Doctor Dala is a pre-War scientist operating in the Think Tank in Fallout: New Vegas.
Background[edit]
Doctor Dala specializes in mineralogy and medicinal sciences, serving as the first head chief researcher,[1] a title which she states is indicative of "long-standing quantification of personality and importance".[2] She states that she has earned 211 doctorates in applied science and "techniques to apply those sciences,"[1] as well as degrees in Curiosity and Advanced Curiosity.[1] If asked about how she earned her doctorates, she states that the Think Tank not only explore existing sciences, but also create new ones, adding that "everything can be quantified, categorized, and dissected until every group can be subgrouped or partitioned."[3]
She states that she has become an expert on humanology and "Lobotomite behavior" at Big MT.[1] She has an interest in formography, which is the "excessive examination of the human form to achieve psychological arousal."[1][4] With a Perception of 8, a Speech of 45 or the Cherchez La Femme and Lady Killer perks, the Courier can infer that Dala has more "biological needs" than her colleagues.[5] If the Courier allows Dala to examine them, she states that the biology of Lobotomites "infects [her] thoughts."[6] She also recounts about how she enjoyed breathing once "long ago."[7]

Notes[edit]
- Completing Coming Out of Her Shell will result in her siding with the Courier during the quest Old World Blues.
- If Dala is attacked, she will state, "I cannot believe you would hit a gender-neutral entity such as myself."[8]
- After completing Coming Out of Her Shell, you can return to Dala once a day for a "breather" (letting her watch the Courier breathe) for some ammunition (depleted energy cells) in return.
- If the Courier brings Dala a Teddy Bear, she will decline and explain that Lobotomites are her teddy bears. Her home in Higgs Village and her room at The Think Tank are both filled with teddy bears.
- Dala's Teddy Bear is an unused item found in the game files.
Quotes[edit]
- "I... I did so enjoy breathing once. Long ago."

- "Why, my little bear of teddyness, I am Doctor Dala"

- "Shhh, little organs. Go to sleep in your tanks, Dala loves you."

- "Previous test subjects who have come here have had many questions for us. We answered them with science, fire, and termination."

Appearances[edit]
Dala appears in the Fallout: New Vegas DLC Old World Blues.
Behind the Scenes[edit]
- The option of telling her "The Quick Scribe jumped over the Lazy Paladin" is a line Christine says in Dead Money.[9][10] This is a reference to a pangram.
- Chris Avellone stated that according to Brian Menze, the Think Tank members are depicted (left to right) as Dala, O, Borous, Klein, 8, and Mobius on the Old World Blues Intro slide, with Mobius' appearance designed after Dr. Morbius from Forbidden Planet.[Dev 1]
- In the Obsidian Entertainment forum blog post Old World Questions, Chris Avellone provides information regarding Doctor Dala:[Dev 2]
- Chris saw Dala as a "bizarre botanist, toxicologist, and physician/surgeon," though left these details vague, as the Think Tank "gravitated all over the place" after 200 years.
- Regarding the Think Tank's dislike of formography, he stated that they believe their forms to be the "highest form of evolution," finding stimulation from a "primitive" human brain to be repulsive.
- He stated the Dala is the "only sexually frustrated" member of the Think Tank, with Doctor 8 attending to himself sonically.
Bugs[edit]
It is possible that you won't be able to initiate another "Breathing Session" with Dala after you have already done so once before.

Doctor Dala: "Why, my little bear of teddyness, I am Doctor Dala, first head chief researcher of mineralogy and medicinal sciences. I have 211 doctorates in both applied sciences and techniques to apply those sciences. I also possess a degree in Curiosity and Advanced Curiosity. That is merely schooling, however. When possible, I prefer field work and observation to holotape eidetics. It has proven useful, especially now. I have become the expert on humanology and Lobotomite behavior here at Big MT. My research doesn't descend into formography, it is only Science."
(Doctor Dala/Dialogue#34) - ↑ Courier: "First head chief researcher? Lot of titles."
Doctor Dala: "What is a name without a title or suffix for the sake of hierarchy? It is a long-standing quantification of personality and importance. We could not do without it. Surely you must be aware of the gravity of such attached appellations - just as surely as you must have a title."
(Doctor Dala/Dialogue#42) - ↑ Courier: "211 doctorates? How is that even possible?"
Doctor Dala: "Everything can be quantified, categorized, and dissected until every group can be subgrouped or partitioned."
(Doctor Dala/Dialogue#40) - ↑ Courier: "What's "formography?""
Doctor Dala: "It's excessive examination of the human form to achieve psychological arousal. Disgusting. I would never succumb to such... base appetites. Distractions. Filthy, filthy distractions."
(Doctor Dala/Dialogue#38) - ↑ Courier: "[Cherchez La Femme or Lady Killer] It seems to me you have more... biological needs than your counterparts.
[Speech 45] Oh, I get it - you like "playing" with humans, do you? Watching them move? Blink?
[Perception 8] I can't help but notice your... fascination with the human body."
Doctor Dala: "What? Nonsense."
(Doctor Dala/Dialogue#68) - ↑ Courier: "<Close eyelids, breathe deeply, then stretch languidly.>"
Doctor Dala: "Enough! I am already... intrigued. You have sufficiently... percolated me. I don't know what it is about the biology of Lobotomites. It... it infects my thoughts. All that skin and muscle... and tissue."
(Doctor Dala/Dialogue#81) - ↑ Courier: "Why don't you just give in? There's nothing wrong with looking at the human body."
Doctor Dala: "Perhaps... perhaps there is value in what you say. I... I did so enjoy breathing once. Long ago."
(Doctor Dala/Dialogue#83) - ↑ Doctor Dala: "I cannot believe you would hit a gender-neutral entity such as myself."
(Doctor Dala/Dialogue#169) - ↑ Christine Royce: "The quick... the quick scribe... jumped over the lazy paladin."
(Christine Royce's dialogue) - ↑ Courier: "The quick Scribe jumped over the lazy Paladin?"
Doctor Dala: "Yes, yes, go on. Seeing your... lips and mouth forming the words... both revolting... and somehow... ...how does it feel to have the flesh roll around in your mouth like that? To control each muscle... and the tongue... ...like having a fish, or extremely dexterous slug, lolling and flopping in one's... mouthal cavity."
(Dala's dialogue)
- ↑ Jayalay: "@chrisavellone You know the picture of the pre-lobotomy Think Tank guys? Which one is which? Guessing Klein is old, Mobius bespectacled?"
Chris Avellone: "@Jayalay According to Mr. Menze, the artist: Dala, O, Borous, Klein, 8, Mobius (he purposely looks like Dr. Morbius from Forbidden Planet)."
(Fallout: New Vegas Developer Statements/Old World Blues; Chris Avellone: Think Tank Intro Art, 2011 July 27) - ↑ Chris Avellone: "I always saw Dala as a bizarre botanist, toxicologist, and physician/surgeon, but I left it vague because after a few hundred years, they gravitated all over the place, as evidenced by Dala's insane number of doctorates. As for "formography," the Think Tank believes that being a big brain in a tank is the highest form of evolution, since... well, it's what they are. How could that be anything more than the highest ladder of the evolutionary scale? The fact that ANYONE would be obsessed or achieve any sort of stimulation from regarding a PRIMITIVE human form is just repugnant. Bleh.
And imo, the only sexually frustrated members of the Think Tank is really Dala, 8 attends to himself. Somehow. Sonically."
