Theme: folklore and fairytales, mermaids, fairytale AU, fusion, mermaid AU, arranged marriage, female characters

Summary: Esther's mother had been Mordecai's sister, before the land king's wizard had cursed the sea. Before Esther's parents had been lost and before Mordecai had been confined to this shark's shape.

Reccer's Notes: This is a really interesting fusion that makes the details of the story of Esther and the story of the Little Mermaid resonate with each other in very interesting ways.  (Oh, Vashti!)

Theme: female characters, college AU, female friendship (previously recced), humor

Summary: Mulan is a Resident Assistant on a dormitory floor at a college. Gosh, some of the students on her floor come from really screwed-up families.

Reccer's Notes: This author really knows how to make the best use of the princesses and the college AU. Everything fits, the details are perfectly updated to a modern/real life setting (Aurora has narcolepsy, Mulan is doing college on the GI Bill, etc.) It's funny and thought-provoking, and I love the way the girls all work together to help one another.

Characters/Pairings: Ursula, Ariel, the Prince
Rating: Gen
Length: short (at a guess, around 1,000 words)

Theme: Trope inversion/subversion

Summary: The tide comes in, the tide goes out.

Reccer's Notes:
This counts as fanfic because it's a retelling of a fairy tale, but Ursula Vernon is a professionally-published writer and the winner of a Hugo Award and Mythopoeic Award for Digger. I adore this take on "The Little Mermaid" told from the sea witch's POV; she does a number on the whole "great romance" trope.

Note: the "Author Link" goes to her "writing" tag on LJ (because that's the only tag on the story), which covers not only the short works that she drops into her journal but also her writing about writing. And the summary is my best guess as to what she might have chosen on AO3 if it were over there.
