Super Mutants are often accompanied by Centaurs, which serve as "watchdogs" and alert their masters to danger.Fallout 3 loading screen

Centaurs are mutated hybrid creatures, named for their malformed legs.[Pub 1]

Background[edit]

Centaurs are large, fleshy mutated creatures mainly consisting of human and canine components, named after their three pairs of leg-like arms.[Pub 1]

In Fallout and Fallout 2, the front pair of arms assist in walking but are connected to the shoulder blades and considered arms when targeted with an Targeted Shot. This is similar to both heads. Two-headed centaurs have two heads, one being canine and the other humanoid. Each head connects to the body by way of a thick, elongated neck, converging into the main body and spine at the base of the torso.[Pub 2] Mom's Diner at The Den serves centaur chops.[1]

Centaurs from Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 are different from their brethren in later games, having two heads instead of one. These centaurs also possess three long tongues and a more upright body.

Behind the Scenes[edit]

  • Centaurs were intended to be placed in the sublevels of Hoover Dam in Van Buren.[Doc 1]
  • The Fallout Bible mentions centaurs as being "a mash of human, dog, and various other parts". It also mentions that centaurs were created by The Master to serve as pets along with Floaters and Super Mutants. This, however, does not mean they can be tamed - as the Bible also mentions they "would be far too vicious to tame" and that "they can't be very comfortable with how they've been, uh, mashed together. No pet centaurs for you."[Dev 1][Dev 2][Dev 3]
