Description
Formerly KING 55AD. This is a certification course for American Red Cross water safety instructors and lifeguards. This course enables students to instruct swimming courses and to serve as lifeguards at aquatic facilities.

Course Objectives:
1. Demonstrate the qualities of maturity, dependability and decision making ability, required of a Red Cross representative and role model.
2. Plan, conduct and evaluate the swimming and water safety classes.
3. Maintain complete and accurate records and reports of all classes taught.
4. Develop a plan to keep knowledge and skills current (American Red Cross Instructor Trainer Manual).
5. Recognize the common hazards associated with various types of aquatic facilities and develop the knowledge and skills to eliminate or minimize such hazards.
6. Recognize when a person is in distress or in a drowning situation and apply rescue techniques.

Examples: Lectures and discussions are used to cover the key points of each topic area as identified by the American Red Cross. Activities varying from small task groups, role playing, problem solving activities and group presentations follow any lecture or discussion.
Water activities are included in each session. The activities support and provide additional reinforcement of concepts covered in the class.
Teaching assignments are assigned to each of the student-instructors for a total of four teaching opportunities. Student-instructors are required to develop lesson plans for each lesson assigned. Self-evaluations are completed by each student-instructor following each lesson taught. Peer feedback is given by the "students" in each lesson. The instructor trainer also gives an evaluation of each lesson.

Examples: Block and daily lesson plans are developed for each lesson taught by the student. Students will write a 1-2 page paper conveying how student skill progressions were achieved during the simulation exercise.
Students will write four, 1-2 page self-evaluation papers at the conclusion of each practice teaching assignment.
Textbook reading assignments are required for each class meeting.
Students must each teach four lessons (topic assigned) to a group of students. This assignment satisfies the practice teaching assignment. Students will keep a journal that reflects their teaching assignments as well as an evaluation of other teaching styles demonstrated by peers.
Utilizing video and actual in-pool swimming performance, students evaluate and place students at proper learning levels for Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Butterfly, Breaststroke, Sidestroke, and Elementary Backstroke, according to the criteria from the Stroke Performance Charts.
Students also work together learning to accommodate various disabilities (such as blindness, deafness, paraplegic, quadriplegic) in the "Learn to Swim" environment.

Examples: Students written work will be scored for timely submission, accuracy of facts and scored utilizing the department approved writing rubric.
Student journals will be scored on number of entries, effort and accuracy of progress made toward certifications.
Skill exams are given for each unit. Skills are evaluated individually. Skills are also evaluated by the use of scenarios. Students will score at least 90% on five rescue scenarios specified by the American Red Cross. Two simulation scenarios will involve an active drowning victim. One simulation scenario will involve a passive (non-spinal) victim. Two simulation scenarios will involve spinal victims, one at the surface and one submerged. Students must respond to five scenarios each necessitating a correct rescue response. In addition, the student will score at least 90% on First Aid and CPR skills for Adults, Children, and Infants.
Students will successfully score at least 80% on each of four practice teaching assignments as assigned by the instructor trainer.
Students will score at least 80% on the American Red Cross standardized multiple-choice test for Water Safety Instructor certification (including sections on CPR and First Aid). Students will score at least 80% on the American Red Cross standardized multiple-choice test for Lifeguarding certification.

Instruction through the Course Outline of Record includes approaches to teaching that promote inclusion and engagement with diverse student groups using methods that are inclusive of diverse perspectives, address equity gaps, and are accessible to all students.
