mixed language

I was watching a Chinese vlogger open some mail and she was like, "If you can guess what's in this, leave a comment," and I immediately thought, "yi ben livre." Which is a combination of French and Chinese that I blame on Language Jones because youtube had just shown me a thumbnail of his video "Stop Mixing Languages." (And he speaks French, which I assume was the connection my brain made, since when I started learning Chinese it was ASL that I kept substituting with, probably because it was my most recent non-native working language.)

language in dreams

The other funny thing about that is that it's a reminder of how differently we think, since I know a lot of people don't think in words and I definitely do. The other day I saw a discussion of dreaming in non-native languages, and several advanced language learners seemed convinced this phenomenon is either imaginary or "bogus" (not sure exactly what they meant by that), despite multilingual people assuring them it's real and normal. I remember my glee the first time I woke up and realized I'd been dreaming in Chinese. But I know a lot of people don't remember their dreams, either, so it must just be different brains with different experiences.

AI face editing

Relatedly, I hadn't noticed any AI face editing until tonight, when I was watching my one of my favorite Taiwanese vloggers and suddenly thought, "wait, that's not a real face shape." (China has a relatively extreme "beauty filter" culture, and constant exposure to it may make people more likely to slide across the line from "very idealized" to "straight up anime" face without realizing it.) I googled AI face editing, and now I can't stop noticing people's teeth. I hope that passes quickly.

AI face editing and faceblindness

Oh, but also, I found a helpful English video about a Chinese demonstration of AI face editing (the comments were definitely from non-Chinese viewers), and it included a demonstration of live AI face-swapping at the end. I'm faceblind, which I didn't think about at all until the face-swapping demonstration, because the face-editing was very clear to me. I could easily see the difference between the edited and unedited faces. But I could not see the difference between an original face and a face swap. It was amazing: the narrator would be like, "here's a Tom Cruise face swap" and I was like, "it's the same guy," and then the narrator would be like, "and here, obviously it's Scarlett Johannsen" and I was like, "what obviously; what are you talking about, it's obviously the same person."

So anyway, I don't know what that means, except that there's something different about AI face editing that's visible to me as a faceblind person in a way face-swapping isn't. (By comparison, I mean, I've never recognized editing without a comparison until tonight, and this wasn't "that face looks edited" or even "that face doesn't look real," but literally "that's not a normal human face shape." It looked perfectly real, it just wasn't biologically possible.)

training with the pup

Finally, Daphne and I met with a dog trainer today, and as I told Marci, "I was impressed by him." She was like, "That's not a reaction you usually have to men." I know. So rare. (I often get along better with old men, and he says he's been training for 50 years, so maybe the pattern holds.) On the strength of our first meeting I agreed to a few "private" classes rather than a group class. No money was exchanged until the end of today's session, so I don't want to gush until we meet again, but he did everything right in the initial evaluation.
silverflight8: cat with heart plush (cat heart)
([personal profile] silverflight8 Jul. 8th, 2026 03:25 am)
I apparently live in a place where there are are a lot of indoor/outdoor cats. I'm not quite sure why I see so many cats. I guess there are just a lot of people with indoor/outdoor cats here (oof - mixed feelings). I live in an apartment with no yard (the building itself occupies the yard) but since I live on the second floor, I look out over multiple neighbours' yards. I love this. I look at my yard constantly when I am home. First thing in the morning, all day if I work from home, with my desk set up so I look out, one last time before bed - primarily for birding and just general enjoyment of the outdoors but, increasingly in the last few months, also for cats. I guess I am outside all the time because I walk to and from the train station, I bird all the time, plus I play ingress, I get groceries on foot, etc. Also okay yes I do randomly pspsps on the street sometimes. I see so many that my friend suggested I start a bingo of cats.

Here is a list:

Calico cat, mostly white with scattered orange and tabby spots - Jenny - very friendly, learned her name via tag and also a poster on the street
Big plush grey cat - no idea, often plopped in the yard now
Big fluffy orange cat - probably lives down the street - this cat I have seen for the longest but have no idea who he is
Small white cat with tabby on head & raccoon tail - Luna, owned by the convenience store
White-and-orange, orange saddle - Noisy
Fluffy tabby-and-white, very thin with age, now deceased - Sarah (learned her name bc she only hung out right by her home and I actually talked to the humans who lived there on occasion). She lived till 18!!! but I miss her and when I pass by her place I still reflexively look for her under the bush she liked. I petted her so many times because she would trot to the pavement and let you admire her.
Fluffy large black cat - probably lives near park
Tabby with white paws and white sliver on back - new, I only started seeing them a week or two ago
Dilute tortie/calico - new within a few months, don't know name

This is Jenny:

This picture is so cute I could die

This is how I learned Noisy's name, though I actually saw Noisy after the poster was put up:

But yeah a few days ago I went to get groceries and as I was walking by I distinctly saw Noisy disappear into someone's yard.

Then there are the cats in windows:

Ollie & Luna, the asymmetric and symmetric tuxies in the window (also learned from talking to the neighbour)
A nondynamic duo of a tortie and a tabby tuxie, always sleeping in a bed in the window
White-and-orange shorthair cat, plopped in the window

I have no conclusion for this entry. CATS. (Please keep your cat indoors!)

I have several pictures of the "coyotes," but none at the top of my camera roll, so I searched my photos for "wolf" (since that's what these coyotes look like to me). My photos turned up an actual Irish Wolfhound, whom I don't remember meeting at all, along with several pictures of Mimi running, which I found hilarious and charming.

Then I searched for "coyote," and lo, this picture came up.

coyote and friends )

One of our neighbors has two cardboard "coyotes" that she puts by the river to keep geese from coming up on the banking. Apparently real coyotes move, so the geese are more convinced by this ruse if the coyotes are not in the same place every time they pass by.

The same neighbor also has a hammock, hence my explanation, "She says the rent to sit in the hammock is to move the coyotes, so I moved a coyote."

