11:32 am - still January
Bright sunshine outside, but only 12 degrees. I am...warm and comfortable, albeit with a cat on my chest. I have nothing I have to do today, and even though I feel like I should do something, did I mention the 12 degrees -- without windchill. Which is just altogether wrong when the weather people are telling me the low today is going to be 16. Oy. Tomorrow is supposed to also have sun. It can be for doing things. I deserve a day of nothing after spending all week editing (by which I really mean completely rewriting) a report that we gave to someone else to write because we didn't have time to do it ourselves. Oh yes, brilliant plan, that. In the meantime, the update that I've kept meaning to make: * I am caught up on Bones. And as for this week's episode, if I didn't already think Cam was the best ever, the first five minutes convinced me -- burning IS the only option. * I have gotten several romance books from the library, because I haven't read any in ages and people keep recommending/pointing to recommendations. Turns out that I should stop taking romance books out from the library; no matter how hot the sex or how perfectly good the writing, I have even less patience than before for story tension being caused by people not talking to each other. And I never needed to run into that many people (nine times out of ten, the woman) having some stupid hangup that means "we can never love each other ever, no really, don't try to convince me, woe." Historical and modern, this appears to be a theme. An actual misunderstanding, fine, I'm good, but bullheadedness seems to be the admirable trait of the week. * The LJ app for iPhone/Touch is pretty damn nifty. Probably even better when you don't have a cat on your chest. * Apple can come back to me with a tablet that isn't just a big Touch. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a good device. But it could have been a great one if they'd taken more time and/or stopped holding back on features they are fully capable of providing on more than one device (::waves at the iPhone::). * For the first time in a long time, a BPAL update (Lupercalia, in this case) is tempting me. Everything from it is going to be up for months, though, so I think I'll let people play with them and decide then. Annoying to no longer be in driving distance of a will call location, ah well.

07:50 pm - welcome to my post-vacation mind Leaves! Not many, but leaves changing! So, here be icon change. Woohoo.
Also, slippers. Fuzzy, multi-colored, and on my feet.
Oh, and three of fannish things:
1) VVC folks, or those enabled by VVC folks: are you watching the Varg Veum movies (which I am enjoying greatly, btw)? If yes, have you reached the Fallen Angel one? If yes again, do the subtitles cut out mid-way through? Whether yes or no, help!
2) I'm downloading Bones S1, because barkley + apples + sangria apparently = I need more media (omgwtf).
3) Coffee bean appears to have joined roses, amber, patchoulli, and most musks as a note that will eat every other thing in a BPAL blend, and kill my head in the process. Ow.

11:37 am - la la la, can't heeeear you
SPN did not happen last night, in favor of having non-soapy and -dirty
clothes. Cut tags are everyone's friend!
Since I can't talk about that, I'm going to talk about how much I would cry
if I ever again don't have cable.
Or I could talk about how I can't decide whether BPAL's Fearful Pleasure or
To Autumn is my new favorite scent ever. Bottles of those two will be
happening, oh yes.
Or about how I think it's time to switch out my default icon, even though
the trees haven't quite gotten with the program. Earlier this week, it was
the cool breeze of summer; last night and this morning, it was the cool bite
of fall. Yay.
Or there's the e-mail I got from Netflix, saying, "Come back!" So tempting.
But I have so much backlogged tv already on hand!
Or my afghan that that could be done, but since I'm making it all by myself
for myself, nope, not done yet, it can be biiiiigger.
It's Friday, and I'm ready for this week to be over done gone.

09:29 am - don't need no transitions I have Snow, Glass, Apples! thevaliumsofalj, you have to tell me what part of my soul I owe you! The chapbook of Gaiman's story is gorgeous, and the scent is crisp apples at their finest with a cold, dark thread running through them. And although I've only tried a dab so far, it seems to be an apple that sticks on me, yaaaay.
(For those who have no idea what I'm babbling about, it's BPAL. Perfume. Yes, I'm still playing around there, although not as much as before. Specifically, the first part of this post is the thing that's causing parts of my flist to mean something entirely different when they say "SGA" than it normally means.)
The haircut has happened, and I very much liked the stylist scapeartist pointed me toward. She's more than a bit out of my way, but maybe I can schedule cuts on the way up to or down from NH. :)
The cut itself isn't anything drastic. It's really more of a trim and shaping, because once she heard that I hadn't done anything at all in a while and that I didn't really know what I wanted, the stylist decided we should get more used to each other (and to my hair) before doing any kind of serious change. Which I like, because, yes, SA trusts this woman enough to go in and say, "Do something," but that's after years of her dealing with SA's hair. Now my hair is shorter, but still long enough to put up against the heat, and it looks like there's a cut there, instead of whatever grew out over too many months.
My landlord is going to clear the weeds out of the flower bed that runs along the front of the house, and said that I could do whatever I wanted there. I'll have my first garden!
Oh, and I don't know what to do with the whole Manny situation. This sums up most of the mess I'm thinking. And Bay seems like a good guy, and Manny was clearly having more issues than he'd had before, so, whatever. Trades happen. The season moves on. Shut up, sports media.

