Themes: Mystery and suspense, Friendship, Cops and Crime, AU: Fork in the road

Summary: He’s in a booth around the corner, hands folded on the Formica table. It’s his jacket, the one he had on when he jumped onto the train, so Ray believes it’s him. But it’s not the guy Ray knew. His hair hangs to his collar. His eyes are dark with exhaustion, his face gaunt. He’s been gone nineteen months. It might as well be nineteen years.

Dief’s whine is thin, a little panicky. He’s shivering against Ray’s knee.

“Hello, Ray,” Fraser says.

Reccer's Notes: This is a tough story, but I keep going back to it from time to time because it's just so good. Set more than a year after Ray Vecchio stumbled and missed the shot so that Fraser left with Victoria on the train, Ray meets up once more with a very changed Fraser in a motel at the ass end of Canada, in a blizzard. It's sad, spooky, and wonderfully written. Powerful and haunting, and very much worth a read.

Author’s Notes: I really struggled with putting this back up again (sorry I know I'm a flake) I have a love/hate relationship with it. But here it is.

This is a repost (it's all over the internet in various formats and languages) but it is mine.

I wrote this a looong time ago, before I really had a GREAT understanding of the naming conventions used in the untamed. Some of it might be incorrect.

Reccer's Notes:: Although November’s Mystery & Suspense theme would apply, I’m using Uncommon Settings to shoehorn in this beloved modern-with-magic paranoir fic in time for Halloween; the intrigue-haunted waterfront city of Lotus, patterned after Venice, is very much a character in its own right. (Note that, despite the geographical inspiration, nobody seems to have been whitewashed.)

medium blues has a history as cryptic and elusive as its subject matter: for various reasons (including having been targeted in the fandom’s 2020 cyberbullying scandal) the author—along with this fic—has periodically vanished and resurfaced under a succession of pseudonyms.

Reccer's Notes: In some versions of canon, Dick Grayson is Romani (although canon never explores this). On the very few occasions that fic writers choose to include this detail in their fics, it does not tend to be explored in depth, for understandable reasons (Romani culture being generally closed to outsiders and thus hard to research). This fic goes full-on into a young Dick's cultural identity and his perceptions of the white people around him after his parents are killed. It's a very compelling portrait of a grieving child dropped in an alien, hostile culture.

Summary: The Witchblade brings Sarah to Cascade, and into the lives of a Sentinel and his Guide. All Sara wanted was to start over, but Cascade's no ordinary city. Can she and Jim solve a series of murders before it's too late?

Reccer's Notes: I'm a big fan of the Sentinel, but barely remember Witchblade; however, this series tugged at my curiosity. I was blown away by how well the author made these two fandoms intersect, and how well Sara fits with Jim and Blair. As I suspected, for someone who has very little knowledge of the Witchblade universe, this was a perfect introduction to Sara and the Witchblade. As Jim and Blair get to know Sara, the reader does, too; we learn what the blade does and how it affects Sara -- and, through her, Jim and Blair. As the series progresses, the three grow closer; Sara learns that she can depend on Jim and Blair, and they learn how to temper the 'blade's worst effects on Sara. Each story is a solid case fic, requiring sentinel and guide and witchblade and wielder to resolve.

Content Notes: Canon-typical violence and injury to victims.

Summary: A sudden shock in Batman's life leads to his apprehension at the hands of the GCPD.

Reccer notes: the author takes what we know of Gotham and Bruce Wayne and makes a fully functioning (but not perfect) infrastructure.  Batman gets arrested and, due to extremely traumatic events, being drugged, and having a master manipulator working on him, has a mental breakdown.  What happens next is that the justice and mental health systems do their job, with a level of detail that shows either extensive personal knowledge of how the system works in real life or a lot of research.  There are no quick fixes, no easy outs, no miraculous comics "oh, I'm all better now!"  But it's all interesting and very well-written, and one of my favorite DC comics fics.

Summary: The pressure is on at CI5 and the margin for error is zero.

Reccer's Notes: This video is layered with things I love and my rec focuses on three of them: Color, Motion, and Technique.

The vidder is an accomplished fan artist as well and you see that skillset in the vid. Selective coloring to draw attention to parts of the frame, over saturation, color bleeds to stark black and white - it makes for a rich looking video.

