Description
This course will explore logistics systems and concepts, including inventory and warehouse management, logistics information systems, facility location, and global logistics. It is designed for those who are interested in becoming logistics professionals as well as those who wish to update their knowledge in the field.

Student Learning Outcomes:
- 1. Examine the primary elements of the language and theories of international logistics.
- 2. Use creative and critical thinking strategies to solve complex business situations through the application of learned logistics concepts.
- 3. Assess the importance of ethics, social responsibility, and diversity as legitimate international logistics objectives.
Course Objectives:
1. Identify the impact of logistics on the economy and the performance of an organization.
2. Recognize areas in which logistics performance can be improved, especially in the areas of ethics, diversity and social responsibility.
3. Demonstrate the role of logistics in supply chain management.
4. Identify the key steps in the order fulfillment process and demonstrate how effective order management can create value for a firm and its customers.
5. Demonstrate how information technologies support logistics and supply chain integration.

Examples: Lecture is used to introduce new material, review material covered in the textbook, expand on material in the textbook, and present additional ideas and examples to clarify the key concepts of the course.
In addition to a Socratic treatment of the text material, each week the instructor leads a discussion on how the material covered applies to a minicase.
The class uses the Internet and other resources during the semester for webquests, research and the creation of a student PowerPoint-type presentation.
The Port of Long Beach has donated a video which presents an excellent look at the variety of logistics actors in action.
Students work together on their semester projects, creating and presenting a PowerPoint presentation on their design of a new logistics business. Students also work together several times throughout the semester on in-class assignments.
Each spring the students take a tour of the Port of Long Beach to observe logistics principles in action.
Assignment for In and Out of Class

Examples: Each week the students individually write an analysis of a business case that provides the opportunity to apply the materials covered in the text and lecture/discussion. The case is assessed using a rubric. The terms project is to design a new logistics business which addresses an area currently missing in an emerging market. The project and presentation are graded based on a rubric.
Each week, the students are assigned to read material from the text, referenced journal articles and other relevant materials.
Students share the findings of their semester-length group logistics analysis in a 20-30 minute presentation, which is assessed using a rubric.
A semester-length assignment challenges student groups to create a new logistics business and create a professional PowerPoint-type presentation, which is assessed using a rubric.

Examples: Five essay exams are assigned in which a student must demonstrate competency in achieving the course student learning outcomes. Evaluation criteria will be posted in the form of a writing rubric.
The terms project is to design a new logistics business which addresses an area currently missing in an emerging market. The project and presentation are graded based on a rubric.
Written homework and discussion forums are evaluated on how well students identify relevant business issues in various cases, apply the concepts from the course material and support their analysis and recommendations with facts and examples.
Student's are assigned weekly reading from the text and current articles on logistics.
Students are evaluated on their in-class assignments based on their ability to synthesize ideas.
Students will present their new logistics business. The presentation is evaluated based on a rubric.
