Ellipse Programme
From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum
Ellipse Programme is a French animation studio that was founded by Philippe Gildas and Robert Réa in 1987. In February 2000, it merged with Expand SA where it was renamed to EllipsAnime, but was sold to Dargaud Média in 2003.
Visuals: On a black background, the tall white text "ELLIPSE" fades in, and an orange stripe moves down from within the text and stops in the middle. The "PROGRAMME" text in orange fades in below "ELLIPSE" afterwards.
Variants:
- The animation is absent on the 1990 TV series Zorro, where the logo is in monochrome and is also surrounded by a white square outline.
- An in-credit variant exists on the French game show Pyramide (Pyramid), which has the logo move up the screen as part of the end credits.
- On Doug, the "PROGRAMME" text fades in while the orange stripe moves down within the "ELLIPSE" text.
- On a promo for The Adventures of Tintin from 1995, the logo is shown on the left, alongside the 1985 Nelvana logo on the right. This variant consists of the logo in front of an orange box, and the text "ELLIPSE" and "PROGRAMME" are in black.
- A later version of the logo has the orange stripe replaced with lime, and the text (also in lime) now reads "ANIMATION".
- The Neverending Story has a still version of this variant.
- The French game show Qui est qui (Who's Who) has a different animated version, which is on a gray background. The stripe is also colored red, and the logo (which lacks the "PROGRAMME" text) is inside a black box at the center of the screen. The red stripe is wiped off of the logo to the left, followed by the "ELLIPSE" text fading out and the black box zooming in to engulf the entire screen.
- Earlier episodes of the series have a still version, except the logo is placed further away from the screen. There is red text below "ELLIPSE" that reads "JEUX & MAGAZINES", which is part of the black box behind "ELLIPSE".
Technique: 2D computer animation.
Audio: The closing theme of the show.
Audio Variant: On Doug, the 1991 Jumbo Pictures theme continues into this logo.
