Summary:
Gandalf exclaimed once: 'That I should live to be 'Good morninged' by a son of Belladonna Took!' Bilbo's mum has a story to tell and this is it. Holidays by the Sea, Elves, and much Falling in the Water.

Reccer's Notes:
This is such a lovely story about Belladonna Took, an adventurous hobbit herself. We read/hear it as she writes it down while pregnant with Bilbo, and she tells the story of a journey she took when she was younger and "less respectable". It's an action adventure and quite fun to read and listen to, a really nice background for her.

Summary: "There was a terrific row when Nana found out I'd only written one letter so she's sent me to write to you all properly, only I don't have anything left to say now and I do think it's silly to have to copy out the same letter twice." Posy Fossil's letters to her sisters from ballet school in Czechoslovakia, 1936-1938.

Reccer's Notes: Ballet Shoes is a delightful story about three sisters in 1930s Britain, their guardian, and their nanny. At the end of the story, one goes off to Hollywood under a studio contract, one goes to live by an aerodrome to learn to fly, and the youngest (Posy) goes to Czechoslovakia to be trained as a ballet dancer. Posy, the youngest, loves her sisters but is also self-centered and focused on her dancing. This is the first time she's ever been away from her sisters since she was a baby, and the letters trace that relationship even as they're hundreds and thousands of miles apart. But no matter how far apart they are, no matter how different their lives are, they still love one another. [personal profile] deepdarkwaters captures Posy's character, and her relationship with her sisters, perfectly.

Summary:

I took the stars from my eyes and then I made a map.

There are rules of diplomacy that you have been trained to follow. There are realities that you have been educated to expect. You are poised and dedicated and intelligent and professional, and there are horrors in the universe that you don’t want your sisters to know. There are false maps to terrible places that you don’t want your sisters to follow. You know that you can’t protect them from everything, but this you can protect them from for a little while longer.

Reccer's Notes: I am partial to stories that explore why people join Starfleet, and this is an excellent example. While the story talks about Uhura's motivations, it also explores her relationship with her younger sisters. She is both inspiration and protector to them, and she's very aware of her role.

This story takes on both the promise and sacrifice of going beyond traditional roles. Yes, Uhura accomplishes so much, but those accomplishments come at a cost, a cost she doesn't want her sisters to know about because she wants them to find their own way.

Danahid's writing is always exact and meticulous and beautiful, and this story is no exception. There's so much in these 1800 words, including a beautiful ending.

Content notes: This is about Gaila, so there are mentions of enslavement and prostitution.

Reccer's Notes: I am fascinated by stories of how people come to Starfleet and what it must be like to meet people from such disparate backgrounds. This story approaches this subject with grace as Gaila and Christine Chapel become roommates at Starfleet Academy and must figure out each other's very different values and expectations. By opening up to each other, they forge a friendship. I like how creative the author is in describing Gaila's background and culture. The cultural exchange never feels heavy-handed. It's conveyed with tiny, realistic details like borrowing things from someone else's desk.

In addition to the cultural exchange element, the story weaves in ideas of resilience and having the power to change your life.

Reccer's Notes:   There are a few really good Christine Everheart stories out there, but this is my favorite.  It hits my competence!kink very hard.  Christine is an ambitious, hard-hitting reporter, and this fic shows that to a tee.  Handed a puff piece on the late Mrs. Maria Stark, Christine realizes that there is something fishy, and goes digging.  I love watching her figure out how to find the pieces to the puzzle, and then put them together, and I love learning about Maria Stark, too.  Very well done and worth the read.

Summary: Past may be prologue, but it is not destiny.

Reccer's Notes: This is part of the previously recced Pi'maat series, but I pulled this one out to rec separately because a) it's got a different main character from the rest of the series, and the MCs from the rest of the series are bit players in this one and b) unrequited love is not the main theme, but it's a thread running through it. Though it's a bit of an odd take on it, considering that the person the MC has unrequited love for is her husband. (But they're Vulcans, so it was an arranged marriage.)

The MC has been through hell, abused from childhood (including by her husband--he's genuinely changed, and would never again hurt her, and has been telepathically examined to prove it).

This is a story about healing, about the way the past shapes the present but doesn't have to define it. There's a mystery to be solved, with spies and assassins, and a great adventure plot once the mystery is solved. And through it all, as much as Kiri is healing and getting her life together and serving as the catalyst for great, galaxy-changing events, she craves a loving relationship with her husband, which seems forever beyond her reach.

(I have labelled this as Voyager, because Tuvok is a major character in it, but it's set on Vulcan after Voyager's return, with a cast of 99% OCs + Tuvok and Tom Riker)

Content Notes: Child abuse (non-sexual), domestic abuse, violence (canon-typical), mental illness (depression), mentions of suicide (no on-screen suicidal ideation or actual suicide). Mentions of war, genocide, and other nastiness, all more or less canon-typical, and probably not nearly as grim-dark as I'm making it sound...