(I first encountered the coyotes years ago, at night, while I was out walking with Mimi by flashlight. I genuinely though we had come upon a live animal and I quickly scooped Mimi up and backed away. Mimi was completely unworried, which I admitted after the fact should have been a clue.)
I promise I will stop talking about the seventeenth generation soon, but for now, Mizushima Miyuu, everyone! You should know this story pretty well! Debuting in 2022 alongside Yamazaki Sora, Sato Airi, Hirata Yuki, Hashimoto Eriko, Ota Yuki, Hatakeyama Nozomi, Hotei Moka, and Masai Mayuu, Mizumin, born in Hokkaido, made her way up into the regular members in 2022 and has been a pretty familiar face even to Western audiences since at least Colorcon Wink.

Almost a month after she debuted, she was appearing as a back-up dancer alongside Masai Mayuu for Team K and their performances of the Saka Agari revival, and then in September, she appeared in the line-up for the kenkyuusei theatre performances of Tadaima Renaichuu as part of Junai no Crescendo, again with Mayuu, and as centre for Kikyou—also covered by Iwasa Misaki on her first single, Mujin Eki—which should give you some clue as to Mizumin's career trajectory.

Obligatory mention of Wonderful Love, but pay attention because Mizumin is part of the Wcentre with Sato Airi! She also appeared with Hirata Yuki for AKB's cover of UFO by Pink Lady on the covers album, Nantettatte AKB48.

In terms of senbatsu appearances, since the aforementioned Yukirin graduation single, you can hear Mizumin on Koi Tsun Jatta, Masaka no Confession, and forthcoming single, Suki-ish. Whilst the latter is the first release in a long time without nineteenth generation member, Hanada Mei, it should perhaps be reassuring to know that AKB has a few more aces to play in her absence.

I feel bad that Hanada Mei is now better known for being dismissed than for what she brought to the group.

I digress.

In 2023, Mizumin also appeared in Team B's new production of Idol no Yoake as well as making her first CD appearances. In 2024, she was promoted out of kenkyuusei purgatory to become one of the regular members as a reward for her efforts.

Like me, Mizumin is a Yukirin oshi, which makes her appearance on Colorcon Wink all the more delightful. Stand by for big things from this girl as we're definitely going to see her a lot more in future!

Mizumin!

These notes were all made 12-16-24 before my playing fell off. u_u

Spoilers for various things!

Heir to the Dead:

Aww that tiny whispered 'Please' and Manfred's "Hurray!". 😭 And Manfred can do magic now! Ughhh my feels.

I wish we'd gotten some commentary from the companions before he revived Manfred about missing his presence.

"I have regrets about what Lichdom could have been, but none of them would make me exchange them for this."

Both options meant losing or gaining something, regrets are natural but if what you gained overall makes you happy, it's worth it.

A Murder of Crows:

Lol I knew he would say 'Over my dead body'. If I were Caterina I would at least be a little concerned about Spite;; And I don't think it was smart to just lock Illario up. I'm curious what would've happened if Treviso hadn't been blighted, it seemed to suggest something else would've been an option.

To Act as One/When Plans Align:

Okay now I'm ready for this quest.

Sidenote, Manfred won rock-paper-scissors! I wonder why he likes to hang out on top of the balcony?

Oh, there's Rana at the Shadow Dragon's base!

Okay so this is a/the? final quest so I went and finished Regrets of the Dead Wolf and got Mythal's essence, I was going to use a guide choose the right answers but apparently I didn't save before that so I had to fight her. Not too bad. I also had 'A Hidden Hoard', the Solas mural on the wall is so interesting, why is it there??

Lmao at the fish vs coffee Harding/Neve banter. No way I'd be able to choose, I love both of those.

(Codex) On Beetles: *flashbacks to The Mummy*

I went and got all the chests and altars I was missing except one chest, which is somewhere inaccessible. There's literally people standing there blocking it and there's no way around them. 🤷

The 'Are you sure?' page says many companions have overcome personal struggles / most allies will support you from a position of strength sooo here goes.

Of course they forced an eclipse.

I went around talking to everyone in the Lighthouse and only two people are talking about it, everything else is commenting on stuff that happened in the past;; And ye gods that purple/pink cast on the area is terrible.

Since when does my Rook speak the qun language...

I wonder what equipment with a star on it means?

Grr it's so frustrating when an Ultimate is wasted because the enemy kept moving while I was casting. :/

When Davrin started getting stabbed why wasn't Assan right there? T_T And what happened to Assan/where did they go?

Lucanis died somehow... None of our allies were there to help because everything happened too fast.

I am very confused about what's happening here with Solas......

Davrin on 2nd team, took Harding and Lucanis with me, chose Bellara over Neve, Neve disapproving - understandable.

A Cage for Gods:

Rook: "Have to get back to the team." ...after I explore first.

It's hard to feel bad about choosing Bellara will all these weird statues of her around. Girl probably would have disapproved like Neve did if I hadn't chosen her. 😅

How come Davrin's statues were accepting when Bellara's weren't? Is it because I pushed back?

Varric? What the? Are you saying we were hallucinating him this whole time? Or was it all a dream? This is dumb as fuck. No one talked about Varric being dead this whole time?? Why did Solas tell us to apologize to him???

So Minthrathous gets blighted anyway in the end??

Didn't feel like there was enough development for Lucanis.

[personal profile] asuraid asks: "What is your comfort snack or meal?"

I answer: Comfort meal is pretty straightforward and simple to make! It's salmon, rice, and broccoli, with a bit of salt. I often make it with canned salmon, and sometimes I'll throw some homemade spicy mayo (a bit of mayo and like half a bottle of Sriracha) in with the fish.

This week, my "I Voted" sticker! This was a vote in the primaries. Mixed results in terms of my own votes, but while a few candidates I preferred did not win their races, the ones I felt strongest about did.

