Activism seems to be my primary fandom these days, but I felt a little of my old fannish self stir to life when I realized that The Magicians returns on Syfy tonight. I confess, I'm nervous about where season 2 will go, and whether I'll come to regret my attachment to this show, but as I was reading the aforelinked article, I came across this:

Talking sloth! :D :D :D Recurring cast!

So, there's that. And, yeah, I am looking forward to seeing my Brakebills peeps again.

In other news, I don't think it's been posted officially yet, but I believe the vid show submission deadline for Escapade is going to be midnight PST, on February 5th. Please consider making a vid for (or submitting a recent one to) the show! And pass it on, especially on Twitter, since...yeah.

The talking sloth is indeed a strong selling point! :-)

Please let us know what you think when you do have a look at S2... I am still waffling, since I did love a great many of the characters, but very much did not love the end of S1. It's really hard for me to tell where the series will go from here - it might recover its S1 strengths, or go completely off the rails, and I am unsure whether I have the fortitude to find out just now.

I liked the first episode okay, but the teaser for the rest of the season had some very much DNW in it. :( Le sigh. I'll probably keep watching, but we'll see.

Ack, I was afraid of that. :-( Would you mind telling me what kind of DNW the DNW in question is...? I don't mind spoilers in this case, I just feel the need to avoid some of my DNW buttons...

Well, even Julia's story in the first episode made me uncomfortable—the dynamic between her and Martin was predictably icky. Then she had a nightmare reliving the rape. And then in the teaser, there's a scene of Reynard terrorizing her again.

:P :P :P Basically, not surprising but disappointing.

Ack two. Thank you for telling me! This sounds like pretty much exactly what I was afraid of. I have no words to express how much I hate that development in the Julia plot. It's not even just what it does to her character, which is awful enough. It's also how it destroys the counterbalance and alternate view to Brakebills, and the extremely cheap, cliched and utterly, unreflectedly voyeuristic and sexist way in which it does it.

Given the state of the world right now, I really don't need this crap, you know? The more I think about it, the more I think I'll probably have to take a pass on this show. Bummed, but it is what it is. I love the characters (especially Julia!) and...DNW.

I know exactly what you mean - it's the same for me. :-/ I do still hold out some hope that S2 will be better than we fear, but at the moment, I think I'm going to wait to watch it (probably until the entire season has aired). I prefer to be spoiled rather than stressed and enraged.
