Theme: research (also: comfortfic, fix-it)

Summary: Around him hell had more than broken loose, it was on the loose, and he was right in the middle of its rampage. Grimes had originally been with Eversmann's Chalk Four but somehow they'd gotten separated. He was currently tagging along with a couple squads led by Captain Steele.

"Just my fuckin' luck..."

But at least they had two Delta fireteams along. They were really handy, not least because they knew what the actual fuck they were doing.

Reccer's Notes: Black Hawk Down is... not an easy source to take on, if you do so seriously, if you focus on combat and warfare and operational errors, if you try to stay true to the people who deal with this day in and day out. This is where N.'s combo of ruthlessness and compassion, backed by an entire life's worth of research, really shows. Other than Research, I also added the theme of fix-it based on the author's own notes, and comfortfic because it is one for me. There are stupendous amounts of fucked-up in this story, enough to bury good people under. Some do indeed get buried, mostly via dying. But the thing is - some make it through, and they stay good, and they stick together, and by the end of the story, one of the gross injustices is looking to be undone. And this, to me, is a story that's comfort when life is getting to be a little too much like that.