There were actually two different "I Voted" stickers for our county. Alex got the other!

This was mostly a good week, especially with only two work days in between my time off! That said... I feel so very behind and like I have so much to get done. Pride was good, and the 4th was good, which were interesting bookends to the week. I feel like I read a fair amount, but don't have anything much to show for it in terms of anything having been finished. Very behind on Dreamwidth in terms of posts/comments/and my own posts. I did finally catch up on my friend's list, and will tackle comments next! Bella was sick for most of the week (starting late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning,) which has not been fun (for her most of all), though at least she seems to feel okay, just having some digestive problems. Even just a few days into my time off from work I already feel like I haven't done nearly as much as I hoped and am wasting the time. :( Hopefully I can turn it around.

My reading for the week.

Goals for the week:

  • We went to Pride!
  • We voted!
  • I finished reading Inkpot Gods
  • I started reading The Tombs of Atuan
  • We had a good 4th of July
  • I made out fancy fruit salad
  • I started my attempt to catch up on DW
  • I did not work on my reading page
  • I did not finish my reviews
  • I did my GYWO check-in for June: 7604 words for the month, bringing the ytd to 65357
  • We had our financial redetermination meeting for the apartments
  • We did not pay rent yet

Tracked habits:

  • Work - 2/7 - I had Sunday off for Pride, and then took Friday and Saturday off to start my larger chunk of time off
  • Household Maintenance - 4/7
  • Physical Activity - 7/7
  • Wrote 500/1000+ Words - 0/7
  • Non-fiction Writing - 1/7 - over 1000 words
  • Meta Work - 2/7
  • Personal Writing - 4/7
  • Other Creative Things - 2/7
  • Reading - 7/7 - I finished Inkpot Gods and started The Tombs of Atuan; I also continued The Fever King as my ebook side-read; Alex and I started Diavola
  • Attention to Media - 6/7 - Monday we went to see Obsession which I quite liked, later had debunking and game videos in the background; Tuesday was game videos and video essays; Wednesday I don't remember; Thursday was just sort of misc background stuff; Friday we watched Alone and then some game videos; Saturday we watched an episode of Ghost Theory after we got home, and I fell asleep to a game video.
  • Video Games - 0/7
  • Social Interaction - 4/7

David Lowery Tackling Adaptation of Horror Novel ‘The Fisherman’ for Focus (Hollywood Reporter). You guys!! Lowery directed Mother Mary, which I didn't love but which had style for days, and The Fisherman feels like exactly the kind of surrealist psych/cosmic horror blend that he could really sink his teeth into. Here for it.

Also in movie news, Park Chan-Wook is making another English-language film, and it's a western! Starring Matthew McConaughey and Pedro Pascal. Put it in my eyeballsssss.

"Couch to 5k for Reading", an 8-week event for building up a reading habit. There are three tracks, depending on your goals. I am tentatively doing track 2 but with harder reading material (classics or nonfiction). Bummer it's on Substack though. :/

Okay so did everyone but me know that Ty Olsson and DJ Qualls (Benny and Garth on SPN) got married?!?! Turns out there WAS a gay romance on the show. Just, you know, not any of the ones people shipped.

Also learned this week that there was a Supernatural "Valentine's Day Special" comic book complete with T&A cover. Published this year, 2026!! These things are never good, and yet I'm so tempted.

The Oasis reunion doc teaser trailer is out. Guys, they titled the doc Don't Look Back in Anger. Here are some gifs from the trailer. My demise is imminent omfg.

Oxford, 1920. For the first time in its 1,000-year history, the world’s most famous university has admitted female students.

This would be rather startling to the ladies who had studied as home students, at Somerville, Lady Margaret Hall, St Hugh's and St Hilda's, before women were admitted to Oxford degrees which was what actually happened in 1920 -

- and those ladies who were still around were there to collect the degrees they were now entitled to.

I am so hoping that this is a blurb produced either by AI or by some intern at the publishers who has not actually read the book but has gathered that it is about women going to Oxford in 1920?

Because if the book is written in some apprehension that there were No Female Students among the dreaming spires before 1920 I hope the author is visited in her sleep by the shades of all, or at least some of, the women who were, who included some notoriously stroppy and acerbic characters.

This is even more egregious than the historical romance which posited a daughter of an Oxford prof at a date of obligatory celibacy for College fellows, which is a bit niche perhaps, but Women's Struggle for Education is surely well-documented???

(Come on down, Vera Brittain, The Women at Oxford: a fragment of history)

In further Did Not Do The Research, or at least have a Brit-Picker, JD Robb Stolen in Death has significant plot around theft of Important Jewels - from the Tate in London, wtf, surely you meant the V&A....

The graphic novel Girl Haven written by Lilah Sturges and illustrated by Meaghan Carter was a lot of fun! :D Ash and a few friends are transported to Koretris, a girl-only world, in order to save Queen Cassandra. What does it mean about Ash's gender?

I loved how this concept was dealt with. It tackles forced feminisation (Ash would like something to happen so that the decision is not hers to make), but the story has her answer her own questions. Junebug is another questioning character, testing they/them pronouns at the end of the book. There's also sapphic representation. For more LGBT Quick Reads, check out my rec list.

Netflix's Enola Holmes 3 was great, as always.

I enjoyed the investigation, the anti-colonialism, and of course the fourth-wall breaking.
The reissue of INDA is today.

I can't express what a relief it is to have the tyops and other messes cleaned up. No doubt one or two escaped, but that can be fixed, now that my rights are back in my hands. Almost twenty years to the day since it first came out; at that time having gay characters as just part of life was pretty rare, especially in main characters, plus an autistic hero. Now I am glad to say there are plenty more out there, yay!

(I still need to download some of the long-lost music [personal profile] sovay has tracked down for me, but at least I have my shuffle sorted enough to do a meme like this. I presume I skip instrumentals.)

