*RING RING* Past Still Unnamed?? It's me, Distant Sparks!! Will you please pick up the phone??

Good news? Turns out the Irregular Webcomic! forums are back up now and everything is intact!

Supposedly...

Bad news? Now you apparently have to log in just to VIEW anything on the forum. Including the news post that David Morgan-Mar says to read for "further info". So now I'm gonna have to create an account just to read the forum? :(

More bad news: mezzacotta is still broken. I can't see this comic or this comic. :(

A bunch of random things I've been meaning to post about

Two things I meant to post about last month but never did for whatever reason:

- On October 12 my friend and I went to the State Fair of Texas! That was fun. I was stressed about it because I'd never had a guest over other than pathvain_aelien, but it turned out well for the most part. :)
- On October 19 pathvain_aelien, ellaina02, and I went to a VR show!... VR demonstration? What would the right term be?

And some things I thought of to post about more recently:

- The Irregular Webcomic! forums are GONE?! Possibly FOREVER?! Which means the mezzacotta, Square Root of Minus Garfield, Lightning Made of Owls, and Comments on a Postcard forums (all of which I read a lot more than the one for IWC itself) are ALSO gone?!
While I didn't like the fact that those forums often had a lot of drama in them, with so many people overanalyzing everything (more so than in Square Root of Minus Garfield itself), arguing about what is or is not art/humor/etc., and so on, and as such haven't been to those forums in a while, there were also just enough forum threads I DID find interesting or amusing that I wanted to eventually go back and read what I missed. Now I might not be able to do that! That was such a big forum, even archive.org probably won't have EVERYTHING!
And that means that since I've linked to that forum sometimes, I'm gonna have to go back and fix ALL of those broken links to point to the archive.org versions. I WAS up to early 2018 in my slow journey to fix everything I needed to fix in my entries... now this sets me back to late 2011! :(
EDIT: Also, does today's mezzacotta (not IWC) comic show up for anyone? It doesn't for me. Nor does this one. It looks like if you put in the date for any comic that has not already been generated, it fails to load it. :(
This is the THIRD TIME (at least) that this comic has been broken in the past few years! I'm scared!

- On a happier note, yesterday I was flipping through a random catalog and in the section for bedroom sets, one of their bed designs is named after Enya. ENYA. That is awesome. Maybe I should pick that the next time I need new bed sheets!
(Also, that same catalog had a section on video games, which makes this probably the first catalog I've ever read to mention Mario AND Enya. This of course made it even better for me. I have a long history of getting disproportionately excited whenever there's a Mario reference AND an Enya reference in relatively close proximity.) :)

!?!?!?!

So, you know how about a year ago Photobucket changed their Terms of Service so that users had to pay $400 a year for their images to be visible anywhere other than Photobucket itself, and sometimes it wasn't even visible there?

And you know that made me upset because even though I've never used Photobucket for image hosting, a lot of things online I wanted to catch up on someday have used Photobucket, and that would mean I'd never get to finish catching up on them?

And you know how I've made various jabs at Photobucket because of it such as claiming that Photobucket managed to even take down my userpics on LJ but not on DW (or vice versa depending on what site you read my April Fools entries on) and being like "These people think Quidd is the worst company ever - haven't they ever heard of Photobucket?!"

Um.

So today I was working on fixing my old entries, and I got to one* that does have an image hosted on Photobucket in it (because it was uploaded by glowing_dragon, not me), and... IT SHOWS UP.

Then I went to a couple of other places on the Internet that I'd been to before that I knew had Photobucket images in them because they became broken when Photobucket changed their TOS.

THOSE IMAGES SHOW UP NOW TOO. (I haven't seen any "3rd-party hosting disabled" placeholder images, anyway - images that users have deleted entirely are obviously still gone.)

...

I need to ask...

Did, uh...

DID PHOTOBUCKET FINALLY COME TO THEIR SENSES?! I'd Google it to find out for myself but I'm too afraid of finding more online drama that'll upset me. (Yes, even when I thought Photobucket was the one company that actually deserved the hate it was getting for changing their TOS, I still couldn't always bear to read it.)

Even the thought that Photobucket MIGHT have realized their mistake is so surreal... I feel like I'm dreaming. I might as well act like this is all a dream, but I can't do that right now because I'm supposed to take Enya to see another Enya perform live at 103:206 PM. :P

*Note: yes, that entry mentions that I was doing an MS Paint meme but I gave up on that years ago because I procrastinated it for so long and felt overwhelmed by it. :(

Super Mario Maker Crash Course Minus Yamamura!

Super Mario Maker Crash Course Minus Yamamura is a comic dedicated to removing Yamamura from the Super Mario Maker Crash Course comic in order to reveal the existential angst of a certain young Ms. Mary O. Mashiko. It is a journey deep into the mind of a manual guide who has become her own worst critic, desperately trying to appear optimistic while secretly fighting a losing battle against anxiety, self-hatred, and fear of rejection in an isolated... video game manual?

So, uh... This is a little Garfield Minus Garfield-esque idea I thought of about two years ago, back when the Super Mario Maker Crash Course comics were new.