Motion, the cuts on action, the action match cuts. The video, starts with a retouched still shot and takes a few seconds to get into gear. From there, it is a relentless rush of action to the end.

Each frame of this vid showcases some sort of thoughtful, purposeful effect. I often feel like zzebeddy's work comes straight out of an artist's studio instead of a digital non-linear editor. Whereas most software will easily let you drop a LUT or coloring on the timeline, or add some cool light strobe or film grain over the footage, the effects in this vid feel very hand crafted.

These elements, along with a banging song, shot selection, and a canon that I love, combine to make this near 50 year old show look vibrant, urgent, and relevant. I rock with this vid!

Summary:

It's six in the morning, and Steve is heading out on a run when he nearly trips over a bouquet of sunflowers on the front steps of his brownstone.

For a second paranoia takes over, and he kicks the flowers a little, waiting for them to explode. They don't. They also came with a card, which he picks up. The front of the card has a tasteful picture of the Brooklyn bridge at sunset. It's very nice and sedate, like the kind of card you would buy to give to your boss. On the inside someone has written a short message in big, shaky block letters.

I AM SORRY FOR SHOOTING YOU.

Steve sits down hard on the steps.

Reccer's Notes: There is a theme with my MCU comfortfic, and it's that Bucky takes charge of himself (however tenuously), realises his agency, takes his own revenge, finds his own support network, and figures out how to heal along the way. These kinds of fics just give me so many feelings! The Goddamn Kids in this one are some of my favourite OCs, and the fact that Bucky does not heal in a linear, perfectly complete way is so real and wonderful.

And on a personal note Bucky calling Steve sweetheart or honey or babydoll is just my favourite thing ever.

If you're not familiar with the fic, please do heed the tags/warnings as some of the coping mechanisms Bucky uses are not healthy, and the characters do discuss his (and their) past abuse and trauma.

Summary: So his new partner was surprisingly not completely un-attractive, for a human. Gavin Hayes had impressive aptitude scores, and a friendly smile, and eyes sharp as winter currents, taking in the station and remembering names and details with an ease that belied his causal charm. All things that transcended species boundaries and general integumentary inadequacies.

It didn't mean Sezin found him sexy.

Reccer's Notes: A sweet romance, with tentacles.

Sezin and Gavin are detectives in an integrated hirsa/human colony, and Sezin is adorable as he discovers he has a crush on his weird, fuzzy mammal of a partner and tries to come to terms with it.

The source material is unfamiliar to me but the author does such a great job describing these characters and their circumstances that I caught on fast and was immediately cheering for these two to get together. The banter is great, the pining and flirting are wonderful, and the drunken rambling is amazing.

I also really love how respectful Sezin is about Gavin's choices. Even with Sezin's biology wanting him to be possessive and claim Gavin for his own, Sezin always makes a point of reminding himself that they're from different cultures and he can't assume things and that he'll be fine with whatever Gavin wants, and I really appreciate that. It meant I got all the fun of that possessive behavior without the ensuing feeling of yikes.

Summary: “I wouldn’t be holidaying in Midsomer,” said Miriam. “Their murder team works harder than we do. You’ll probably trip over six bodies before the week’s up.”

Reccer's Notes: I am a lot more aware than I used to be about copaganda, and the ways in which even fandoms like Rivers of London can play into it (by telling the reader that there are whole departments as focused on justice and truth as, say Seawoll's team, and that the injustice and racism in the system is a relic of the past on its way out--basically, by selling the fantasy that there are at least some parts of law enforcement that are the way they should be). And Midsomer Murders is definitely copaganda.

That said, this is still a good story. It's entertaining, it lampshades the absurdities of Midsomer Murders (you have how many deaths in small towns in one county?) and the Seawoll perspective is really great.

Summary: In the episode Cypher, Blair was kidnapped and drugged by a psycho serial killer, David Lash, who drowns his victims after assuming their identities. Jim saves Blair and kills Lash. Cypher happens during the first season, when Jim and Blair's friendship and working partnership are new. "Permanent Ink" starts after the rescue but before the last scene in the episode. It's told entirely from Blair's POV.