Running through the shadows of the forest in the full moon
I sit beside the fire and think of all that I have seen
They say there's a place where dreams have all gone
An old cowpoke went riding out one dark and windy day
If you're looking for a buddy with a hug to share
From the great Atlantic ocean to the wide Pacific shore
She went down last October in the pouring driving rain
Girl don't you every time I see you smilin'
I've been working on the railroad all the livelong day
I thought love was only true in fairytales
I got a mule and her name is Sal
All I really need is a song in my heart
Holy God, we praise Thy name
Theirs is a little house, theirs is
Sleep, my child, and peace attend thee
Well now, ain't this an elegant neighborhood
By yon bonny banks and by yon bonny braes
Ag Críost an síol
Early each day to the steps of St Paul's
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas

...well, that makes no sense whatsoever ^_^ I'm kind of startled there's zero Frank Patterson, but otherwise it's a pretty accurate cross section of my music.

You look up and spy a portrait of the previous Emperor: Rayaya-sanul-nishele-shuye-re-korutak. He is dressed in the same sort of sunburst robes as all of his predecessors, but without it, he would look rather … unremarkable. His skin is more tanned than gold, and his hair is dark brown, especially in contrast to the actual night-black divine horse next to him. The horse looks rather bored, and is called Noras. You're not sure about the wisdom of naming a horse "Hay", but, well, it's not your horse.

The horse in the portrait beneath the center of the "Nokhal's daughters-in-law" text is apparently called Vakhas, like your leader. Or, well, Vashas, in the archaic manner of speaking that they insist on clinging to in their inscriptions here. This Vakhas looks somewhat wary. The Emperor next to her looks annoyed, and past middle age. Apparently his name is Shuyeya-rayaya-nayor-shiviya-luvu-ka-kavutak; or Khuye-rayala-nayor-khivisa-luvuka-kavutak, how you'd say it: The golden Sun's son conquers to the end of the earth.

There's really only one Emperor here who looks cast from the mould of the First Emperor. His name is Tasul-shuyel-suya-shuya-voyase-velotak: The great dawn is the funeral feast of dark night. He has the golden skin and night-black hair, matching the horse next to him – Kiktos, for blackberries – and gazes imperiously at the viewer. Kiktos, for her part, seems to be doing her best to radiate "horse" without any expressions. Like all the other horses here, she is pure black and markingless.

You wonder what the current Emperor, Rayala-vakhala-kivir-tasu-yuruse-kavutak (it's the present; you refuse to use the archaic forms), looks like. The previous Emperor, Rayala-sanul-nikhele-khuyere-korutak, doesn't seem to have been anything special or remarkable, and recently got himself killed in a naval battle with Rlyat. The current Emperor is thus his brother or son or something, but you don't spy a portrait of him, with or without a horse.

I'm doing better now, I think. I did find something new to watch on Prime. New to me anyway. Fallout, which is based on a video game. I've never played the game but that doesn't affect one's enjoyment of the show. Alternate history, a bunch of guys in cool metal monster armour, an underground civilisation of Vault dwellers and a travelling ghoul gunslinger. One advantage of coming in late is that it already has a second season and has been approved for a third. I've just finished season 1.

The noise problems have eased up. Hopefully. I'm always wary of saying "it's all fixed now," but for the moment things are all right. Most people here do the right thing, but there's always a few exceptions; the unsocialised or the blindingly oblivious.

I got mistaken for a resident at the Beaumont the other day. That's the complex where M lives and it's very much the swanky side of apartment life. Not too much of an insult, since I'm 62 and you need only be over 55 to live there. But it was funny. This lady homed in, asking who I am and where I'm from, whereas here at Saint Andrews you don't get a passing look. Most of the people here are still strangers to me after 16 months. To be honest, I could probably stand the Beaumont fairly well, even if it would be a case of being the only trans in the village. The quiet there would be enough. The only problem is deaf folks like M who play their TV too loudly, as I mentioned previously! I think it's just her at the moment, or at least it certainly is within earshot of her apartment. But yeah, socially I can't see myself fitting in, even if I could afford the place. It's just the peacefulness I like.

No other real news. M hasn't done anything earthshatteringly annoying lately, or maybe I'm getting better at ignoring it.

My current zombie epic is slowly progressing, meaning the one I'm writing. I'm exploring how to depict the zombie apocalypse wiping out the USA - sorry USA, but it's traditional - and other countries realising that the virus has gotten out of the USA after all and they're nowhere near as safe as they thought they were.

Can anyone replicate this? (I'm putting in a support request to DW over it, and it would be good to know if this is something special about him, or a more widespread problem.)

And before anyone asks, yes, we've replicated on multiple browsers, multiple devices, and multiple networks.

So next/this year I'm assigned to Wimbledon, a kind of apprenticeship or internship where hopefully I will learn how to actually do the job of a rabbi as a whole, rather than individual pieces of it. They have asked me to write an article introducing myself for their magazine. And I'm really struggling to write something not boring; what I have reads like a list of the places I've lived, worked and volunteered with the Jewish community, like a very pedestrian covering letter. So, if you were a member of a synagogue and there was a new intern about to join, what would you want to know about them? I've included the (slightly redacted) draft below the cut.

this is boring even to me and I'm the subject )

One of my next year teachers has set us for our pre-class homework over the summer "read a book". Like, literally pick up a book and read it. Presumably there's a point to this, I was planning to read some books anyway, but I assume there's more to it than just ticking the box to say, yup, I read a book. Suggestions welcome! If an eminent professor of Bible told you to read a book, what would you pick? I know the prof is an SF fan, she's trying to start a theological SF reading group.

There Is No Antimemetics Division (2025) by QNTM. It's hard to research stuff that resists being remembered. Who knows what it might be getting up to that you've forgotten?