Reccer's Notes: This fic does several things marvelously well. It does an amazing job of exploring and building on the Layla/Steven/Marc relationship. It takes the worldbuilding we are given in the series about the gods and their avatars, and deepens it. It subverts all my expectations of the action part of a superhero story. Content note: The main character is Chinese American, I don't know enough to be able to tell if the things that are mentioned in passing in that regard (especially re: grieving rituals) are accurate or not.

Reccer's Notes:
It's a story about two characters who navigate their new friendship and fall in love while grieving the death of their best friend / brother who canonically died in front of their eyes in a traumatic accident they both feel guilty for. They both have their own previous trauma, and the story shows them very carefully navigate that.
The story keeps up the atmosphere of the game, this sort of comfort through people being good to each other. In this case, it's Alex and Ryan, whose burdens of trauma are made lighter by being there for each other, taking care of each other.

Summary: Pi'maat - (n.) family, kin; lit. small clan. [Vulcan Language Institute]

Reccer's Notes: I recced this series several years ago, back when it was only 51k long. Now it's 316k! But you do not have to read all of it, each fic is complete in itself. It takes place during and after the Dominion War, and it's about a family of Vulcan OCs and their friends. The main couple for most of the series both suffered trauma during the war; one, psychological, the other physical. There is a child abuse ring that gets busted. A side character came to Vulcan because it was a safe haven from her stalker, and she's pretty messed up about it. The most recent story in the series is about a woman rebuilding her life despite being really messed up by child abuse. There's a lot of trauma, and it's all handled fairly realistically and with compassion.

And also, there's a lot of healing. There's a lot of support. There's a lot of people going out of their way to help one another. It's lovely. (So is the worldbuilding, BTW)

Instead, Joan is traumatized when the bank she works at is robbed, and runs away. In this story, Joan makes a different choice about how to deal with her pain, and everything goes differently from there. Theme: black characters, characters of color, competence, women being awesome, female characters, gen, character development

Summary: “This broken white boy needs our help, doesn’t he? On account of how you sort of ruined his life?”

T’Challa winces and shoots the frozen Sergeant Barnes a hilariously guilty look. “That’s not—I didn’t—really, I think his life was already—”

“It’s fine! I can clean up your mess,” she tells him, still smiling. “And he didn’t—he didn’t kill Baba, so. We should help him, we should make it right. No one else can help him, can they.”

How Shuri deals, after Civil War and Black Panther.

Reccer's Notes: Shuri is the smartest person in the room, and she knows it, and she can fix (almost) everything. Which makes it even more devastating to come up against things--like grief, and trauma--that can't simply be fixed, that have no technological solution, that simply have to be lived through. This fic explores that in such a delicate way, and I love it.

Theme: black characters, characters of color, friends to lovers, female characters, family, rare pairings, pretend couple, everyone thinks we're dating, creator rec

Summary: “Bucky’s not my—“ my anything, Sarah almost said, before she swallowed the automatic denial.

Dina was going to be here until the new year. Sarah knew from experience that her mother-in-law could fit a lot of introductions, and blind dates masquerading as friendly dinners, and just plain set-ups into those weeks. The woman was more relentless than a Match.com subscription. But here was an easy way to avoid all of that, and all it would take was one harmless little white lie.

“It’s new and we haven’t really put a label on it yet,” she said. “Just seeing how things go, taking it slow, you know?”

Bucky and Sarah have busy holiday seasons ahead of them: Bucky's reconnecting with his family, and Sarah's former mother-in-law has come to stay for her annual holiday visit. As if that wasn't enough, Sarah and Bucky both have to deal with well-meaning relatives trying to set them up with other people when that's the last thing they want or need. There's a simple solution to that problem though, in the form of one little white lie to get them through the stressful holiday season. They can claim to be dating each other.

Reccer's Notes: I'm going to be reccing several of napricot's stories this month, because they're an incredible writer and have written a lot of Black characters. Bucky and Sarah had so much chemistry in the show, which the show-runners wanted to do more with but didn't have time to do. Napricot does a beautiful job of taking the ball and running with it. It's tropey goodness you won't want to miss.

Theme: Competence, Adventure, Female Characters, Folklore & Fairytales

Summary: Calvin's missing. Mr Bun is suddenly a very real rabbit with startlingly big teeth. Some fairy tales are apparently real things that happened, they just happened somewhere else.

Now Susie has to rescue Calvin from the land of the fairies and get them both home before dinner, or she's going to be so grounded.

