The Onion Sword (オニオンソード, Onion Sōdo?) is a recurring sword in the Final Fantasy series. Originally appearing as a special weapon for the Onion Knight class, it has become a recurring powerful weapon, usually one of the strongest weapons available if not the strongest weapon overall, as its stats are oftentimes dependent on the wielder's level. It has also become associated as a weapon of the Onion Knight character created for the Dissidia Final Fantasy series. The Onion Sword is onion equipment.

Etymology
The onion, also known as the bulb onion or common onion, is used as a vegetable and is the most widely cultivated species of the genus Allium.
In a 2020 Famitsu interview with Koichi Ishii and Hiromichi Tanaka about Final Fantasy III, Tanaka stated that he created the term "Onion Knight" after seeing Ishii's character design for the job, likening the shape of its helmet's large, white plume to that of an onion.[1]
Fans had previously speculated that "Onion Knight" refers to the Japanese metaphoric idiom "peeling away one layer at a time and crying all the way" (referring to poverty) or from the slang phrase "to know one's onions" (meaning to be very versatile).
A sword is a blade weapon used primarily for cutting or thrusting. The precise definition of the term varies with the historical epoch or the geographical region under consideration. A sword in the most narrow sense consists of a straight blade with two edges and a hilt. However, in nearly every case, the term may also be used to refer to weapons with a single edge (backsword).