This is the pro-published version of what was originally an SCP serial story published online. I could definitely feel the SCP influence, but I didn't mind it, although it's still wild to me that SCP has narrative now. Back in my day it was only the wiki! *shakes cane*

Anyway, this is a series of chapters that build on each other but connect a little more loosely than a conventional novel. Many chapters are about the UK branch of a worldwide organization researching all sorts of Weird Shit (tm) and specifically the woman in charge of the division on stuff that resists remembering, ie the Antimemetics Division. Some chapters are about her husband. Some are about other random people in the organization. The first chapter is one of those and is a great introduction to the universe and the whole concept; if you're on the fence about the novel as a whole, give that first chapter a try. That segment would make a fantastic standalone short film.

Due to the Weird Memory Shit (tm), many of the characters are totally ignorant of the events from one chapter to the next, even if they were involved in all of them, which makes for some great dramatic irony, especially as we get deeper into the novel and the true threat becomes more apparent. spoilers )

Overwall, a quick read and a good time. I look forward to rereading it more slowly now that I know what's coming.

Harvest Home (1973) by Thomas Tryon. A man and his family escape soul-crushing NYC to an idyllic New England hamlet that still keeps to the old ways--which are, it turns out, not so idyllic after all.

Yes, this is folk horror. In fact it might be the folk horror novel. All the basic stuff you think of is here: outsider fleeing the evil city for the wholesome countryside, idealized rural setting, quaint but then toxic cultural traditions, eventual murder. This is not a case where a genre grew and expanded on the kernel of an idea, or if it did, this is the expansion and not the kernel. The classic tropes and themes of the genre are all fully realized here, described in exhaustive detail. The setting is Connecticut, but the traditions are originally Greek by way of Cornwall, so you do get the British element of folk horror. There's also a developmentally disabled child who acts as oracle, and now I wonder if that aspect of Midsommar was referencing this novel specifically, or if it became a thing in folk horror, and I just haven't encountered it in other things yet.

It's fascinating to me that this came out the same year as The Wicker Man and has some of the same themes, and I wonder what was in the water that led to their parallel evolution. It's also really interesting to me that The Wicker Man was very difficult to access for decades and gained cult classic status via illegal copies, but is now acknowledged as an all-time classic, while Harvest Home was a bestseller but has now, I think, sunk into relative obscurity.

(There's an amazing quote from Stephen King on wikipedia from a 1976 review he wrote for the NYT:
It isn't a great book, not a great horror novel, not even a great suspense novel ... Never mind the best seller list. Mind this, instead: Sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph, it is a true book; it is an honest book in the sense that it says exactly what Tryon wanted to say. And if what he wanted to say wasn't exactly Miltonian, it does have this going for it: in forty years, when most of us are underground, there will still be a routine rebinding once a year for the library copies of Harvest Home".

Now he's a household name who will blurb pretty much any horror novel under the sun, and meanwhile the only copies of this novel in my library system were ebooks.)

Anyway, I enjoyed this quite a bit. As implied by the King review, this is a leisurely book that takes its sweet time introducing us to the entire village and all its quaint ways, most importantly its seasonal festivals that culminate in Harvest Home, which involves the Harvest Lord (elected every seven years) and the Corn Maiden whom he selects. Along the way we spend time with important figures such as the homespun yet venerable Widow Fortune and Worthy Pettinger, a youth with big ideas about modernizing the local agriculture.

We see all this from the first person perspective of family man and aspiring artist Ned Constantine, who has moved his impressionable wife and severely asthmatic daughter to the village. Ned is the kind of guy who meets his wife by overhearing her talking to her friend in the Louvre and butting in to correct her pronuciation. Beth is, I guess, the kind of woman who falls in love with the kind of guy who does that. The book opens with Ned lustfully appreciating how his wife looks in her nightgown, which is exactly as awkward and offputting as you would expect from a male author writing a male character in the 70s. Ned also continually declines to share any of his growing concerns about the village with Beth out of concern that her delicate sensibilities can't handle them. His and the book's attitude towards women gets even worse when he starts inching towards unfaithfulness with the village ~hussy. Basically Ned is kind of the worst, especially as the book goes on. I frankly can't remember the last time I enjoyed a book this much while growing to loath the main character this much, apparently against the intent of the author.

Ned is also dumb as a bag of hammers. His driving motive through most of the book is to discover what happened thirteen years earlier to unfortunate young suicide Grace Everdeen, and yet he is hilariously incurious about anything else happening in the village that he doesn't see as directly tied to this. Furthermore, confusingly, this mystery is not really part of the main plot except as the reader's way into the village's darker underbelly, and the final reveal of what happened to her is frankly baffling as a narrative choice. (It turns out she Read more... )

Anyway, big spoilers )

Overall a fascinating piece of horror history that I genuinely enjoyed. Now I want to read more early folk horror.
I am very glad that we have a second dog in a row that does not care about fireworks!

She'll glance up and watch them for a bit, and then she's mostly just bored.

After making our fancy fruit salad, we did eventually manage to get going and head up to the fireworks show that we were planning to attend. (We were almost an hour later than I'd hoped to leave, but it ended up not being a big deal.) By the time we got up there, the close parking lots were already closed (presumably full, but we saw empty spots...), so we did have to park a little farther away, but having to take a walk isn't the worst thing.

Seven additional pictures, mostly of Bella

The path does go past a little wetland area, where we got to see several birds!

A heron!

Sploosh!

There was also a cormorant, and a little group of very loud killdeers.

We found a spot to set up, which wasn't difficult. While people did continue to come in and join the crowd, it was really not that terribly crowded.

It's Bella! She kept trying to steal the bulk of the blanket.

There were lots of food trucks, and we ended up getting a giant chicken fajita eggroll, which was delicious if an unexpected combo.

There was a band doing 90s-00s covers, which was certainly not the worst, but makes me feel old that cover bands are now covering the stuff I listened to, haha.

