2010 nnwm procrastinator

Holy inside joke, that was a long hiatus!

Well, I turned 29 last month. I thought that THIS year, I wouldn't be too depressed or unmotivated to write an entry about what I got for my birthday this year and would manage to do so AND finally post about what I got for my 27th and 28th birthdays as well. (I mean, I did post about some of my 27th birthday gifts, but in an unconventional entry and also didn't mention all of them.) But, sadly, I was still too depressed/unmotivated to get around to posting it - just not for the same reasons this time.

And today is the 15th anniversary of my LiveJournal. For years I've had an idea for something cool to make and post for the 15th anniversary of my LJ (or even the tenth anniversary since that's how long ago I thought of it!), but with so many other things on my to-do list, I never got around to working on it even when I was feeling okay - guess I'll have to aim for having that be an 18th or 20th anniversary post or something. And again, I was hoping to at least post an LJ comment stats entry for this year like I used to do every year for the anniversary of my journal, but I guess I'm once again not motivated enough to get around to that.

You know what's an even more odd milestone than the fact that I'm 29 years old, or that it's the 15th anniversary of my journal, or even that I'm coming up on my fifth anniversary at work (and am already well past that if counting before I was hired on full-time)?

The fact that I haven't posted an entry to LJ or DW in EIGHTY-SEVEN DAYS.

I didn't even realize it had been that long until about a week ago! To be fair, in July there were comments on the LJ version of my May entry so I have an excuse for not noticing it had been that long, but still... EIGHTY-SEVEN DAYS.

That's the third-longest hiatus between entries in my ENTIRE history on LiveJournal - and the only two hiatuses that were longer were December 2007-June 2008 and June 2008-February 2009.

Do you know how long ago that was? THIRTEEN YEARS ago.
So long ago that LJ wasn't even my favorite hobby yet and for over a year all I did on LJ was post a few entries and join one already-inactive community. I really do mean a few entries - the entry in 2009 that ended the hiatus and marked the beginning of LJ becoming my favorite hobby? That was my TENTH entry out of 1,535. (For that matter, it feels like it's been a while since my 1,500th entry, yet apparently I've only posted 36 more entries since then including this one?)

Does... Does that mean LJ is no longer my favorite hobby? Even when I was worried about rumors about LJ shutting down, or about drama on LJ, or the possibility of offending people - and even those when I INTENDED to go on a hiatus from posting for a while because I was worried about what people think! - I still liked LJ enough to post to it at least once a month, or at the very least more often than once every 87 days. That makes me sad. :(

I'm definitely still not going to LEAVE LiveJournal, but... wow. :(

I miss my LJ friends from the old days. I miss having friends on here that I feel understood by. Not to say that I DON'T have active friends on LJ or DW who understand me, but I don't feel as understood as I used to. If more of my LJ friends from the good old days were still here, I'd probably be more motivated to post. I worry a lot about what my newer LJ/DW friends think (or might think) about entries and comments I wrote in the early days, when I did a lot, lot, LOT of oversharing on LJ (something that I'm probably not even any better at avoiding now).

I don't know what else to say right now. There's many things I want to post about, but some of them good and some of them are bad (and the bad ones are very different from one another) so I'm never sure how to post about both good and bad things that happened without coming across as insensitive or tone-deaf like I end up doing pretty much EVERY time I EVER try to post about anything.

What it's like to be obsessed with a REALLY obscure Mario character

So I found this two-part YouTube video called "500 Characters I Want In Smash Bros. Switch"...

The first thing I thought was "Even with that many characters and the likelihood that most of them are going to be joke characters, I bet this list is STILL not going to even consider Mary O. even as a joke character..."

No one remembers me :(

Every time he put in a joke character (a non-game character, an Internet meme, some random fanart of a character who's already in SSB, an inanimate object, his dog, etc...), I was like "He included this but probably didn't include Mary O..."

Towards the end, I was like "29 characters to go and still no Mary O..."

At 491-500, the end of the "whatever video game characters he could think of" section:
INTROSPECKTIVE: The Sims. Diablo. A ******* Tetris block. Mary O., the--
ME: *pauses video to have a chance to process whether or not I heard that last part right, then fanboys because this guy ACTUALLY THOUGHT OF MARY O. EVENTUALLY... even if she's number 494 on the list, she's one of the few he felt the need to explain where she's from ("the guide from Mario Maker"), apparently a half-eaten grilled cheese sandwich and other joke characters are higher priority, and this is an entertainment video anyway and not a list of confirmed characters, AT LEAST HE REMEMBERED MARY O. EVENTUALLY*

I wanna know who did that fanart of her he used, too! I didn't think Mary O. could possibly get any cuter but I was wrong ♥

So, yeah. That's what it's like to be as obsessed as I am with such an obscure character. :)

I'm guessing probably none of you would know who Mary O. is if it weren't for my journal but have any of you ever been so obsessed with any obscure-ish fictional character (doesn't even have to be a crush) that you get THIS excited if anyone so much as knows who that character is? I don't want to feel like I'm the only one who's like this...

