Theme: Folklore and fairy tales, families of choice, future fic

Summary: The curse on Jan's family has been broken for years, but he's left with a swan's wing and no clear direction for his life. When his sister tells him of Prince Leon, a prince from a nearby kingdom who has just returned from his own curse, he's more than willing to travel and meet him and his new bride, Ida. With Leon and Ida comes Henry, Leon's servant and friend, and together, the four of them muse on curses, the aftermath of them, and just what it takes to get through it all.

Reccer's Notes: No need to know the precises foktales this fic draw from, as the archetypes are often enough: the prince turned into a frog, his princess, the younger son cursed into taking the shape of a swan with all his brothers... The story is not about the fairytales, but what the everafter can looks like when you spent years trapped as an animal, and deals in very clever ways with the afterneath of trauma. I really enjoyed the wordbuilding and the way the author wrote her characters.

Summary: A helpless maiden pursued by a lovesick god, a mother defeated by an envious witch, a helpful spirit imprisoned by a hateful crone—well, that's what the stories have always said happened, so it must be true. Mustn't it?

Reccer's Notes: Over the years, I have been incredibly lucky in the quality of gifts I've received, but [personal profile] silverr just knocked it out of the park with "Wild of Branch and Root." Three stories retold in three separate but related poems, in response to what felt to me at the time as an impossible prompt to write. I wanted to know what it felt like for these characters to become a tree, or be incarcerated in a tree, in the case of Ariel. Now I do. These poems are excellent, moving, and transformative, giving each protagonist agency and voice. Every poem was given its own botanical illustration, too.

Summary:  Once upon a time there was a family with thirteen brothers who were put under a powerful curse. Once upon a time there was a tiny kingdom far to the north, ruled by a young and lovely queen who took in a traveler who did not speak. And once upon a time, inconvenient family history and a certain someone's bad decisions made solving everyone's problems far more difficult than it should have been.

Reccer's Notes:  For me, this fic has everything that I want. It takes place some time after the film, and is a fusion with the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale The Wild Swans. It's all about Elsa finding love, and Hans working towards redemption. It has a great attitude towards its lesbian and trans characters and the meetings of cultures, and features a world in which the Aztec Empire continues on and trade is expansive and friendly. What I really love is that everything is an open possibility here, up to and including two women getting married, even if it's never been known of before.

Reccer's Notes:
This counts as fanfic because it's a retelling of a fairy tale, but Ursula Vernon is a professionally-published writer and the winner of a Hugo Award and Mythopoeic Award for Digger. I adore this take on "The Little Mermaid" told from the sea witch's POV; she does a number on the whole "great romance" trope.

Note: the "Author Link" goes to her "writing" tag on LJ (because that's the only tag on the story), which covers not only the short works that she drops into her journal but also her writing about writing. And the summary is my best guess as to what she might have chosen on AO3 if it were over there.

Characters: Witch, Gretel, Hansel
Rating: Teen

Theme: small fandom, female characters, crossover

Summary: A total retelling of the Hansel and Gretel story. The only thing this has in common with the original, outside of the characters, is Gretel’s intelligence and street savvy. We learn that she got a lot of her know-how from her mother’s teachings and advice; and that she might have more in common with the Witch than expected. This definitely lives up to its title.

Reccer's Notes: Kitsuneasika gives us a surprise crossover with another fairy tale that helps to explain the characters’ pasts and may also hint at their futures. Written for Yuletide 2011 and is also part of a sub-collection that focuses on strong women in stories. Enjoy.

Length: 5K words

Theme: small fandoms, female character

Summary: The story begins at the Beast’s castle, where the curse has been going on for close to a hundred years. Over that time, a procession of women has graced the Beast’s table; though none have been able to break the spell. It doesn’t look hopeful for the latest candidate, Vivian. She hates everything about her situation: the loneliness, the invisible servants, and the Beast himself.

All of this is told through the eyes of Emma, one of those invisible servants. Not only do we learn the back story of the curse, but what has happened since. Sadly, she and the other servants were collateral damage; everyone in the castle was caught up in the magic and the sorrow that was directed at her master.

But Emma has learned to cope and to continue to hope that, one day, the right person will come along to break the spell. Because in the case of magic, anything is possible.

Reccer's Notes: This is chock-full of world-building and very atmospheric. The focus isn’t on the Beast, although he definitely plays his part. It’s about the fall-out from a piece of angry magic and the long, cruel situation that affects everyone who touched him; spreading out like ripples in a lake where a heavy rock has been dropped. Yet it’s also a story of humanity; how people, even those with incredible burdens, still live their lives. Written for Yuletide 2011, this revisionist look at the oft-told fairy tale is definitely worth a read. Enjoy.
