I don't post here publicly very often any more. I'm not even posting anything very private, I just feel like I want at least an illusion of privacy these days and so I default to locked posts.

(Similarly, my twitter and my fb are locked, and I rarely post much to tumblr.)

Since I know a few people without accounts come and look at this account every so often to check up on me: I'm happy and healthy and all that. I'm just not feeling broadcasty right now.

Today Microsoft emailed me to say YOUR ACCOUNT BALANCE IS EXPIRING WARNING WARNING. I had nearly 11 quid on my account when I checked, so I snagged the Nier DLC that I kept meaning to pick up, and Jade Empire because I am apparently Bioware's bitch. Meanwhile the new Blur album came out and I have a copy so I should really listen to that (I'm a dreadfully lazy Blur fan these days). I suspect I'm slightly more excited about the Shouta Aoi and Lagrange Point albums, honestly? Truly, I have gone over to the dark side of weebishness.

The past week of work was ridiculous and exhausting; it's a now three-day weekend and MCM gave out a load of Coscraft vouchers to past winners on Friday so I suspect Monday is also going to be painful. Whee. I really am tempted to spend a lot of this weekend hibernating with videogames and books. However, I will attempt to at least start Dito's hoodie, or the waistcoat for Druitt. Even small bits of progress are progress, right?

Also: Hong Kong in (just over) a month! I'm starting to get excited for the food and clothing already.

Today our bus home hit someone! That's rather more excitement than I'd like on my home commute, but the girl seemed to be fine (and very apologetic, ah britain).

There's some horrible ebooks site scraping AO3 for fics and putting them up as pdfs; as a result all my fics are now only visible to registered AO3 users. I hate doing that but I hate fic-scraping sites more. (I'm not sure if my fics actually evaded the radar or if I'm just incompetent at finding my own fics there, because everyone else I've seen who has fics on AO3 seems to have been scraped.)

I was supposed to be spending this evening writing but nothing of the sort has happened. Sigh.
Right, happy things! Things I am looking forward to:

Busy times ahead )

------

Also, since everyone is doing this at the moment, I am currently excited about three kickstarter game projects:

Ice-Bound: A Novel of Reconfiguration. This looks amazing and the page will sell it to you better than I can; all I can add is that the people involved have produced excellent and interesting games in the past, and the augmented reality stuff looks like it's going to make this an incredible experience to play. It's fully funded already, too, and there's at least one stretch goal to be announced yet.

Elegy for a Dead World: A Game About Writing Fiction. I think that title probably makes or breaks it for you: if that sounds interesting, this is exactly the game for you, and if it makes you roll your eyes then it really isn't. The art for this looks gorgeous, the concept looks like it will work to me, and it's nearly funded with 10 days to go so I think it's going to make it.

Battle Chef Brigade. This has made nearly double its target already, and you can see (a large part of) why with just one glance at the page: look at that art gosh. I think this game is going to make me very happy.

Eee! Things! Things I am going to forget I've backed and then be surprised by when I get updates!
So Fanfic Journal is scraping lj for any entries tagged with 'fanfic' or variants of, and reposting them (presumably because you'd think most of them would be actual fanfics). As you can imagine, a lot of them are personal posts which get tagged with fanfic and get scraped as a result. And currently, a lot of them are posts *about* posts being scraped. It's interestingly meta.

This is a good post about it; that user was kind enough to notify me in comments that a few of my personal public entries had been reposted there. There is theoretically a complaint page where you can object and they'll take down your posts, I am distinctly skeptical that this is likely to happen.

(I would contact the hosting service to complain; whois really only tells me it's Russian-hosted -- which I figured from the site already -- and there's not really any hosting info. The registrar might possibly also be the webhost, and they do have an abuse report page, so I've complained there. And at PrivacyProtect.org. Anyone have more ideas?)

(A version of this post -- before I found the abuse report pages -- appears on that site now, less than an hour later. Amazing.)

I nabbed a Flight Rising account a few months back and lost interest very quickly because there wasn't much to do. However, Pez has been showing me her pretty dragons a lot recently and I had envy so yesterday I dusted my account off. My poor two original dragons have been sitting on their eggs patiently for about three months, oops.

I played some of the games, did some coliseum stuff, and raised some money to play around with. I bought some pretty dragons! Fun with breeding soon!

Since some of my new dragons are still babies, I'll just do a quick overview of my clan instead of individual pics: cut for your friendslist )

Yay! Another time-sink! Just what I needed! Ah well. At least this one gives me pretty dragons to look at.
Pez and I have found a local 'improvers' Japanese course starting in October that looks like it might be pitched at a useful level for us. It specifies that it uses kana not romanji (yay!) and assumes you have enough knowledge to get by in terms of buying food and getting around but not enough knowledge to hold a conversation. That's about right for me, at least. It only runs for an hour a week and isn't particularly expensive, so it's probably worth a try. That's assuming the course actually runs; they sometimes cancel courses if they get insufficient interest.