Blair waits to be discharged from the hospital after the rescue. Physically he's recovered, but mentally he's barely hanging on. Little things he encounters set off flashbacks and panic attacks. He's guilty that he wasn't able to win the fight with Lash and about how much damage was done to the loft as a result. He's afraid that he's going to let Jim down, and thinks Jim is being kind when he says Blair "did everything right" while captured. He jokes about Jim as his "Blessed Protector", then worries he's put too much on Jim's shoulders, while secretly believing implicitly in him. All of this is done through a jittery internal monologue that echoes the slightly manic Blair we see onscreen.

Reccer's Notes: In TV Land you can be damaged in any number of ways and come back the next week perfectly fine. The beauty of fanfic is that writers take a more realistic approach and delight in filling in the interstitials. It's quite reasonable to assume that Blair would have repercussions, despite his desire to support to Jim. This is angsty and humorous at the same time, and what comes through it all is Blair and Jim's emerging friendship. Enjoy.

FYI, T kind of posts all over the place, most often for challenges like Sentinel Thursday, and she's been one of the most devoted Secret Santa contributors in the past several years. Blair also happens to know about sentinels--he was studying them before the accident that claimed his sight. Although he's adjusted well to his new reality, he can't help being a little bitter. He's found the sentinel he's been searching for but is unable to study and help Jim the way he could have before his blindness.

Reccer's Notes: Although Jim and Blair do the same jobs they did in canon, there are significant differences. They obviously meet in a different way, because Blair is no longer working on his Sentinel dissertation. Also, Brumeier has set the story in present time, so Blair can have the benefit of today's technology to help him cope. She's used the experiences of a blind acquaintance to add realism to Blair's situation. He's obviously been adjusting for a while, so there's less angst in this story than in other TS disability fic. Enjoy.

Themes: Bisexual/Pansexual Characters, polyamory, AU: criminals/mob, cops & crime, m/m/f threesomes

Summary: As a supervillain supercriminal contract worker with a morality deficit, Clint Barton leads a glamorous life. You know, stolen cars, dangerous women, a really confusing relationship with a meddling do-gooder, the works. It's pretty awesome. Except for, uh, medical bills, the mob, and being on the run all the time. That part isn't all that awesome.

(A supervillain AU where Clint shoots arrows at people and gets beat up a lot. So, not really that much of an AU.)

Reccer's Notes: I did beta on this fic, and at the time I told the writer that if this didn't become a fandom classic, well, it just should be. Happily, I think it has. There's all kinds of content that I was not really looking forward to (fisting with a metal hand, BDSM bloodplay, criminals getting away with it) but the writer is so skillful that it just felt like character development and entirely necessary.

This fic is so funny! I laughed every few paragraphs. The prose jumps off the page. Everyone feels so real. I wanted to know what was going to happen to them next and didn't want it to end.

It also deals with Clint's deafness really well. Disability in fics can be a real bugbear of mine, it's so often done badly. But this is fantastic.

Even if you don't know the fandom (I'd only seen the Avengers movie, not read the comics) I highly recommend this fic.

One evening he gets an unusual proposition: a customer who wants to buy his services; not for sex, but to simply sleep with the stranger for the night.

I love how fast Jack accepts what's happened to Sydney, and the show's theme of family plays a big role here as well. It's a competence fest and makes Sark/Sydney work more than even this shipper typically sees.

Despite having worked and lived together for years, it's definitely different wearing another man's skin.

Reccer's Notes:  Excellent crossover, great geeky & fannish Peter&Lucas friendship fic.  It's written in Lucas' POV and his voice is perfectly written and really interesting and quirky with lots of references to popular fandoms like Dr Who and plenty of great humor too.  In the story, Peter and Lucas met online and only knew each other pseudonymously until their jobs solving weird crimes bring them together IRL.  This fic brings together two tiny fandoms but you only need familiarity with one or the other to love this fic, both just makes it twice as good.

Summary: During an MI6 investigation into black market sales of Ministry of Defence assets, James Bond discovers what he believes to be a human trafficking ring called the Marketplace. He infiltrates the organisation as a buyer, but remains focused on his goal: follow the money trail.

On a private Marketplace cruise, one slave for auction catches Bond by surprise. Q is brilliant, ethereally beautiful, and vulnerable. Bond is instantly drawn to him, and he resolves to take down the Marketplace and rescue Q. What Bond doesn’t realise, though, is that Q is right where he wants to be.