07:59 pm - 48 hours My car went just over 400 miles on just under one tank of gas between Friday morning and Saturday afternoon. I love my car.
I also love meeting new fannish folks. Friday was an absolutely lovely night with vaznetti and her BH, coffeeandink, geekturnedvamp, musesfool, and yatzhee63. Like most gatherings, there is no way to cleanly summarize what went on, but I can be succinct on one thing: free baklava and liquor, woot.
Question for the New Yorkers, though: Is it a regular thing, the NYPD doing their best to make it impossible to get into the outbound portions of the Lincoln Tunnel? Eight lanes from three different directions being forced by traffic cones, five cruisers, and two cops into ONE LANE was something to behold, all right.
Friday also included not enough time at the Met, but I did manage to visit Venetians in the Middle East, Greeks and Romans (and a heck of a creepy lineup of disembodied heads) in a far better setting than how they used to live, and a fashion icon of the '20s. And then there were small children rolling down flower-spotted hills in Central Park.
( pics and video below )
Saturday was vidding, Buffy, much taller hills, ambrosia masquerading as black cherry soda, and Spanish sausages and cheese with barkley. Then I headed off to play with BPAL in Hershey, and it's quite heady to have all those bottles at your sniffing and testing disposal. Too heady, perhaps, since I didn't get the chance to sniff or test half of what I meant to.
Anyway, that was the past. In the immediate future, I need to do some poking around at my flist, reading list, whatever one wants to call the thing I haven't really looked at or updated in a while. I need to do that. I don't know what the result will be, but it's not going to happen soon, as I will be in the land of dial-up for a week. Which also means that come July 11, you should expect a "so, what'd I miss?" post, unless I decide not to come back and/or the U.S. changes its mind about this incredibly official print-out that's currently serving as my proof of...damn if I know, because with all the exclamation points, it feels more like a contest submission than an attempt at confirming residency.

03:38 pm - in just under one wire USPS tracking is a good thing, and maybe not so good a thing. Since I'd seen that my local post office received my BPAL order this morning, I about pounced on the mailman when he came today. He didn't even get a chance to put the priority box in our mailbox. Anyway, because the advent of 13 means that the moon will be staying up until tomorrow night, I thought I'd post these now for anyone who was wavering on an order. Quick preview: I think I might get second bottles of both.
( Milk Moon 2007 and Monster Bait: Tokyo Stomp )
...and now to finish my remix. At least I'm in a delightfully scented panic?

09:26 am - more smelly fun I've never been one to go after all the LEs or new scents that the lab puts out, but it's been nice to look at updates lately and not just sigh the sigh of someone who doesn't want to risk playing with any of them. So, some new, some old, some worked, some...well.
( Fire Pig, Carnaval Diabolique, Snow Angel, Delirium, CT3: CCXI, Snow-Flakes, Ides of March 2005, Poisoned Apple, 51, Croquet, The Knave of Hearts, Squirting Cucumber )

12:51 pm - trying to get back into the swing of this thing Sorry for being a bit spammy today, but I want to post this separately from anything else.
I have so many reviews that I didn't post over the last year, but it seems a little silly to backtrack now. These are reviews of recent (i.e., within the last month or so) acquisitions, and I'll post what my BPAL box holds now at the end.
( Asp Viper, Enraged Groundhog Musk, The Oblation, Grr, Milk Moon, Wolf Moon 2004, Antique Lace, Mama-Ji, Spider, Hunger Moon, Bakeneko )
( The current inhabitants of my BPAL box )
Good grief. Look at that. What in the name of all that's ever made me sneeze am I doing with that much perfume oil? And I have more coming, and am contemplating some of the new GCs, and yeeks.

10:14 am - been a while, but you read that tag right It's been forever since I posted any BPAL reviews, although I've been testing scents on and off all the time, but I got most of my Snake Pit decants, and wowee. The important part -- I was totally right about the other notes taming the Snake Oil. \o/
( Australian Copperhead, Boomslang, Coral Snake, Green Tree Viper, Saw-Scaled Viper )
I still have Asp Viper coming, but so far, I'm doing pretty damn good with my picking and choosing among the Snake Pit. Go me.

October 26th, 2006
07:23 pm - no order whatsoever * Yuletide signups, OMG.
* Doctor Who folks, do I need to have seen all the way through Ten's season to watch Torchwood?
* Firefox 2.0 looks funky. (No, I don't know if that's the good or bad kind.)
* I have found my fall apple scent! Not that the majority of you care, but Punkie Night is precisely what I've been looking for since I first thought, "Huh, so...BPAL," and that is a Big Damn Deal to me.
* On a related note, I really wish they'd brought Snow White back. Anyone got any they don't want?
* My VCR no longer tapes on a timer, and I can't get the tape that's in there out of there. Bah, and bah humbug.
* The dog is gone. This is good; Toby-Dog he was not. Sam and I celebrated with the finest tuna and cookies in all the land.
* I almost bought fuzzy knee-high socks with alternating stripes of ORANGEBLACKORANGE today.

