This is me working on re-posting my old fic. Delving into my American Idol phase. ^_^

Also, today would have been the author reveals for [personal profile] fairytaleinspired, but the date has gotten pushed back. I wanted to post fic today, so we'll settle for this.

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, wild times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

One of my favorite fandom experiences is live commenting on American Idol. I first discovered [livejournal.com profile] ontd_ai (which is still in existence) during the Kris and Adam season. Live commenting during the show was my first experience with taking a fan experience and making it interactive at the same time I was experiencing it for the first time.

Now we live-Tweet the Academy Awards or have game threads for sports events. But back in 2009, I had just gotten my first iPhone and Twitter was barely used by anyone.

Live commenting on Livejournal - having different threads for people in different time zones, frantically refreshing the page to see what everyone thought about the Gokey-screech, railing about Simon's *unfair* critique of our favs. Experiencing the whole thing with a bunch of like-minded fans. Doing re-watches of earlier seasons.

I just realized that while tooling around on YouTube, and stumbled across Kris Allen and Adam Lambert duet-ting with Queen. Also, Brian May has aged quite a bit in 10 years.

We Are The Champions )

I'm not saying that was the best Season (8) of American Idol, but it was certainly the high point. Not just because of the slash fandom it spawned, but because of all the extras that surrounded it. That was the first time I got interested and involved enough to actually vote.

The watch parties and threads on [livejournal.com profile] ontd_ai, Michael Slezak's Idolatry videos with Kristin Baldwin (although I also love his later ones with Melinda Doolittle), interspersed with references to LOTR and BtVS.

Scream On )

I honestly don't remember any two finalists with as much talent and charisma in the seasons after that. Of course, Paula Abdul leaving didn't help anything. There was just so much buzz and fandom conversations surrounding that season. And also, Glee premiered right after AI aired, so there was a lot of buzz in general that spring.

I haven't watched the new version. Anyone?

ETA: I had no idea Adam and Queen were opening the Oscars. But he sounded fabulous and Brian May seemed to be having the time of his life.