Weekly Miiverse Backup: Posts from 01/05/2013 3:30-5:30 PM

I made thirteen posts on Miiverse on January 5, 2013 (though I've only put the first six in this entry). For nearly a year, that was the record of most Miiverse posts I made in a single day (if not counting replies since those weren't in the backup...) And no, I can't think of anything about that day that would make me post to Miiverse more often.

Before that, my record was nine posts each on December 29 and 30, 2012 (and thus, so far those are the only other two days that I turned into two-parters in this "backup my Miiverse posts on LJ and DW" series).

What do you think of these Miiverse backup entries so far? Should I post them more often? Less often? Include more Miiverse posts at a time? Less Miiverse posts at a time? I know probably not all of you are interested in these but I like having my Miiverse posts still existing on the Internet in some form. :)

(It's been a while so I'm not sure what Pikmin Adventure boss I was talking about [probably was a Bulborb of some sort though] but it must have been pretty early on in that game - presumably before the first timed mission judging by the order of my posts. I don't think I ever 100% completed any of the Nintendo Land games. Maybe I should finish that someday...)

(Except the invincibility stars from Mario are more commonly known as Super Stars nowadays, and I believe they've been called that since Super Mario 3D Land which is before Miiverse even existed. I guess I thought "Starman" was the term more people on Miiverse would recognize, but now I'm not sure.)

LJezzacotta (or DWezzacotta) meme!

Being obsessed with a) mezzacotta, the randomly generated webcomic that's (retroactively) been around since 9999999999999 BC, and b) nerdy math-related stuff, I thought of an idea for a LJ/DW meme that incorporates both! Back in July or so. Why didn't I post it until now? For that matter, I'm surprised I didn't think of this meme before July 2017.

Anyway...

1) Look at the mezzacotta strip from your birthdate:
http://mezzacotta.net/archive.php?…

2) Look at the strip(s) from the day you joined LJ and/or DW and/or any other blogging site you use regularly - if you don't know when that is, you can go to your profile and find out (at least for LJ and DW):
http://mezzacotta.net/archive.php?… (LJ)
http://mezzacotta.net/archive.php?… (DW)

3) Optionally, also look at the strip(s) from any other dates that are significant to you!
I'll skip this step, though - while there are many other dates that are significant to me for whatever reason, I think I'll just use my birthdate and the dates I joined LJ/DW for this.

4) Put in the same dates from steps 1-3 again but with AD changed to BC. You can do this just by putting a minus sign before the year in the URL:
http://mezzacotta.net/archive.php?…
http://mezzacotta.net/archive.php?…
http://mezzacotta.net/archive.php?…

5) Put in the dates from steps 1-4 again, but replace the years with the last two digits of them:
http://mezzacotta.net/archive.php?…
http://mezzacotta.net/archive.php?…
http://mezzacotta.net/archive.php?… (...so is he going to show me or not? :) )
http://mezzacotta.net/archive.php?…
http://mezzacotta.net/archive.php?… (A hair restorer on leeches?)
http://mezzacotta.net/archive.php?… (I guess a penny isn't enough.)

6) Now take the dates from steps 1-3 and replace the year with your LJ and/or DW (and/or other blogging site) user ID! On LJ and DW at least, that's also on your profile.
(Any time I say to replace the year with a number that isn't a year like your user ID, do this for both BC and AD if the AD version exists [i.e. the number is between 1 and the current year]. If it doesn't - which it won't 99.9% of the time - then just use BC.)
http://mezzacotta.net/archive.php?…
http://mezzacotta.net/archive.php?… (I'd say that's changing focus more than just "a bit". :P )
http://mezzacotta.net/archive.php?… (Yes, I even combined my LJ user ID with the date I joined DW and vice versa. Because that makes a lot more sense than the strip I got by doing so!)
http://mezzacotta.net/archive.php?…
http://mezzacotta.net/archive.php?…
http://mezzacotta.net/archive.php?… (The first panel of this one is the best part.)

If any of these methods gives you an invalid date:
Year with leading zeroes - remove the leading zeroes.
Year is 0 - use 9999999999999 BC (13 nines), 1 BC, and/or 1 AD instead. Or, if this happens in step 5, replacing it with 100 BC/AD makes sense too.
February 29 in a year that doesn't have one - use February 28 and/or March 1 of that year instead.

Armiigeddon

Well, today is the day that Miiverse is shut down at 10 PM PST. (which would be midnight in Central where I live, so... I guess for me, it's not actually today? Whatever.)