Reccer's Notes: This fits the proximity theme in that once Bond has bought Q, he's trapped on a cruise ship with him, and forced to play the part of a "slave" owner, no matter how alien that concept may be. I enjoyed this fic because it was Q mainly driving the intimacy, with Bond out of his depth, but still needing to present a front for the sting operation. The tension set up with one person "owning" another, but the "slave" actually being the experienced one, was nicely balanced and satisfying.

Chris has his own concerns about the situation: Vin was supposed to be back in Denver on Monday and he's overdue. Summary: This takes place sometime before Night Shift in Season 3 and diverts, never to return. Jim receives bad news from his past. A couple who helped mentor him after Bud died (in the episode Remembrance) have contacted him after a long estrangement with news that the husband is dying of cancer. He is in a hospital in Seattle and wants to tell Jim something before it's too late.

Meanwhile, Jim is assigned a bizarre case: a Rainier professor has been murdered in a most gruesome way. No one seems to know why, and his loner ways are making it hard to figure out who would want him dead.

On top of that is a disturbing development: Blair's office phone has been tapped, his mail is being opened and his files and journals at work and at home have been rifled through in a very professional way. Is it possible everything is related and, if so, what's the common denominator?

Reccer's Notes: This is a twisty, turny story that plays off a lot of the anxiety-producing themes from canon: Jim's uneven childhood that informs his present abandonment issues, Blair's insecurities over his place in Jim's life, the problematic dissertation, and how realistic Jim's fear of exposure to the outside world might be.

Additionally, it's told mostly through Blair's eyes. While not precisely an unreliable narrator, Blair's incomplete knowledge of Jim's past, his natural loyalty and admiration of Jim, and his naiveté about people in general and himself in particular, all work to blindside him. Written way back in 1998, "Those Who Can" is edgy and engrossing. Enjoy.

Summary: While Jim is away at a police conference, the new captain of Homicide requests rookie Detective Sandburg for a special assignment: to clear out the desk of a Homicide detective who's had a nervous breakdown. As Simon explains the situation to Blair, it's clear that something hinky has been going on, and it probably revolves around the recently departed, but still very powerful, previous Homicide captain.

It also brings up things out of Jim's past that he'd rather have stayed hidden (no surprise there), as well as a maelstrom that affects the entire Cascade police department.

Reccer's Notes: I like Simon in this story. He's the ethical captain that we saw on the show; that's nothing new. But the way he treats Blair--as one of his men instead of merely Jim's sidekick/partner--says a lot about how Blair develops in his new career. Enjoy.

Simon would like to send both partners on vacation, so Blair can figure out what's wrong with Jim, but Blair is too new on the job to have any vacation accrued.

Not for nothing is Simon the boss. He thinks outside the box and sends Jim and Blair to an unusual seminar. Jim, meanwhile, is watching helplessly as the man he loves is fading away. He confesses to Megan that he doesn't have the right to tell Blair he loves him because of his culpability in the events that led up to Blair's drowning. Besides, he's sure that Blair is straight and he thought he was himself, so he's not ready to declare anything.

But Blair's problems go deeper than damaged lungs or panic attacks. He thinks he's having vivid nightmares, but what's really happening is that he's being pulled into the spiritual plane. And when he starts seeing ghosts who come to visit him with a warning, it's going to take every bit of  Jim's love and support to help Blair survive.

Reccer's Notes: Canon kind of dropped the ball (IMO) by not pursuing Incacha's shaman blessing to Blair. Fortunately, we have a lot of talented writers who make up for that shortcoming. Summary: When Jim's senses come on-line (in canon it takes place in the first episode), he travels back to Peru to get Incacha to help him get back to normal. Incacha refuses and, without a way to control them, Jim is put on desk duty. He decides to wrap up his affairs and go away to commit suicide. During a storm he gets washed off some rocky shoals and is rescued by Blair. Once Blair realizes that Jim is a sentinel, he wants nothing to do with Jim. In the meantime, they both become targets of a mad bomber. Blair is angry that he is forced into a safe house with Jim. Jim hopes he'll be able to use the time to win over the man who might be his only salvation.

Reccer's Notes: Although this takes place in the canon time-frame, the fork in the road happens well before the show's beginning. Yet, it has all the goods that made the show so dear to the fans: the sentinel-guide mythology, good use of minor characters and the enduring power of friendship. Enjoy.