Collapse )

Anyway, after two years, my patience has finally run out... I wanted SO BADLY to show that removing Yamamura has about the same effect on Mary O. that removing Garfield has on Jon, I decided I'm not gonna save it for PrtSc Land or iToons after all - I'd just make it NOW and post it here, while there's still at least a chance that no one else has made something similar already.

Though I'm probably safe, because really, has ANYONE else ever been obsessed enough with Mary O. to make this? Does anyone else even know who she IS? :P

Original strip: Super Mario Maker Crash Course Episode 1

Super Mario Maker Crash Course Minus Yamamura: (NOTE: Due to the large image size, it may be broken in this entry, but it will not be if you click on it)

Super Mario Maker: Crash Course Episode 1 but with Yamamura removed much like Garfield Minus Garfield

(And no, I'm not going to do this with the other episodes of the comic - it probably only works with the first one, and even then only because I cheated a little and added an extra line for Mary O. :) )

Who's on first?

I can't believe it - I finished the creative vortex poll I mentioned I've been working on!!

I hope the poll shows up...

EDIT: It did, but I accidentally put "Finish rereading" as an option when it should've been "Finish rereading therapy notes" and I can't change it now. Oh well.

¿Online con troversy? ¡Yo quería online sin troversy!

I am constantly befuddled at the fact that everywhere I look online, I see people who have the amazing ability to read/listen to/participate in online drama that looks like it might be tongue-in-cheek but isn't 100% certain to be so, and not only not experience mental trauma because of it, but actually enjoy it, to the point of starting it just because it's "fun".

I'm not talking about typical trolls; I'm talking about stuff like this (a discussion thread on SROMG ♯1222), this (a discussion thread on LMOO ♯486), and especially this. There's the chance that all three of those are tongue-in-cheek, but if there's a chance that they're not, then there's a chance that those people will overanalyze anything I write in the same way. They're probably not aware of it, but the possibly joking controversy that they "enjoy" completely ruins my life whenever I read it. If the more recent ones continue like they have been, they could ruin some of my favorite webcomics, too.

And even worse, I'm the only person I know of who's affected by it in this way. I might as well call it "Matt1993's Syndrome", since I must be the only person on Earth who has it. Andy Weir of Casey & Andy (a webcomic I discovered because there's a few links to it in Irregular Webcomic!) is the only other person I know of who doesn't like political webcomics, but even he clearly doesn't have Matt1993's Syndrome, as he didn't have any problem with working political discussions in the annotations and even a few of the comics. Don't get me wrong, most of the comics cheer me up, but there's also one that's so much like the Forbidden Comment Threads that I'm not even going to try and find it just so I won't have to read that one again.

And since I'm the only one with Matt1993's Syndrome, no one's ever going to advocate for the rights of those with it... :(

I'm not sure how much sense this makes, especially given that I wrote most of it in only 5-15 minutes. I just felt that I had to rant about it. At least if it doesn't make sense, it proves another point about Matt1993's Syndrome: people (or person, anyway) with it are unable to even talk about controversy without saying something stupid.

The Infinite Loop of PrtScLanditude (finally posted!)

(I finally posted it. Here goes nothing...)

(By the way, pathvain_aelien and ellaina02, I added a few things after the proofreading)

CHARACTER 15: I have a really fantastic idea for a new website.
ELIZA: We all have something we're ashamed of. Don't we?
{beat panel}
CHARACTER 15: Yes. Depressing, isn't it.

What's sad is that recently-- Well, okay, not that recently, due to the long amount of time it took to write this entry, have it proofread, and continue to worry about whether or not it makes sense even after I had it proofread. But last October, I was hit with a realization similar to Character 15's, and I'm not even a randomly generated webcomic character.

afer ventus or the river sings backwards

Yes, look what lids noun gummy iPods leap, yeah, with no wow!

http://forums.tigsource.com/index.…

A PC version of Super Mario Bros. with one twist - the whole game is backwards. You start from the flag at the end of the last level (though I wish they implemented the defeating Bowser and rescuing Peach cutscene backwards) and do everything backwards - put coins back where they were, stomp already-flattened Goombas to revive them, etc. It even shows the credits at the beginning. It's tricky because you have to not touch a coin after collecting it backwards, not stomp the same Goomba backwards more than once, not fall farther than you can normally jump, and so on, but it's entertaining all the same.

(If you don't get it, the subject line of this post is a backwards lyric to Mario Twins by Group X)

EDIT: NIP!! Megs and nukes say Nair a-- Flush now so rare purples say air puffs, Ned? See it? No? NARF!!...Yep! Your fish lay hang it note! "Yeah, well, f*** on the easy SNAAARRRR!!" says the open Malfoy! Oh, ow! Yep! Oh, no! (Translation: I beat it! I was disappointed it only had three levels though. Hey, I have an idea: quote backwards Group X again!)

Writer's Block: Don't Call It a Comeback

The French term "l'esprit de l'escalier," which translates literally as "the wit of the staircase," refers to those perfect, clever comebacks that you only think of after the fact. What's the best came-too-late comeback you've ever had?
Pretty much anything I've ever posted online. I'll try to make a comeback online, then think of a better comeback and thus edit my original one. I end up editing about three times, then the next day, it turns out I had an even better idea for a comeback but it was too late. One of the reasons I've stopped posting to SmackJeeves and the Homestar Runner Wiki Forum.