Alex and I mostly sat and read our current book. (Diavola)

Bella face!

She was very popular with kids, ha. And somewhat surprisingly, most of them were really good about asking first if they could pet her. (It's basically always 'yes' from us, I just get super nervous in general about kids who run up to pet a strange dog without saying anything! Bella has always been fine, but what about dogs that aren't?)

Bella's favorite toy for the last few months has been this big silly ant.

Playing with the ant.

One more of her with the fireworks.

I was trying to get a picture of her looking toward the fireworks, but every time I went to pick up my phone, she was sure I had a snack for her, so she'd look back toward me instead.

Unfortunately, a large family group had come in and sat right behind us, and a couple of the kids screamed after every. single. firework. I wouldn't ask for everyone to watch in silence, but the top-volume shrieking, and each trying to scream louder than the other, was very unpleasant.

As usual, the finale was set to the 1812 Overture, which is always cool, and may also always make me picture some certain things exploding.

Attendance definitely seemed lower this year, which surprised me a bit. I wasn't particularly interested in celebrating the country, but I sort of assumed plenty of people would be, especially for a "significant" year. A fair number of municipalities had also cancelled their shows due to the fire danger in some counties, so I figured it might draw people in who'd originally had other plans.

I'm glad we went, even if our patriotism levels are at an all-time low. Food and fireworks are good, and again, hooray for 17 years together, ha.

Our last part of our "tradition" is to stop and get a drumstick ice cream cone on the way home, which we also did, and then we ate ice cream before I pretty immediately went to bed, haha.

Discussion: how do you handle your first fic in a fandom?
aikoto: (Imakako)
([personal profile] aikoto Jul. 6th, 2026 09:14 pm)
While I was playing thru HNDR I wondered if the materials needed to make the characters' favorite gifts had a tendency to be the same as the material they give bonus for during explorations (which is the same as the ones they need to upgrade their weapons btw) so I went thru the twins' likes & dislikes and writting down every item's materials to check that theory.

After running this, I have come to the conclusion that these 2 things most likely have no correlation LOL
But I love some useless trivia, so here's the resuts for whoever is interesed:

Ima gives out a bonus for Plants 🌿 and Minerals 💎
The materials needed to make everything he likes (Loves & Like) are: - 845 🌿 / 420 🧵 / 265 💎 / 180 🔧
So his likes do align with one of his upgrade materials.

On the opposite, his dislikes sum: 165 🌿 / 510 🧵 / 210 💎 / 255 🔧
Textiles and machine come on top and they aren't Ima's bonus (they're Kako's), so this aligns as well!

I will put here the full breakdown: Read more... )

Kako gives out a bonus for Textiles 🧵 and Machines 🔧
The materials needed to make everything she likes are: - 1085 🌿 / 595 🧵 / 387 💎 / 320 🔧
Plant come on top by a HUGE margin, so this is a 🚫 for me. Needs so little machine as well.
Something curious is that the plant number mostly comes from her "Likes" list, in her "Loves" she only has 95! Textiles and Minerals are the ones most requested.

THen on the opposite, her dislikes sum: 320 🌿 / 540 🧵 / 289 💎 / 440 🔧
Her bonus materials are the ones topiing her dislikes lol.

Again, here's the full breakdown for Kako's gifts: Read more... )

And since I like to yap nonsense, random things I thought while reading thru their lists:
  • Ima disliking anything related to making photos and videos made me sick in the stomach considering his line of work, Kako seems to dislike them as well though, so I wonder if their family also... Ima said on his Bond "No one will ever take the people I care about from me again" so I wonder if their family also used Kako
  • On the other hand, Ima having childish stuff on his likes (simple toys, winning ice cream) warms my heart... He's jsut 100 days old please understand.
  • I'm surprised Ima doesn't have the handcream on his likes (considering how much he takes care of his appereance) but Kako does!
  • Both of them share lots of likes/dislikes actually.
  • 95% of Ima's likes are either food or money-related, my child...
  • Ima enjoying the risque briefs surprised me, he dresses up very modestly (both in-game and collab art) and due his past I assumed wearing revealting/sexy clothes would bring him bad memories.
  • Kako likes the tsuchinoko keychain but not the snake plushie, baby..
  • I really enjoy the mix of macabre stuff and cutesy & childish objects in Kako's likes; tombstone in one hand, cat plush in the other! Her likes list is kilometric btw.
  • It's so cute how Kako enjoys things that make her feel more grown-up (Makeup brush. wedding dress, girls' swimsuit). She dislikes the more spicy stuff (risque bikini, sexy magazine, underwear) despite being curious about them though!
  • Both twins dislike silverware & everything related to wresting. The silverware was also on Tsubasa's dislikes, I wonder why these kids hate forks so much.
  • Kako hates her mini acrylic stand. I wonder what she thinks of Ima's room...
  • Despite liking reading, Kako dislikes the depressing eroge. Considering how starry-eyed she gets about romance, it's normal.
And while I'm at it they're running an unnoficial HNDR shipping poll over Twitter and Imakako got #20!
It's very low, but considering how most of the fandom decapitates you for liking it, I think it's a very good place!

It's still running, so go vote if you want!

oursin: Portrait of Naomi Mitchison (Naomi Mitchison)
([personal profile] oursin Jul. 6th, 2026 08:28 pm)

So, it looks probable that I am coming up to be the next person to suggest A Book for the in-person reading group.

And I recently had a flash of inspiration, why not something by Naomi Mitchison?

Except that when I come to Do The Research, hardly anything is at present actually in print, chiz chiz chiz.

I really don't think I can moot The Corn King and the Spring Queen which is Very Long.

We're doing a memoir for the meeting next week so perhaps not Among You Taking Notes.

Otherwise it's The Blood of the Martyrs, about the early Christians, not perhaps as good as the earlier Classical Antiquity novels, or Travel Light, which is not my own favourite among her fantasy works.