Out of all the drastic changes this year (so far), I think this is the only one that I'm not all that upset about. Miiverse started out as probably the most positive online community ever, but it didn't stay that way for long - eventually it went so downhill, it's been years since the last time I visited Miiverse itself. I'd still read posts whenever they appeared in game (Super Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Nintendo Badge Arcade, etc.), but I think the last time I went to Miiverse itself was 2014. Maybe 2015. I didn't even hurriedly try to find a way to save my own posts somewhere. (Though while looking up information about the discontinuation, I did notice that there's a way to request a downloadable archive of my posts, but I doubt I'll have time to figure out where to go to do that in the next few hours.)

...okay, forget what I said about not being all that disappointed. NOW it's making me kind of sad. :( Maybe I'll try and get an archive of my posts after all.

EDIT: Submitted the request! That was easier than expected. So easy, I must've done it twice by accident because it told me I submitted it already. :)

While I'm on Miiverse for the last time, have some random stats about my Miiverse account:

Following 53 users

256 posts (hey, a nice nerdy number! And I wasn't even trying to have any of these be interesting numbers!)

1,788 Yeahs

Last post was on November 23, 2016 in Nintendo Badge Arcade. (Though it ALMOST was not the last post; for Valentine's Day 2017, I had every intention of celebrating by putting badges of the lovely Mary O. and a bunch of hearts from Zelda on my HOME menu because I'm the sort of dork who would at least consider doing that and posting that to the Nintendo Badge Arcade community. I did in fact make such a HOME menu, but didn't post it because it wasn't Valentine's Day yet - and for whatever reason, making it again on Valentine's Day and posting it slipped my mind. Probably because that was so soon after work started.)

I only made two Miiverse posts overall in 2016, and none in 2015 - the last one before that was on July 29, 2014 in the NES Remix 2 community. (I'm not surprised that this was so soon after Lucina and Robin were confirmed for Super Smash Bros. 4 - I do remember how the last time I checked Miiverse regularly, it seemed like EVERY SINGLE POST in the SSB community was like "With my Levin Sword, I'll _____".)

Speaking of which, my bio is:

"I'm a sensei; i.e., SNES am I!
(translation: I've been playing video games since the NES and SNES. My all-time favorite classic game: Super Mario World!)

I can't wait to play Super Smash Bros. 4, but I'd be even MORE excited if people would stop whining about the roster being just SLIGHTLY different from what they want. I really hope that there'll be less of that once the game's released..."

...SSB3DS has been out for over three years, and in a couple of weeks, that'll also be true of SSBU. I went THREE YEARS without updating that bio. Why do I have the sudden urge to turn up the hearing aid that I don't have?

Well, whatever. At least now my Miiverse posts will be turned into an ice cube so future generations can thaw them out and marvel at my same-length legs! :)
homestar essence of gullibility

Color me midnight disappointed

This has been kind of a disappointing April Fools' Day because:

1) Homestar Runner didn't update at all today, even though they did for April Fools' Day 2014, 2015, and 2016, and April Fools and Halloween are almost the only times they ever update nowadays.
2) I don't think many people noticed my April Fools prank at all.

For reference, my April Fools prank was this entry; however, when I first posted it (on March 31 in my time zone, but late enough that it was April 1 already for some of you), it was an exact copy of my first entry. Then I waited a few minutes or so and changed it to a copy of a different past entry in the same way... then changed it to another after a few more minutes, and so on - basically, if I was at my computer, I'd change the entry anywhere from once an hour to once every few minutes. (At first. I gradually updated it less and less often because it seemed like no one was noticing...)

By "exact copy", that means including the subject line, repost button, userpic, tags, mood, music, location... basically, everything except the timestamp, the comments, and friends-only status [though, of course, the only friends-only entries I used were ones that probably would've been fine being public]. And anything that I intended to change each time but accidentally forgot sometimes. Though if I used an entry I'd posted in _dreams_, autism, or asperger, I added a notice saying that it was cross-posted (even though I don't think copying a community entry to my own journal years later for April Fools' Day actually counts as cross-posting).

I chose the entries semi-randomly, sometimes by going to my Calendar for random years and months and picking a random entry I'd feel comfortable posting again, and sometimes by just putting in notable entries that I remember and wanted to include in this prank at some point. Some entries were used more than once.

And just to mess with your heads even more, I thought it might be fun to come up with a hypothetical FUTURE entry and add it into the mix! That's what the 2023 year in review is for. It ended up being my favorite thing about this prank, so I left that one up significantly longer than any other single entry.

Now that April Fools' Day is over, all the entries I ended up using are listed below for posterity. (Don't expect the repost buttons to work correctly, though...)
