new day

First, is anyone else unable to get into Gmail, or is that just me?

Anyway, tried my first LJ comm swaps the other week. I feel all adventurous. For the occasion: a new icon. The Mucha painting base is courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] troyswann. And for those who didn't see it, [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix has put together a wonderful BPAL newbies FAQ.

([livejournal.com profile] scapeartist, I forgot that I'd swapped for the first one.)

Lolita
Bright, sweet and youthful, but swelling with a poisonous sexuality. Glittering heliotrope, honeysuckle, orange blossom and lemon verbena. (Love Potions)

In the bottle: Heliotrope, apparently, is a floral. I dunno. I get a heaping dose of the honeysuckle and a dash of orange blossom.

Wet: More of the orange blossom, and something else that's probably the lemon verbana. Floral, no doubt of that, but one that's not at all bad.

Drydown: It doesn't really change for the first hour, but than the floral note eases off and it goes mostly sweet and...honeyoragnelemony.

Unfortunately, I don't know if it's the way the floral sticks around or something else, but it's got very good throw and not long after that first hour I go lightheaded, and my throat starts feeling raw. It feels like I'm getting a cold, but I tried this on two days -- several days apart -- and got the same reaction both times, while feeling fine when I didn't have it on. So Lolita gives me a cold. Weird.

SA, I hope it turns out better for you.

Seraglio
In long-ago Arabia, harem girls rubbed an herbal poultice formed from a blend of sensual, luxuriant herbs and oils onto their bodies to prepare themselves for the Sultan's pleasure. This lush, indulgent perfume is based on that ancient formula. Sweet almond and Mysor sandalwood enveloped by a heady veil of Bulgarian Rose, neroli, nutmeg, clove and orange peel. (Love Potions)

In the bottle: Oooh. Almond first, concentrated, like Queen of Sheba, but then the sharp orange peel. And then nutmeg. My mouth is watering.

Wet: More almond. Clove. A litte of the rose, maybe.

Drydown: In the first few minutes, the rose definitely comes to the forefront. Not in a big puff. Then the nutmeg and clove make an appearance again, but it's lost that initial sweetness.

Well, crap. It goes completely to rose about half an hour in. And shortly thereafter I get lightheaded. What the hell? Is it the florals again? That's the only thing the two have in common... At least I didn't get the raw throat, and this was a test on a completely different day than the Lolita, so there wasn't any holdover.

My gmail is working fine at the moment.

Hm. It's the only thing that's not cooperating, which is why I asked, but I guess I'll try restarting the entire computer.

I've been able to get into Gmail, but I'll say this -- it has given me some Java errors, and it has caused Safari to quit suddenly twice today. I'd say something is up with it.

[identity profile] elishavah.livejournal.com 2005-08-23 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
It's been acting funky since last night. Keeps trying to connect, and just won't. I was having the same problem with Google for a while, but then that straightened out.

Guess I'll try clearing out everything again and restarting the computer, but it's the only site that's giving me problems, so I didn't think it was a cache issue or anything...

No worries! I still haven't gotten mine yet. This week though.

Seems that everything I like only lasts about an hour or two before I can't smell it anymore. The scents that make me itch last hours and hours though. Heh. Figures. I'll have to write up my tests someday soon. I've got 2 or three more to go. I've really liked Dirty, Shanghai, and Embalming Fluid, but they just don't last long. I picked up Euphrosyne for my mom because she likes gardenias and it worked awesome for her--she loved it. I had my husband try Villain and it smelled great on him. Me? I think my skin is resistant to anything good smelling. I'm going to keep trying though. Just waiting on this last batch to come in before I start thinking much about swapping again. I haven't had time to really enjoy testing. I'll go check out your wish list incase I get something you want too.

[identity profile] elishavah.livejournal.com 2005-08-23 10:00 am (UTC)(link)
Do the people around you still smell the scents that you like? Because I've seen a number of posts about how some people's bodies get used to certain scents faster than others. Like, your nose and/or brain recognizes quickly that it's "normal," and so it doesn't really register any more, even though the people around you still get it.

I need to update my wishlist. I'm getting a much better idea as I re-test imps I tried at the beginning when I didn't have much to compare it to.

So far, I'd say --

Worked, and wouldn't mind more of:

Jack
March Hare
Queen of Sheba
Samhain
Athens
Port-au-Prince

Ones I've got coming:

Tamora
Tempest
Verdandi
Akuma
(Also some freebie imps of Aveda single notes: vanilla, tangerine, and tangerine/vanilla/clove mix.)

And ones that I know I'd still like to test:

Dana O'Shee
Delirium
Eclipse
Swank
The Hespridies
O
Lady Macbeth

At the same time, since I'm pretty sure that I'm good with imps and don't need bottles, I'm tempted to just sell off the ones I have that didn't work, and try some of the Sweetcakes mixes, too. The Pumpkin Spice; Oatmeal, Milk and Honey; Applejack and Peel; Fall Harvest... Yeah, I'm still looking for that fall scent. *g*

Oh the Lolita works on me quite nicely. I rather smell like a pixie stick, but I have to say it makes me quite happy. Heeee! I don't know that it is "me" but it is fun. Definitely a young scent. And it lasts a good while on me. So far it's been the best scent on me.

[identity profile] elishavah.livejournal.com 2005-08-28 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yay! Isn't it nice to find one that works? :)

Are you planning to buy a bottle, or do you want me to send you my imp so you have more?

[identity profile] scapeartist.livejournal.com 2005-08-29 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
It was nice to get one that worked well. And I appreciate the offer, but you should keep it to trade with. I might buy a bottle after I've gotten all the samples I ordered from the lab. I don't want to place an order for just one bottle of perfume if it's going to take a while to get.

Have you had any more luck with other samples? Traded for anything good lately?

[identity profile] elishavah.livejournal.com 2005-08-29 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Waiting on the bottle makes sense. As for other imps...heh, I just posted.

Gmail is working fine for me on Firefox right now. I think they introduced some new features recently, though, so maybe some browsers might have some problems with that.

[identity profile] elishavah.livejournal.com 2005-08-23 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
Hiiiiiiii!!!!

:)

Well, I'm on Firefox, so that's not it. It started acting up last night. And not just Gmail. Google, too. In fact, any page that has a Google component, like the Google text ads, siezes up. And nothing else is giving me any troubles at all...

::grumbles:: LJ swallowed my comment. It appeared, but now it's gone. Grr. I hope it'll show up later, but in the meantime...

HI!

I know! I kept trying to reply to that comment, and it kept refusing to show up. Aparently, it was just waiting for you to mention it, so that it would show up in a blaze of glory and make this comment feel unnecessary.

Ah, LJ comment politics. So strange. ;)

*hugs you back* When are you coming to Boston again? Fall is coming up! *tries to tempt you*

Do you have the latest Firefox version? I have version 1.0.4 here at work, because I've been too lazy to update it recently, and gmail works fine on it. It might be that the new Firefox version is not compatible with some javascript thing google uses...

(Yay! Finally, an excuse to use my "hug" icon. *g*)
