Summary: Historical AU. In 1947 New York, a motley group of strangers are about to come face-to-face with the idea that you can catch a criminal from within his own mind.

Author’s Notes: Honestly, this came about because of Garcia's hair. Yes, Garcia's hair. Follow me here. There was an episode where she was wearing it in this marvelous retro-40's do, and I started picturing how she'd look in a whole 40's ensemble. And then I started picturing the entire cast in 40's styles. (Boy howdy, would it suit Reid, and Morgan would rock a fedora like nobody's business.) Then I started thinking about how different their lives would have been sixty years ago, and then the social and cultural upheaval of an entire nation coming back from WWII, and . . . well . . . enjoy.

Historical Note: Shell shock was the World War I term, and battle fatigue the WWII term, for what we now call PTSD.

Reccer's Notes: A post-WWII noir mystery AU in which an oddly assorted bunch of cops, academics, veterans, and civilians, coordinated by their friendly neighborhood reference librarian and gossip networker, band together to solve some violent local crimes—and proceed to pioneer criminal profiling in the process.

(When this fic debuted in October 2010, the mystery of Reid’s chronic migraines was an ongoing canon subplot; this setting provides a ruthlessly plausible explanation. That’s all I’m going to say.)

Summary: Before you wed me you must know.

Author’s Notes: _The Virgin Spring_ is a haunting tale. One night I dreamt this version, and was able to write it down.

Reccer's Notes: Rubynye transposes Ingmar Bergman’s adaptation of a medieval Swedish murder ballad into her beloved Bronze Age Crete; she gives this account of its creation in the comments:

I almost feel like I, my waking self, can't take credit -- I literally dreamt this, fortunately on a weekend so I could write it down, complete with the note about the refrain of "this they should not have done". I have loved the Minoans for a long time so it makes sense that my subconscious decided to retell the story there, as much sense as subconsciousnesses make anyway. The Minoans, with a different sense of morality and the universe, wouldn't ask "why did God let this happen" but would note how people in a society should and shouldn't behave (I think at least).

Dreamland delivered its gift to a formidably disciplined, well-read, and eloquent mind: the story begins with a classic fairytale riddle (whose answer will hinge upon a fluid definition of family) and is knit together by an insistent and anguished refrain; the author carefully avoids the film’s conflict of Christianity versus Norse religion in a setting where it would make no sense, furnishes researched hit-and-run cultural color (a traveler gifts her benefactors with the exotic delicacy of…stone-baked wheat flatbread!), and spares an innocent whose fate in movie canon was undeserved—allowing a family to be (though not restored) renewed.

Summary: It's like this: Standing on other sides of a battlefield, exchanging looks and cigarettes and memories and bullets, pretending you don't care, you never cared, and it doesn't matter that suddenly you're looking at each other over a gun.

Or: Dick and Jason might have known how to destroy each other, it was just never supposed to like this, ducking in and out of alleyways and drop sites, watching rockets launch to the moon, and standing next to a wall between two halves of the world.

Reccer's Notes: This is one of my favourite DCU AUs. Victoriousscarf writes Cold War espionage with a deft hand, jumping between decades. The characterization is excellent (especially exploring the universe of this AU, and Dick's relationships and complicated emotions). There's something captivating in how JayDick are enemies but still drawn together, both by their shared past and mutual attraction.

Content Notes: Discussion of the Holocaust, anti-Romanyism, and antisemitism. Details: (skip) Dick Grayson is Romani and a Holocaust survivor (discussed frankly in-text, but there are no explicit scenes of the Holocaust). Two uses of anti-Romani slur. Bruce Wayne is Jewish, and there is one scene where of antisemitism directed towards him (directly challenged by characters). Canon-typical violence. Period-typical politics (and implied structural homophobia). Author provides references and resources in notes.

Drawn to the isolated lighthouse and its curious crew of keepers, Nile discovers the joys of the lonely island, the secrets of its inhabitants, and a curse that may doom them all.

Reccer's Notes: Deeply engaging, almost lyrical AU, with a blending of canon events and supernatural elements that feels 'true', as if could only happen this way. The setting and interactions of the characters unfolds almost sensually, with beautiful strokes of the artist's brush writer's pen. The ending is bittersweet, but with a touch of hope. We don't need more -- the characters will go on -- but we can certainly hope for a sequel someday.

Summary: It's 1969 and Blair, a Viet Nam vet who lost part of his leg in the war, is attending a lecture by a visiting professor. The subject: why the war is going so badly. Offended by the guy, who obviously has not seen combat, he challenges Dr James Ellison's assumptions.

But there's more to Jim than meets the eye, as Blair finds out when they continue their discussion afterwards. Blair might be the one in the wheelchair, but Jim's debilitating zones have kept him from leading a normal life for a decade.