I really fancied blowing their minds with Memoirs of a Spacewoman but although there is a Kindle edition of the Italian translation, if you want to read it in English secondhand copies come pricey.

(INFAMY!!!)

So I have to think of something else.

To switch to an entirely different track, maybe Rosamond Lehmann, Dusty Answer, the archetypal Sad Girl Novel?

Hell, maybe I should go for Cold Comfort Farm.

This is definitely a post in brief — my mum's visit has taken up most of my time, and the rolling heatwaves have taken the remainder of my energy.

Over two days last week, my mum and I walked another two stretches of the Thames Path — Wallingford to Abingdon, and then Abingdon to Oxford. Altogether, once you add in the walking we did within Oxford, and then in London on our return journey, it amounts to nearly 40km in two days. My mum is 77 years old, and I can only hope that I have even half her energy and stamina at that age!

Here's a photoset from the walk, and here's another from the several hours we spent relaxing in the Oxford Botanic Garden (which as a His Dark Materials fan I have of course visited several times previously, with various configurations of Philip Pullman fansite friends in tow, although not since 2010). Everything was sunny, bucolic, and interwoven with the green Thames, unfurling like a ribbon across the landscape.

We got a new train station, and its existence makes my commute — and therefore my life — a whole lot more pleasant. The Guardian wrote a sort of travel puff piece about it, complete with tourist guide to less well trodden parts of Cambridge.

It's been just over ten years since I became a UK citizen, and I wrote about the complicated feelings that citizenship sparked, right from the moment I received it, on the occasion of receiving my new UK passport a few days ago.

That's all of note for now.

➤ Someone find my motivation for me because it must be dead in a ditch somewhereeee. I have been reading my friends list (slowly, I'm always behind lol) but not been commenting on much. 🥲 And I kept meaning to write up an entry but obviously haven't!! Clearly... I think spreading my journaling out to various places (here, my media log, my physical journal, etc) is making me too lazy to update in multiple locations.

➤ Though speaking of journals lmao I caved and got a super cheap Hobonichi Techo Original A6, 2026 edition, but I'm going to use it next year as a daily journal and just ignore the year/days. I know, I know, I just said I'm too lazy to keep up with multiple journaling locales, but listen...I miss the Hobonichi paper sjhkjsfsdfs now that I'm using a fake Weeks it's just not as nice... So we'll see!! I'm already itching to get a cute cover and start using it but I have to wait until January. 😩

➤ I was finally forced out of Samsung Messages on my phone and now I have to use shitass Google Messages because Samsung hates me personally. 😑 It sucksss give me back my color customization!! However at least now I can see the emoji reacts from Apple users in group texts jsdhfkjsdf it was so funny before because it'd just be like "So-and-so liked [full original text]" five times in a row.

➤ Okay ending with a random music rec, I just stumbled across this Korean duo that debuted at the beginning of the year named dodree who combine pop with traditional Korean music. Apparently both women have a traditional art background (one is a pansori singer and one does dance). This is their latest release; they only have like, 5 songs out so far but I listened to all of them and really enjoyed them so I hope they continue to make music!

With a last-minute booking, I attended the public lecture "Monsters in the math: Black holes at the end of physics" by Dr Matt O'Dowd on Friday night with Nitul and Jacinta. Dr O'Dowd is an astrophysicist at City University of New York, and most famous as the writer and director of the YouTube Channel PBS Space-Time. With some 500 people in attendance, it was a fairly high-level and historical presentation, covering many of the great contributors to the subject, including Newton, the under-rated Mitchell (who coined "Dark Star"), Cavendish, Eddington, Chandraseker, and concluding with Hawking radiation which, if true, means that everything is lost, which is an ultimate end of the universe.

The topic rather reminded me of another physicist whose presentation I attended over a decade ago, which included contributions to the return of a static universe. Expressed simply, the idea is that gravity will pull nearby galaxies closer together, whereas those that have sufficient distance and velocity will increasingly get further away, resulting in a universe of tightly packed galaxies (a very bright night sky), but with enormous distances between these clusters. An issue I have with this is that almost every large and mature galaxy hosts a supermassive black hole at their centre, and they tend to be proportionate to the size of the galaxy. Combined with Hawking Radiation, one is drawn to the uncomfortable conclusion that ultimately everything reaches a complete thermal death where all matter eventually dissolves into a featureless sea of radiation.

Seriously, it's a very long time in the future (a mere 10^78 years according to recent calculations), and there are smarter minds than mine working on this problem, and many physicists think that quantum information will be retained. whether through the holographic principle, subtle quantum entanglements, or highly condensed quantum gravity cores. I readily admit I have not explored the issue in sufficient depth to form an opinion on the matter, but I do know, like with all scientific matters, the degree that we have advanced the modern age is nothing short of extraordinary, and what worries me more is that our moral reasoning instead moves in ebbs and flows over a more fixed range. If this is the case, then ultimately, as a species, there is a great possibility that we'll take ourselves out through our own technological progress. Happy Monday.

I kept putting off posting this until I could make it more coherent but it really is just a collection of thoughts, so.

Before I get started, just yesterday I was reminded to check out goatsreadingseacats which I first saw linked before I finished the game and quickly backed away from because it is HELLA SPOILERY.

So far I've just read the parts summarised in these google docs: Episode 1 and Episode 2, while I didn't agree with all of their takes they brought up a bunch of thoughtful analysis I hadn't considered.

Chances are I will have EVEN MORE THOUGHTS later but I can always make another post.