The website to sign up for the course is a pain in the ass (forms with non-required fields that are in fact actually required before it'll let you submit, etc) and requires you to wait for them to validate your details, so now we're waiting on that step. Yay bureaucracy. The Adult Learning Centre is quite close to our office, so if there's significant delay before they process the login then at least I can go smack them in person.

I called a plumber this morning -- our gas boiler has been non-functional for a fortnight, and because a) it's warm and b) we have a separate shower which heats the water by electricity we've had no urgency in fixing it but it would be quite nice to actually have hot water one of these days. Actual grown-up things! Yay! So now I'm waiting for him to call back. Ho hum.

And I finally chucked my current Rocket Dog sneakers and bought a new pair to replace them (black sequined ones this time). I love Rocket Dog shoes for comfiness but they wear through quite fast on me (usually the shoes give up before the shoelaces do). This pair had holes in both heels, and the left heel was sort of held together by luck and prayer, so it was clearly time even if they were a gift from Pez and so slightly sentiment-infused.

(The Sims 2's university thing ate my evening again, but now everyone's graduated so maybe I can reclaim my life. Yukimura was held back for his early screwup and cried when Renji and Sanada graduated and left the house without him. So much trauma. At least he got to hang around and see Akaya graduate summa cum laude though. Yes, I am easily invested in this sort of thing, shush.)

4 days with no internet, Pez and I are going back to the wild from lack of civilisation.

(No really. BT broke a bunch of stuff and it affected all Openreach customers including those on Sky -- like us -- so like 100k people had no functional phone line (and therefore no internet). And now apparently it's just us -- Pez is on the phone to Sky and they're telling us to disconnect all the phone lines. And apparently the line registers as fine with nothing plugged in. Augh.)

Edit: oh god it's back sweet sweet internet we missed you so much.

(And yesterday our home internet died, so today we had an amusing BT openreach engineer come and poke at it to try and see why it had broken. A glitch, as far as he could tell, but everything's working now so fingers crossed it stays that way.)

I did that until August and then started dropping days here and there -- November was extremely patchy, wow -- but I feel like I'm in the habit of posting here regularly. Thanks to a friend in Tokyo, we've now acquired tickets to go see the Persona 3 stage play that Genki's in -- it'll be our last evening in Japan, and honestly that seems like a pretty good way to wrap up the trip to me.

Today there's a Winter Fair in Colchester, so Pez and I are going to amble along. It'll likely just be a big market, but it'll have nice winter food and we keep meaning to go to local events.

I'm thinking of using Amazon's trade-in thingy for some of my old non-fiction that I never use any more; I'm a bit too lazy to sell single books through marketplace or ebay or whatever, and I will certainly use Amazon gift cards if I have 'em. Anyone done this? Recommended or not?

Today Pez went to forage for food and to take the mail to the post office on her own, earning her all the wife points. Meanwhile, I spent the day writing (D1, because they are somehow easier) and scanning in pictures of pretty boys (for Tumblr purposes) and chatting on skype and on ifMUD. It's been nice and laid-back.

(My leg doesn't hurt now, but it feels like it's misaligned and also like it won't take my weight.)
Listened to the first four episodes of Welcome to Night Vale with Pez last night. I think she's unlikely to listen to much more -- she has the same problem I used to have (and do still have sometimes) with audio-only things, where it's hard to actually focus on it at all for very long -- but I'll keep going. Hooray for weird eldritch happenings and surrealism.

In other news, I have acquired Hakase to Tarou ni Ijou na Aijou to watch at some point, which promises to be also kind of surreal, from the synopsis I just read. Mm, feeding my obsessions, yay.
Today we inventoried all the wigs!

And I seem to have spent the four hours since then arsing about on the internet (talking about Masa and Bachon and Sasaki Yoshihide, in fact) and watching Bugsy Malone. Oops.

If I start on Welcome to Night Vale, how much of my life is it going to eat?
New trainers! I've had my last pair since, uh, 1999, I think. I think I can afford one new pair of trainers per millenium, really. Pez also got a new pair; her last pair are even older than mine. I also bought two scarves (I know, it's swelteringly hot, but they are decorative dangly things rather than functional warm things), and Pez got a pretty floaty dress that I saw and went 'ooo, that would look nice on you'.

We dropped by a gym in town to have a look around - it's cheaper and more convenient than the other ones we've looked at (but has no pool). It also has a month-by-month system rather than long-term contracts, which is nice. So Pez is probably going to sign up for that, and I guess I will too; we can bully each other into going regularly. We do some workout stuff at home but this will hopefully give Pez a chance to do cardio that isn't going to be bad for her back.

Tumblr is genuinely addictive now I've added people, shit. I keep finding hilarious fanart. Send help?
*screencaps some videos and queues up about a dozen photoposts for the next week on Tumblr, wonders where day went... oh*

Uh, meanwhile. The Steam sale comes to an end, and so I can stop lusting after more games than I will possible have time to play. Whew. I did get most of the little indie games I was curious about, though. And the Telltale bundle. Let's hope I find some time to actually play things.

