    Etymology

Mikazuki (三日月) is Japanese for "crescent moon".

The Mikazuki Munechika is a famous nihonto, held as one of the Tenka Goken or Five Great Swords of Japan. Created by Sanjo Kokaji Munechika, one of the first known smiths of nihonto and the founding father of the Yamashiro-den school of the Gokaden, the sword is said to be the most beautiful of the Tenka Goken. The sword gains its name from the numerous uchinoke crescent moon hataraki patterns in the steel that follows parallel to the hamon.
