seleneheart: (Lost not going to guam)
This has been a week.

Both personally and professionally. Let's hope next week has significantly less BS.

Here's what I've been up to:

Fanworks
One of my stories wast translated into Russian! The Power of Stories (Black Sails)

I took part in this month's [community profile] drawesome challenge, Finish a Wip (click for post)
Finished artwork

I also posted a very long discussion in [community profile] drawesome that I've been working on for weeks, about finding your own art style:

TV Shows
My daughter and I are watching House of the Dragon as each episode drops. We try to watch together, but both of us have full schedules, and she's just started clinicals for nursing school. I have to say, when I saw the opening shot of the first episode, I realized how much I missed Westeros. I was extremely skeptical of Matt Smith as a Targaryen or anyone, really, from Westeros, but I have to say, he's killing it (in a good way). The rest of the cast is pretty much unknown to me, which is an interesting change from Game of Thrones with the likes of Sean Bean, Mark Addy, and Jason Momoa in the first season, and a continuing parade of fairly well-known people as the show went on. Diana Rigg anyone?

I am going to watch The Rings of Power, but it's proving logistically difficult because the only device in the house that is signed into Prime Video is the PS5, which runs through the TV. The problem is that my daughter wants to watch it too, but her schedule is much worse than mine, so I have to find times to watch when 1) I'm not brain dead from my own schedule; and 2) she isn't around, to avoid spoiling her. I'm going to try starting today while she's at the hospital all day. I do not care in the slightest about who was cast, but I do care about whether this is a good representation of Middle Earth from a storytelling perspective.

I did a Sporcle quiz name matching first and last names of famous philosophers. Wow, but were there a LOT of LOST characters named for philosophers. I mean, I knew there were, but seeing it in a list like that made it really hit home.

Day 12: Who is someone that you share the most fandoms with?

I think it would probably [personal profile] uisgich. We met in the LOTR fandom, did lots of collabs until we drifted to other things. Stargate SG1 and SGA. But then [personal profile] uisgich nagged me until I started watching Supernatural and we shared that fandom for many, many years. We did one fic together, but mainly were cheerleaders for each other's creative efforts.

I got aggravated with that show, and then discovered Captain America/Winter Soldier fandom (before the Winter Soldier movie came out), and then it was my turn to do the nagging. [personal profile] uisgich fell happily into the Stucky love. We haven't collaborated on anything in this fandom though. And Game of Thrones! Can't forget that - [personal profile] uisgich pushed me into watching the show after I had read the first book and decided I didn't have time in my life for an extensive, door-stop of a fantasy trilogy (it was still supposed to be a trilogy when I read the first one).

We beta for each other all the time, because even if we're not actively creating in a certain fandom, we share the same tastes and we've consumed the original media (whatever that happens to be). We're constantly pushing each other to try different things. Like I got her to watch Julie and the Phantoms most recently.

I watered my new plants. And I voted. That's how I'm celebrating. And wearing an Earth Day shirt.

I had planned a nap for later, but the people behind me are getting a new roof today, so it's noisy. And I don't have any window treatments on most of the windows on that side of the house. It faces north, and I have lots of plants that like the diffuse light.

After voting, I went by Michael's to grab some sterling silver fish hook style earring wires. I have a pair of earrings that I love but the wires turned a terrible color once the plating wore off, and sometimes they irritate my ears. After consulting with a friend ([personal profile] uisgich) who makes jewelry, I discovered that the process was pretty simple. The new wires appear to have the '925' stamped onto them, indicating that they really are sterling. In any case, the new ones look much better.

Last night, I watched Love, Simon, a cute, teen rom-com. Where's the ones for the girls though? Then onto Game of Thrones. spoilery thoughts and uninformed speculation )

I read the first book 22 years ago when it first came out, but was very busy at the time and decided that I didn't need another unfinished, epic fantasy series in my life. I finished the book, and never picked up another one. Yesterday, I made a pact with a friend, that if GRRM ever finishes the whole thing, I'll go back and read them all, even A Game of Thrones. Assuming I live that long.

Gonna go make avocado smoosh on toast for lunch.

And Friday was errands too. I have a four-day weekend due to us totally not closing due to any sort of religious holiday, please. Anyway, I ran errands on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, I got most of my errands done including picking up in the store the splurgiest of splurges, which I completely don't regret.

In the words of a wise woman:

I went by Half-Priced Books and picked up a book on backyards, including birds, insects, and flowers that I plan to use for art references. I also grabbed a calculus textbook that my son can help me work through over the summer. I'll pay him back by helping him with stats, since I took that pretty recently while in grad school.

Both college kids called to FaceTime yesterday and at one point were squabbling over who's turn it was. Some things never change.

I activated my HBO subscription yesterday so I'm caught up on Game of Thrones and I'll watch in real time the rest of the way. I've managed to get back into The Magicians and I'm halfway through Season 2. I sort of gave up in the middle of Season 1 because everyone was so whiny, especially Quentin and Alice. It's definitely improved. While HBO is active for the next month, I have a lot of movies marked to watched including the Mamma Mia sequel. I loved the first one and I hope the second gives me even close to the same amount of joy, although if Pierce Brosnan could not sing, that'd be great.

Today I have done nothing of note, other than read fanfic and write letters. I've been in pajamas the whole day and have no intentions of changing that until tomorrow morning. I've been a bad internet friend, but this is my last week of late work nights, so hopefully I'll be better about reading and commenting. I haven't even looked at my own journal and I miss hearing about everyone's doings!

I finished The Umbrella Academy on Friday night. My reaction to the last scene: spoilers )

I'll activate my HBO subscription next Sunday so I have to pay for only the one month that Game of Thrones runs. I'll miss tonight's episode but then I should be caught up and watch the rest in real time. I just have to avoid the internet for a few days!

I've been making cookies for various care packages, and now I think I'm done with baking for a while.

Yesterday (in the pouring rain), I went to the Garden Club's annual native plant sale and got a few things to push the native plant conversion of my yard forward. Three of them are duplicates of things I already have, but I know that they'll work and where the best place for them it. The other three are new and I'll have to increase the size of one of my beds to accommodate them. I'll put off getting them in the ground until next weekend because it's bloody cold this one. So cold that my furnace kicked on this morning.

I wish I could join the Garden Club but their setup is so clearly aimed at people who are retired. Or who don't work. Maybe someday I'll be a woman of leisure and I'll be able to join.

I finished the title piece for the [community profile] smallfandombang and sent it off to my author. I'm still working the main piece, but it's due on March 31, and I'm feeling okay about the progress.

I took my car in for servicing this morning, and then ran out to pick up a copy of Venom. We're having family movie night tonight as none of us have seen the movie. Venom is my son's favorite character from the Spider Man 'verse.

So when I previously said no more washi tape, I was lying. I got an order of metallic washi tape today. What? *shiny*

I've started up watching Umbrella Academy again and I hope to finish that before Game of Thrones comes back. My daughter has been watching seasons 1-7 in preparation for the final season. I don't have the time to do a complete rewatch, but I've been listening in on her rewatch, and picking up details I had forgotten. I didn't watch the show at all when it first came out and I watched seasons 1-6 over the course of a couple of months two summers ago. Then I watched S7 in real time.

My Spring Break is almost over!
