"So," Lily smiled sitting down on Remus's couch, "how are the new neighbours?"
Remus took the time to put down their steaming mugs of tea before sighing.
"Gay," he answered.
"That's it? Just gay?" Lily frowned.
Remus shrugged, taking a sip of his tea. The two had moved in the flat downstairs, the one with a little walled garden, ten days before. He had watched them settle in from behind the curtains of his living room, feeling like an old creep, and had done his very best to avoid them.
"Remus John Lupin!" Lily snapped her fingers in front of his face. "What the fuck is this internalised homophobia? I'm not sitting here watching my best friend be upset there's a gay couple nearby as if we were back in Catholic school before we came out!"
Remus snorted.
"Oh it's nothing like that," he checked the clock on the wall and got up. "Come see, you'll get it."
They moved to the window, pushing the curtain aside just enough to watch the little garden but not be seen. A door creaked open downstairs and soon a man appeared in their line of sight, a garden hose in one hand and an ice cream sandwich in the other. He was shirtless. As he started watering the plants, Remus shot a look at Lily, whose mouth was hanging open.
"That one's James I gather," he chuckled. "I think he's got some IT job or something, he works from home anyway."
"Fucking hell he's hot," Lily said.
"Oh yeah."
"His ice cream's melting."
"Yup."
"He's licking it off his fingers."
"He is."
"I want to be that ice cream."
"There you go."
The door downstairs creaked open again and James pivoted, a deadly grin on his face and hose aimed as someone screamed. Seconds later, a man in a black tank top and long hair now both completely drenched launched himself at him, tackling him to the ground.
"That one's Sirius," Remus said, his eyes falling on the rolling muscles visible under the wet tank top. "He just took over that tattoo shop in Pennine, I pass it on my way to work."
"Your bookshop is completely on another street, Remus."
"I know."
In the garden, the two men were now panting on the grass. They looked at eachother and burst out laughing before helping eachother up and putting the hose away before going back inside.
"They're a couple," Lily groaned. "It's so unfair."
"See what I meant?"
"We're really awful. There's a lovely gay couple downstairs and all we can think of is how we want to jump their bones."
They both sat back down on the couch with a sigh. As he sipped his tea, Remus decided that the next weekend he would knock on their door with a tray of the homemade brownies he was famous for and finally be a good neighbour. Until then, he would allow himself to dream about Sirius.