In kitty news, Ja is now basically cured of his patches of baldness. Either it's the change in food, or it's because he's not getting to sleep against radiators (it couldn't be prevented, really, in the last place). He's still unpredictably prone to violence, but at least he's soft and fluffy to the touch. He and Mocha still fight, every so often, mostly around mealtimes. I do not forsee this changing, really. Sigh.

Today's thrilling excitement: we bought a new mattress. The old one is kind of broken (the memory foam has *split* in a couple of places) and we'd both decided it was too soft for us anyway. Now we have a new super-firm pocket-spring one on order. Hopefully it'll be better for our poor old backs.

In other news, I'm trying to slowly go through old entries and tag them (and title them, too); I have more than a decade of entries on here, it feels like a waste for them to be so disorganised. LJ is making a wonderful habit out of breaking at inopportune moments during my tag sprees.

(I wish I liked Dreamwidth more. But my fandom peeps still seem to be here rather than there, and I've never gotten quite comfortable there.)

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

We are watching the Leader's debate on the BBC--I wish the BBC had used a less distracting backdrop, and I really wish that the makeup and lighting people had managed to make everyone a little less bright orangey-pink.

Also I wish Facebook wasn't being so random about which status updates it would show. Sigh.
Well, that was an Easter full of being ill for both Pez and myself--still, it was nice to not be at work for that long in a row, and we lazed around a lot. I played more Final Fantasy 13 while Pez worked on her secret plans for the future, and it was good.

And, since my current daily footwear options consist of three different pairs with holes in, I have to go shoe-shopping. Pez is suggesting I just get these boots--and as long as they agree that subjecting the boots to my feet shouldn't count as 'unreasonable' wear and tear, it might be worth it, even if they're a bit dull. I'm so tired of buying new shoes every couple of months.

I also need a new coat. Sigh.

Meanwhile, links:

I'm reading through these playthroughs of Fighting Fantasy gamebooks. Ah, nostalgia--and the high death-rate he suffers amuses me a lot.

I've also been enjoying recommended inappropriate children's picture books.

And... looking at my internet history, it looks like I've been spending most of the rest of my work-bored-browsing-time on TV tropes, which sounds about right. Whoops.

Hmm, so, I want to get myself somewhere for image hosting (for icons and the like). I could either just get some webspace somewhere--though I don't really think I need an actual website as such--or I could use a dedicated image hosting site. The latter is probably cheaper, but the profusion of possible sites out there is making me blink.

So, does anyone have any recommendations for a solution that's a good compromise on reliable/cheap/easy-to-use?

Today has been a day of tidyingfrenzy spattered with pauses to breathe non-detergented air so my sore throat can stop. I've even polished and cleaned my keyboard.

One of my friends posted their answers to this quiz, and it's a nice idea, but man. I have friends I've met online but have also met offline, so do they count in both columns B and C? How far back are we going for these results? What qualifies as 'talking to someone' from a country, anyway? Having exchanged sentences? Long conversations? More than one or two conversations? Is it actually possible to go to a country and not speak with anyone from there at all? What about people who've moved countries several times, which one do I count them as from?

Also apparently I am ranty today, I see.

In other news, I'm trying to arrange things for November. If I'm reading your NaNoWriMo lj account as a friend of this lj, don't panic if I remove you - I'll be adding you to the friendslist of my NaNo account, since I think I'm going to find it simpler to read everything NaNo-related from there. Oh dear.

I was thinking about Nanowrimo, and vaguely hoping I could come up with more of a focus for it. My basic idea is okay, in that it will allow me to write 50,000 words inside some semblance of a plot. I just wanted to find a new angle to put into it, to twist it all slightly, to try and make it a little bit more than self-indulgent rambling.

I've just realised what the focus has to be.

Last year I did NaNoWriMo, got out 50,000 words of plotless fantasy rambling inside the deadline, and was happy. Very stressed for an entire month, of course, but it was worth it for the feeling of waking up on the last day with twelve hours and only 500 words to go...

This year, I'm going to do it again. This time, it's not going to be fantasy, and with any luck, it'll have a faintly coherent plot.

Let's just hope I don't regret this.
storme: (Default)
( Aug. 8th, 2003 01:55 pm)
So, um.

The aftermath of the flash mobs seems to be a bunch of pictures in the papers (and their online equivalents), BBC news coverage (with me in the footage, gah), and a bunch of weblogs claiming the event was over-planned and staged.

Oh, and I'm in one of the pics on Warrne's Ellis's weblogs.

I've been attempting to clear up some of the accusations - the shop hadn't been told beforehand, for example - but I am mostly giving up. The next flash mob is not one I'll bother with (I'll be away anyway, but even if I was here I'd give it a miss). Though perhaps the news footage won't be as frantic next time, and will therefore feel more organic. I can hope, anyway.

I'll see how flashmob ##2 turns out before I think about going to ##3, at any rate. If it gets less press interest (and fewer bandwaggonners than I am cynically expecting), then ##3 is something I certainly won't miss.