Author’s Notes:

…after rereading all of the comics I realized I really wanted her to have a very Susie adventure, instead of just one of Calvin's with the serial numbers filed off. I hope you enjoy and have an excellent holiday and new year!

Fun fact: this story went through 4 major major revisions. Hansel and Gretel showed up in one, the Woodsman in another, the Snow Queen in a third. Every time it stopped being a story about Susie Doing Things and more a story about Susie Reacting To Things Passively and I scrapped it to start over. I wanted this to be Susie's story and spotlight and I hope that came across!

Reccer’s Notes: I’d say Elemental more than achieved that aim. Susie (who sets out on her quest Crazy Prepared, with food and water and a first-aid kit) comes across very much as a baby Pratchett heroine, saving the day with only the sort of equipment and skillset available to a bright and diligent primary-schooler—including compassion, ingenuity, and a knack for rules-lawyering that bodes well for her intended career.

Reccer's Notes: I love the way the author marries the historical attitudes toward gender with kindness and care and understanding, because the general attitudes of society are not necessarily universal. I love the thoughtful way the author adapts the characters and plot to the difference in gender and orientations here.

Theme:
Indigenous characters, Female characters, Family, Fanvids, Gen

Summary:
I'm posting the bulk of the Notes from the video here as there isn't a summary as such.
Rabbit-Proof Fence is the true story of Molly Craig, who, in 1931, at 14, was taken from her mother in Jigalong, a depot on one of the fences that were being constructed across the continent in an attempt to keep marauding rabbits from destroying the western farmlands. Along with her half-sister Daisy, 8, and cousin Gracie Fields, she was taken to the Moore River Native Settlement in Western Australia.

"I would not hesitate to separate any half-caste from its aboriginal mother, no matter how frantic momentary grief might be at the time," wrote one "protector". "They soon forget their offspring." He maintained it was just like removing a pup from a bitch. The film would show the terrified children sprinting across stony wasteland in a futile attempt to escape the police, distraught mothers wailing in the dust, and an aged granny battering her head with a stone in impotent frustration. It would show the girls in a cage as they are transported by train to their new home and a culture of flogging and solitary confinement for those who failed to appreciate what the white man was doing for them.

One day, when the coming rainstorm would hide their tracks, Molly, Daisy and Gracie set off for home, traipsing across the desert, scavenging from farmers and aborigine hunters, cooking what little meat they could obtain over an open fire, close to collapse with hunger, heat and exhaustion. For long parts of the journey the girls followed the rabbit-proof fence.

After walking for nine weeks, Molly and Daisy were reunited with their mother (though Gracie was recaptured). They disappeared into the desert, just the sort of uplifting ending the film needed. They are still living in the Jigalong area, 600 miles north-east of Perth - two days on a bus, followed by a couple of hours in a truck.

Reccer's Notes: Even though this maybe isn't a conventional fanwork, I wanted to rec it as it very much fits the theme, and as it's very powerful, and records the "Stolen Generation" - something that should never be forgotten. With the music, and the choice and editing of clips from the movie to compress the essence of the movie's story into a brief video, it's exactly like a music-based fanvid. Watch to the very end, for the happy ending and some comfort, after all that hurt.

Reccer's Notes: This is such an incredible vid that I was sure someone would have already recced it, but as far as I can tell, I'm the first! As the summary says, it's a gorgeous tribute to the female characters of Firefly, set to 'Defying Gravity' from Wicked, and it's just so well-made. I never get tired of watching it. That moment at 1:34 where the music kicks into a new gear and River starts to run? Chills. Every time :D

Theme: Unusual Jobs, cultural differences, epic works, female characters, interspecies stories, robots androids & ai, science fiction, worldbuilding

Summary:
Kim Montgomery, freshly-minted PhD in anthropology with experience among immigrant populations, is hired to help a group of immigrants with cultural barriers. It's not until after a very strange job interview which includes questions like "Which was a better movie, Independence Day or E.T.?" and "What is the difference between a wig and a hat?" that she gets to learn just who these immigrants are: the Autobots, alien machine lifeforms who have been fighting an interstellar war for centuries, and whose presence on Earth is still a closely guarded secret. Best case scenario, she might get to publish something about her work among the Autobots in a few decades. If there's anybody still left to read it.

Reccer's Notes:
I was reminded of this series a few days ago, decided to re-read the job interview scene, and ended up reading the whole thing. It's got that kind of pull.

The character work is great, and the worldbuilding is amazing (and all the more impressive for the fact that the author has built a coherent picture of Cybertronian society and, for want of a better word, biology, out of bits scattered by a franchise that has never been very concerned about consistency).

This series has been recced here before a couple of times, but not since it was completed last year; it now has a dramatic finale in which the fate of the world is resolved and various long-hanging plot threads are tied up.