11:59 am - Pumpkin Patch + more Couldn't resist. I've been playing with these for the last week and it turns out that for me, the ones that work, WORK.
And does anyone have advice/a favorite method for applying the oil from a 5ml bottle? Someone on the forums mentioned using a toothpick, but that's wood, and that would soak up some of the oil, wouldn't it? Maybe I need swizzle sticks?
( Pumpkin Patch! and Three Witches (still dead, not Resurrected) and frimps )

October 16th, 2005
03:06 pm - erm, yeah, new scents I said there wouldn't be any more BPAL until the Pumpkin Patch order came in, but I found swaps!
( Vice, The Hesperides )
I've also got Lady Macbeth and Madrid coming to me... I guess being in a better mood last week led to wandering the forums.
But to top off this "Wasn't planning this!" post, I'm finally tempted to buy a bottle, even though I've never tested the scent. Because I hadn't been looking, but then voleuse mentioned the Yule update, and ooooh, Gingerbread Poppet: "Warm, cozy gingerbread spiced with nutmeg, clove and cinnamon." So tempted. I mean, knowing what I know now of how my skin works with BPAL, how could that possibly go wrong?
::frets:: If I sell off all of the imps that didn't work/thrill, that'd be just enough. Has anyone tested it? Is it worth going in blind? Would it be easy to get rid of it if the universe hates me and it turns evil?
ETA: Ack, knew I forgot something. Happy birthday, sophia_helix! I hope the weekend improved greatly.

05:55 pm - scents and sundry
scapeartist reminded me that I needed to post this. Last BPAL for a while, I think. Pretty much just waiting (patiently, I promise) for the Pumpkin Patch fun now.
( Verdandi, Akuma, Dana O'Shee )
Beyond BPAL, though:
* I forgot to say this earlier, but if anyone else wants to take a shot at stumping me on my fic, go for it, the offer is still open.
* And since the sun hasn't yet gone down on this day, l'shana tova tikatevu. ::happily munching on apples and honey::

August 29th, 2005
06:11 pm - Monday five, just for variety 1) Well, thank goodness for the temperature change in the water, or whatever gave Katrina that bump to the side.
Weird thought that's been with me all day: Almost exactly a year ago, I was in New Orleans joking with locals about how Ivan had passed by the day before, leaving behind only cleaner streets than normal. That tension of This Is It was still there, though, even then.
2) zombiethon. Go. Sign up. Think of things to gnaw on.
3) Yes, more BPAL. For the record, it's not deliberate that they're both Ts. But wheeee! Two for two, on this one.
( Tempest, Tamora )
( And bonus playthings... )
4) I was looking for something else, but pulled up the link for Gods and Other Beings instead, and...huh. Forgot I'd written that. It certainly wasn't consciously in my mind when I was writing this post on the Ori. Good of my brain to at least keep me consistent.
5) The bunny will come after you if you don't join that community. Don't make him pull out the ninja priate suit.

August 7th, 2005
06:46 pm - yeah, more BPAL Okay, the forum "what the hell does this thing called X smell like?" thread helps. But lookie what I found! I knew someone had to have come up with a consolidated list of what smells smell like. It's not perfect (um, Amber = "smells very good" = not very helpful), and it's not as comprehensive as it could be, but much more than I had to work with before.
Anyway, I didn't expect to test this many, this fast, but I did Rosalind because of curiosity, and then Bewitched and Dorian to satisfy scapeartist's curiosity...and then found myself stuck in a pattern. When something didn't work, more often than not I wanted it OFF ME NOW. And once it was gone, replacing it with a happier scent (i.e., something I didn't want to wash off) was my mission. That, as you can see, took a while.
( Rosalind, Bewitched, Dorian, Queen of Clubs, Cathode, Carnal, Eve, Queen of Sheba )
Oh, btw, how do people keep scents from clashing in whatever you're keeping them in? I don't mean physically (for that I kludged a solution using a dried sponge, a penknife, and a tin), but the scent itself. Because as much as I like Jack, I'd rather it didn't take over the tin.

August 4th, 2005
01:42 pm - BPAL: the first tests First official BPAL post. Woo. This is a batch from one person on the forum, including chosen and freebie imps. Written in the order tested over the last few days, which was random (except for the first).
And I've noticed several people say this around LJ, but they're right: the English language is woefully inadequate for describing scents, or maybe humans are. For scents that I don't know by name, Google wasn't much help with descriptions. The forum reviews were a little better, but most people seem to assume you know smells by name. So I've done the best I can.
( Voodoo, Sudha Segura, Santa Eularia Des Riu, Snake Oil, White Rabbit )
So. One that I wouldn't keep if you paid me. Two that are better off going to someone(s) who can truly appreciate them. And two that I'm going to play around with a bit more before deciding if we're meant to be together for ever and ever. Not bad.
Okay, I lied. A bonus, because another package came last night, and it included the one imp that I've really been waiting for.
( Jack )
