Etymology
Honebami is a historically famous weapon, created by Toshiro Yoshimitsu of the Awataguchi-den school of Japanese swordsmithing. Originally, the Honebami was a commissioned naginata made at the behest of Minamoto no Yorotomo, the older brother of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and second known Shogun of Japan. Upon coming into the possession of the Ashikaga Shogunate, the naginata was shortened into a sword. Into the Sengoku Jidai, the Honebami soon saw it come into the possession of the Toyotomi Clan under Hideyoshi Toyotomi, and remained with them even into their destruction upon the end of the Battle of Sekigahara and the Battle of Osaka Castle in 1615. Due to the Honebami being damaged by fire, the sword was commissioned by Yasutsugu under Tokugawa Hidetada to be reforged and salvaged as a saiha sword. The weapon gains its name from being infamous for cutting and slicing through bone as if merely "eating" voraciously, and is the only technically known sword of Toshiro Yoshimitsu.