Reccer's Notes: I like how she takes bits and pieces of canon and fits them where they need to be--sometimes with a twist--to keep things interesting and moving along. We get backstory on both. They even stumble across some baddies, and how they handle that reflects on their different experiences. Enjoy.

Summary: Sometime after the Reichenbach Falls incident, where Holmes is believed to have been killed, Sherlock has time on his hands. In this story, he travels to America, specifically New York City. He ends up in a scuffle and, through it, meets Blair. Unsurprisingly, Sherlock recognizes Blair's name as one that has been involved in some controversial publications about enhanced senses.

The time frame for SH is canon, but this is an historical AU for TS, and is a sequel of sorts to Mab's story Strewn Towards a Heaven , in which Jim is a Pinkerton agent. It's not necessary to read that story to understand this one, but feel free to enjoy it.

Reccer's Notes: TS fans tend to see sentinels everywhere, which explains the popularity of the sentinel/guide mythos in many other fandoms. But, really, sometimes it just seems obvious. In the Doyle books, Holmes does have keen observation powers. But some of what he does seems super-human, such as being able to identify any number of cigars by their ashes. I can easily see him being curious about sentinels because of his own sensory abilities. Couldn't you?

Summary: This is a sequel to "Summer of Love", which was my previous recommendation. It's four years later; Blair is going to college and volunteering at a local homeless shelter/soup kitchen, where many of the clients are burnt-out Viet Nam veterans. Blair has just come back from an expedition and is delighted to see Jim at the shelter. Jim, however, doesn't acknowledge Blair, and Blair is afraid Jim is suffering from PTSD.

But trying to figure out where he now fits in Jim's life has to take a back seat. A serial killer is on the loose and targeting vets. Homicide Detective Simon Banks is assigned to the case, and wants to enlist Blair's help in solving it before the killer strikes again.

Reccer's Notes: Although their backgrounds and experiences have changed these men considerably from their canon selves, their cores are essentially the same. It's easy to root for them and hope they will make it through the rough times. Elaine did a nice job showing us what Simon would have been like as a detective, and as a black cop in the 70s. Enjoy.

Reccer's Notes: I love a good Regency AU, and this is a good Regency AU! It's of the type where it's unremarkable for two young gentlemen to get married, but it's got lovely period-typical detail, and carries along all the stifled under-communication that you'd expect from a couple who've been thrust together by finance and well-meaning acquaintances. The broad strokes of the plot echo Actual Tyler Seguin's struggles in Boston and trade to Dallas - briefly and with mixed levels of kindness towards the remaining Bruins - but it quickly settles into Tyler trying to make sense of his new (and possibly temporary!) married life in the country, and Jamie trying to make sense of Tyler.

Reccer's Notes: It seems weird to rec a story for the category of "history AU" that takes place during the period the canon actually started; nevertheless, this is what that is. It's not a story set in Golden Age comics, it's a story asking what if Clark Kent and Jimmy were GIs and what would Lois Lane's career would look like when you actually deal with period sexism and what a guy like Bruce Wayne would have been doing during WWII (if he wasn't already Batman). Theme: Historical AUs

Summary:
When a young thief named Clint Barton saves the lives of Lord and Lady Stark he finds himself caught up in a bewildering series of events, involving an unexpected fortune, an arranged marriage, a blackmail plot, and the full spectrum of spies, lies and secrets.

An unashamedly ridiculous Regency romance.

Reccer's Notes:
The author does a fabulous job of figuring out where each character's background and personality would make them fit into a Regency framework. The only major change from a standard Regency format is that in this AU, same-sex marriage is considered normal and unexceptionable, and this is used as the hook on which to hang the plot. There's some angst and peril, but it's mostly fluff (as a good Regency should be). If you like the Avengers and Regency romances, you're going to love this.

Theme: historical au, epistolary, femslash

Summary: A cross-country roadtrip of sorts, told entirely in postcards, and featuring two damsels very much not in distress who set about rescuing themselves with some help from a carrier pigeon named George.

Reccer's Notes: This is a stunning epistolary story told completely in postcards. Beautiful development of the relationship between the two women as they get to know each other through their correspondence, gorgeous artwork, great characterization, lots of humor too. I can't recommend this one enough.

Theme: Historical AU

Summary:

Kris just laughed. "Do you get—we're talking twenty thousand pounds at least just to clear the debts?"

"Yes," Anoop said. "There's a way."

"Who do I have to kill?" Kris said, dryly.

"Not kill," Anoop said. "Marry."

Reccer's Notes:
So my version of 'Historical AU' skews strongly towards Regency. It's my kryptonite!

Astolat's AU is amazing because it's truly a regency AU--arranged marriage between an impoverished nobleman and New Money, sparks, misunderstandings, and a happy ending!