So it was the USA's 250th anniversary yesterday. Woo... It is probably totally unsurprising that I (a left-leaning queer woman of color) do not have a high opinion of this country. My parents, however, do, and wanted to come see me to celebrate. I said well okay as long as you (physical therapists) tell me how to get rid of this fucking back pain. We ended up going to REI and getting me a new backpack because my old one was definitely contributing to the problems. My new backpack is a day pack from Osprey which definitely has more of a hiking/outdoorsy look. This doesn't particularly jive with my style, and I think the chest and hip straps will probably make me look a bit dorky, but it's better than seriously fucking my already-problematic back up. The hip strap is the biggest improvement, as it helps to distribute the weight to the legs. In addition, the design of the backpack means it sits flatter and closer to my body and is generally lighter all around. Once I put it on and strapped in, I realized... hey, wait, I can stand up straight without needing to lean forward to counteract the weight of the backpack! So hopefully that improves things in the long run. Man, my back suddenly decided to start killing me AGAIN just now... fuckfuckfuck this is horrible I should go cut myself ugh I hate this at least maybe then I can control the pain... whatever.

Honestly I was pretty hexcited about the whole shopping trip we did. First I got a sick new power bank that magnetizes to the back of your phone and wirelessly charges it. I'm majorly excited about this because it means (A) I won't have to worry about juggling a power bank along with my phone, since it just hugs the back of my phone tightly (B) the new power bank is way lighter (C) I don't need a cable to use it. I also got a pair of sandals for my beach trip with wolf bf next weekend! They're by crocs so they're made of waterproof rubber material but they're not, like. clogs. They're cute black strappy sandals with a platform and they're actually super comfortable. Um I also bought some tank tops/camis from Uniqlo because the heat has been fucking impossible and I realized I don't have enough sleeveless tops. And a top from fucking lululemon. I don't want to be that girl who wears lululemon in dance class but my mom had like a $200 gift card or some shit so I ended up buying a shirt. It's not activewear at all, it's a short sleeved cropped button up top that sits really nicely on me. Also I get to be a slut and unbutton it as much as possible. God I really wanted to go into Windsor because there were some hella cute and hella slutty outfits in the windows but I resisted because I don't need to spend non-gift card money on more fucking clothes...

Unfortunately I somehow managed to wreck my sleep schedule all over again. At least my time was spent doing creatively productive stuff. I fleshed out my DnD character a bit. She's an AU version of sickgirl/Syrin, who's plural and has an alter named Luer that's her child self. Then, an alien invades Syrin's mind. Syrin, remembering when Luer formed, mistakes the alien for being another alter, and doesn't believe the alien when she tells the truth about being from another planet and having possessed Syrin to destroy her mind and turn her into a puppet for alienkind. It's like a Cassandra truth situation, where we as the audience know that the alien is telling the complete truth but Syrin can't even conceptualize it because space aliens aren't even a pop culture thing in her (typical DnD fantasy type) world. I love dramatic irony.

I also properly wrote up an information doc about snuff porn studio au (Warning: Should be obviously NSFL from the title lol). It's an AU version of my placeless girls (a group of OCs including sickgirl from above that don't have a set canon and are mostly dolls for me to play with) that's a disturbing (yet also absurd and surreal) story about horrific sexual exploitation. I'm actually quite proud of it so do read it if you're interested. Many people I've shown the document to have read it and Felix seems to be a fan favorite, which I'm kind of touched by... I feel like I haven't been giving her enough love, so I drew a fully-rendered piece of her (artistic nudity, no private parts visible besides part of her chest).

I talked about queer issues and politics with a friend today, which was kind of depressing but kind of cathartic. We also discussed satire because I (satire enthusiast, and comedy enthusiast more generally) got pissed off at people not knowing the definition of satire, mixing it up with sarcasm and parody. Say it with me kids: Satire is a genre of fiction that uses hexaggeration, irony, and ridicule to lampoon the ugly injustices of society. Satire is NOT saying one thing when you mean another (that's sarcasm) or a retelling of a story that pokes fun at it (that's parody).

Speaking of satire, I finished up reading Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood and... by fucking god, that was a doozy. I genuinely gasped out loud at one moment and read the rest of the book with one hand over my mouth. I recommend this book, although it gets heavy and depressing. It's also horrifying in that it feels so current. Like, when I was reading this book I was thinking, "god, this is what our society is going to be like in 20 years...". Well, it's a slight hexaggeration, but horrifying nonetheless.

  • Filipino WTA player Alex Eala has made it to R16 of Wimbledon and the internet conversation around her has been quite racist, downplaying her achievements because she's a "rich Asian" (never mind that the Philippines is a third-world country, and so rich in the PH =/= rich in any other country, Asian or not, and having someone become a professional tennis player takes a village because there's 0 government support for anything other than a men's basketball team). Also like you can kind of feel that people think that Southeast Asians are only valid if they fit the third-world stereotype of not having an ounce of privilege ever. She hasn't even done anything to warrant all this scrutiny, she's just existing politely.

  • Speaking of tennis, I watched 3 (...out of 4) eps of the Nadal documentary on Netflix and it actually made me feel a lot of things. I also enjoyed the dramatically antagonistic portrayal of Novak Djokovic, complete with Big Ominous Music.

  • Saw The Sheep Detectives, a family movie about a flock of sheep who have to solve the murder of their shepherd and contend with the ideas of mortality and memory. It actually made me laugh out loud multiple times. The warm, fun bits were stronger than the sad, tearjerky bits, and I loved hearing 500 Miles recontextualized as a man's song for his sheep.

  • I still don't know anything about Love and Deep Space OR Anime Expo but I'm a little addicted to watching clips of the paid fanservice actors haha especially the ones where they lead interactions or are playing off the customers' energy!

Reccer's Notes: Izzy has hanakaki disease, and I love how the author writes it likes it's an almost chronic illness.  Izzy is an unreliable narrator in how he thinks about Ed and Stede and their motivations.  We as the reader can tell by their actions that their intentions are not what Izzy probably thinks, but Izzy's thought's are very much coloured by the experience he is going through and he's not seeing things for how they truly are, and of course he refuses to talk to Ed about his feelings and what going on, which only makes everything worse.

One note, this is canon-divergent after season one.
