Tunnelers are creatures in the Fallout: New Vegas DLC Lonesome Road.
Background[edit]
Tunnelers are subterranean predators that emerged when nuclear explosions created The Divide, allowing for them to hunt prey on the surface.[1] They reproduce quickly, hunt in large groups, are capable of killing other predators such as Deathclaws, and may even pose a threat to the Mojave Wasteland in the future.[2] The bite of Venomous Tunnelers can be just as lethal as a sting from a Bark Scorpion.[3] As for their origin, Ulysses suspects that they have been around for a long time, and that radiation might have had an effect on them.[4]
The NCR's Bravo Team conducted a sweep-and-clear operation of the Collapsed Overpass Tunnel Entrance before the main force in The Divide.[5] The Bravo Team Mission Orders stated that early intelligence suggested the tunnels were sparsely populated by "subterranean semi-humanoids" which were scared by bright light and loud noises.[5] Bravo Team was issued a Flash Bang grenade for this purpose and was expected to meet minimal resistance.[5]
Gameplay[edit]
Tunnelers are classified as Abominations and count toward related challenges. They are susceptible to direct hits from Flash Bangs and Flare Guns, which causes them to flee temporarily. Damaging them with a Flamer or exposing them to daylight causes them to burrow and resurface in another location. While burrowed, they are invulnerable. When emerging from the ground, they appear as neutral on the compass.

Behind the Scenes[edit]
- Chris Avellone stated that the creatures took inspiration from the 1956 film The Mole People.[Dev 1]
- Joshua Sawyer said that trogs were recycled to make tunnelers.[Dev 2]
Bugs[edit]
Sometimes when attacking in V.A.T.S they will not take any damage, even with an obviously successful attack.

References[edit]
- ↑ Courier: "What were the creatures in the underpass?"
Ulysses: "Tunnelers. Predators that make their own roads beneath the ground here. Divide broke their sky, showed them the world above - and the scent of new prey. Be a slower death for the Mojave than bombs and fire... but they'll come for its people, from where they least expect - below."
(Ulysses/Dialogue) - ↑ Courier: "When you say, 'slower death for the Mojave,' you mean they're spreading out from the Divide."
Ulysses: "[SUCCEEDED] Death'll come from below. In the Divide, need to watch the sky and ground... Mojave'll be easy prey for them. They'll start emerging throughout the Mojave in time, might be years. Probably less. They breed fast, hunt in groups, more than enough to bring down the strongest in the Mojave. Once they draw blood... Seen them tear apart Deathclaws... Deathclaw might get some, but the rest will swarm it, tear it apart, like Denver hounds."
(Ulysses/Dialogue) - ↑ Courier: "Any more recipes.. or histories... you can teach?"
Ulysses: "Antivenom's helpful around the Mojave with the Bark Scorpions. Even one sting can kill you. Tunneler bite can be just as bad. My tribe, Twisted Hairs, had a better way than Antivenom, if you act fast. Snakebite Tourniquet - cuts off the venom, no need to scavenge glands and blood. Or drink that mess. Part of the reason we wore our hair like we did, like I do now. Here's some for the road - trick to making it's not hard. Get bit, hook and twist it. Fast as blinking, doesn't give poison time to sink in."
(Ulysses/Dialogue) - ↑ Courier: "Radiation from the War might have created them. Then detonations, quakes, caused them to surface?"
Ulysses: "[SUCCEEDED] Makes sense. Truth favors that, matches the history of this place. Were signs they were here for a long time, before Marked Men, before what happened to the Divide cracked their sky. If so, they were buried deep. Might have been born the day America's embers started to settle. Seen worse things twisted by radiation."
