon, where were were all aglow with the novelty of taking about vids and nothing but vids for three whole days.
For me, there was also a lot of nostalgia, and mixed feelings, and missing of old friends. I've never revisited K/S fandom since my last Shore Leave, which I believe was in 2006. Even though I've been consciously nurturing a revived interest in Kirk and Spock, it was strange to suddenly be immersed in it, and I felt self-conscious and out of touch at times, though still glad to be there. It was wonderful to see people I haven't kept in touch with, but also rather sad, as I haven't made any effort at maintaining those friendships. It was also very special to get to meet new fans, some of whom I've stalked and fangirled on Tumblr in the last eight months or so.
It was the first time I'd ever been to a Star Trek convention without T. Jonesy, and that made me really sad, too. But I also got to meet Greywolf in person for the first time—probably the best thing about the entire weekend, for me. He was exactly as I always imagined him, only better. I cried when we met. Twenty years ago, almost to the month, is when we met online, and we've never met in person. Hard to believe. Then there was seeing Carolyn and Lyra and Caren again, plus more Shore Leave pals, getting to spend more time with Amanda, meeting Rhaegal and getting to hear her talk astrophysics (twice!)—the weekend was an embarrassment of riches. And then there was meeting Syn Ferguson. I never thought I would have the chance, and she is even more fascinating, brilliant, talented, and funny than I could have imagined.
The vids were incredible. Absolutely awesome—Larissa put together one of the most impressive vid programs I've ever seen at a convention. Her knowledge of classic and current vids and her dogged determination to collect and share them at their best pretty much blew me away.
The Catspaw cosplay contest was super fun. I dressed as Samifer, not expecting anyone to recognize me, but I had a blast anyway. (Note to self: Next time, use less spirit gum on your fake Jared sideburns!)
May be processing this one for a while. I'm grateful that I was able to go, and for all the love and support the attendees have shown to the K/S Archive over the years.
