Methods of Instruction & Active Learning
Examples: The overall scope of instruction is to use a combination of lecture, activity, guided practice, demonstration, and collaborative learning. The instructor leads the class in a series of exercises/activities to warm up the body and focus the mind on the body’s potential for movement. After lecture and demonstration of each activity, the students must analyze the activity for mechanics and sequence and then assimilate the information quickly for performance. Students explore motor patterns through discussion and analysis of the purpose of each activity or skill. Guiding students to make choices in timing, spatial direction, sequence, and force will assist with student skill development. Students work collaboratively to analyze activity challenges and game strategies, solve them, and then evaluate the results. Group discussion, facilitated by the instructor, along with possible video viewing, contributes to this evaluation process.
Assignment for In and Out of Class
Assignment Types: - Substantial college level writing assignment, such as: essay(s), written homework, term/research paper, and/or other (Required).
- Substantial college level reading assignment, such as: textbook, journal article(s), literature, and/or other (specify)
- Lab or field activity, product, and/or report
Examples: Written homework assignments will require students to observe and analyze offensive and defensive strategies of college level intercollegiate or comparable sand volleyball games.
Fundamental course concepts will be reinforced by relevant reading assignments given on a regular basis throughout the semester.
Students will practice sand volleyball skills, techniques, and strategies in the appropriate learning environment. Assignments are designed to help reinforce students' understanding and skills development in sand volleyball.
Methods of Evaluation
Computational or Non-Computational Problem Solving Demonstrations:
Further Methods of Evaluation: - Skill Demonstrations such as class performances(s), fieldwork, performance exam(s)
- Objective examinations, such as: multiple choice, true/false, matching items, completion
Examples: Students' observational activity reports will be evaluated as to appropriate analysis of offensive and defensive strategies, submission in a timely manner, and accuracy of content. All written work will be evaluated utilizing a department-approved grading rubric.
Quizzes on the rules, offensive and defensive patterns and strategies will be evaluated on correct responses, complete interpretation, sound analysis, and appropriate application based on the activity's formally accepted structure.
Performance assignments will be given to students periodically throughout the term to evaluate the demonstration of critical thinking and analysis of the physical movement being addressed, quality and effort displayed in the performance of the objective, and the new knowledge gained from the experience.
Objective exams may be given to evaluate a students' recall of key concepts and fundamental elements of the course content.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibilty
Instruction through the Course Outline of Record includes approaches to teaching that promote inclusion and engagement with diverse student groups using methods that are inclusive of diverse perspectives, address equity gaps, and are accessible to all students.
Teaching faculty participate in college-wide efforts to address equity gaps, such as course-level data review and analysis in program planning, teaching communities, DEIA professional development activities, and Student Learning Outcomes assessment.
Cyclical Routine Review of course objectives, outcomes, content, methods of instruction, assignments, methods of evaluation, representative textbooks and materials, and requisites allow faculty to evaluate each element of the course outline to ensure alignment with inclusive practices and equitable student success.
Course instruction is designed to be accessible to all students, including those with disabilities, and is achieved through professional development support, and District accessibility procedures and accommodations so that all students can equitably participate in learning opportunities.
Design and implementation of instructional materials and strategies, including those delivered through online learning management systems, are reviewed for accessibility and developed in accordance to the principles of Accessibility and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
