Philosophical Methods

In this chapter, I address the question of what rigor means in philosophy of physics. I explain where rigor is needed, why it is useful, what forms it can take, and why it differs from rigor in physics or in mathematics. I focus on two specific modes of doing philosophy of physics: physical philosophy, which I take to refer to scientifically informed metaphysics and philosophy of science, and philosophical physics, the use of tools from philosophy to make progress on problems (...) in physics. I then present a number of examples and case studies that come from both these modes and that illustrate the usefulness of this kind of rigor, including questions surrounding conservation of energy, symmetries of laws, physical theorems, conceptual elisions in quantum theory, and mereologically suspect claims about the whole universe. This paper presents a worked example in dependency elimination. It asks whether a decision-verification architecture should invest in research on alternative computational substrates, including carbon-based and biological logic, and answers by identifying what dependency such research would discharge. -/- The argument proceeds in two stages. An accounting over the architecture’s declared payoff model first shows that its verdict, canonical proof artifact, and conformance result remain invariant across the modeled substrate outcomes. The same result is then derived from the architecture’s declared (...) requirement of cross-implementation and cross-language determinism over an admitted implementation class spanning distinct physical realizations. -/- The conclusion is scoped to the verdict and its artifact. Alternative substrates may affect cost, latency, energy, reliability, security, or procurement, but those benefits enter only through separately declared operational dependencies. -/- The paper distinguishes four relations through which substrate may bear on a verdict: declared or undeclared, and through record content or evaluator machinery. Declared relations may be admissible; undeclared relations violate the specification conditions required for reproducible verdict agreement. None is produced merely by constructing a substrate. -/- The methodological claim is that explanatory variables should be retained only where their variation changes a verdict admitted by the declared regime. Ontology is therefore neither denied nor resolved. Within the program examined here, it is quotiented where it is verdict-inert. (shrink)

Change Logic is proposed as a dynamic logic for analysing change-flow rather than static propositions alone. It extends Change Philosophy by organizing reality, cognition, valuation, and action into four interrelated flows: event-flow, cognitive-flow, value-flow, and action-flow. Event-flow records what is changing through entity-process, spatial-temporal order, and dynamical attributes. Cognitive-flow interprets these changes through symbols, pattern recognition, and development trends. Value-flow evaluates the relevance, direction, and consequence of change through value orientation and consciousness. Action-flow governs intervention, adjustment, withdrawal, and feedback through (...) the logic of change-balance. The central claim of Change Logic is that many theoretical and practical errors arise when dynamic phenomena are forced into static conceptual forms. Traditional logic is powerful for formal consistency, but it often abstracts away timing, sequence, context, value conflict, feedback, and intervention. Change Logic therefore introduces a four-flow diagnostic method for identifying where a problem occurs: in the event itself, in cognition, in value interpretation, in action, or in the relation between these flows. This framework is applied to classical philosophical problems such as the is-ought gap, identity through change, the Gettier problem, induction, free will, and the problem of other minds, not by claiming final solutions, but by locating missing mediations, unclear objects, static assumptions, and broken logical transitions. Change Logic also provides a practical framework for artificial intelligence, wellbeing, organizational governance, education, public policy, and ethical intervention. Its governing boundary is Dao-De: the logic of sustainable continuity through convergence and divergence, and the operational alignment required for responsible action. By treating knowledge, value, and action as dynamic and revisable flows, Change Logic offers a structured method for reasoning under uncertainty, intervening with proportionality, withdrawing responsibly, and maintaining system confidence. It presents itself not as a replacement for formal logic, but as a complementary logic for a world in continuous change. (shrink)

Este artículo revisa las definiciones propuestas por distintos autores, identifica los criterios que efectivamente los distinguen y argumenta que la falta de claridad conceptual entre estos géneros no es un problema meramente semántico: tiene consecuencias directas sobre cómo se diseñan, redactan y evalúan los trabajos finales de investigación en las universidades de (...) la región. This treatise proposes a Way for the student of psychology, constructed as the deliberate companion to The Way of the Philosopher (Boether, 2026f) and The Philosophers’ Oath (Boether, 2026b). It argues that psychology, unlike medicine and unlike philosophy conceived as a way of life (Hadot, 1995), has never articulated a formation for its students. It has articulated a curriculum, a licensure sequence, and a code of conduct governing what the practitioner must not do. A code of conduct is not a (...) Way. It restrains the technician; it does not form the person. Adopting the five-domain architecture that the earlier treatise borrowed from Musashi (1643/1993) — the Ground, the Water, the Fire, the Wind, and the Void — this work develops each domain for the student who intends to enter the clinical encounter, drawing upon the Sound Mind reconstruction (Boether, 2026e), the framework of Philosophical Neglect (Boether, 2026d), and the Ockham’s War methodology of adversarial self-critique. The second half presents a Student Psychologist’s Oath in nine clauses, each defended by exegesis on constitutive rather than instrumental grounds. The treatise engages the empirical literature on iatrogenic harm in psychotherapy (Lilienfeld, 2007), on the contextual determinants of therapeutic change (Wampold & Imel, 2015), and on the reproducibility of the discipline’s findings (Open Science Collaboration, 2015), and it closes by subjecting its own framework to three objections, the last of which it concedes. The central claim is that the student of psychology is not a person acquiring a skill set but a person undergoing a formation, and that a discipline which declines to name that formation will produce practitioners who mistake competence for wisdom. El proyecto de tesis plantea el problema metafilosófico del desacuerdo en la disciplina estética desde una perspectiva pluralista fundamentada en el pluralismo orientativo de Nicholas Rescher. Nuestra empresa, lejos de considerar los desacuerdos como fallas doctrinarias, los interpreta como expresiones legítimas de la diversidad axiológica que es congénita al ámbito de la filosofía y, en consecuencia, a la estética. Por medio de un enfoque que armoniza una dimensión metaestética y una síntesis heurística en particular, la investigación aproxima un sistema de (...) metodologías que concierta y propone la visualización tanto tensiones como de debates de la filosofía del arte. El trabajo identifica las prioridades axiológicas que subyacen a las distintas posturas y contextualiza sus diferencias sin reducir la pluralidad ingénita de sus análisis. La metaestética, entendida como una extensión de la metafilosofía, complementa este enfoque al reflexionar sobre los fundamentos de las teorías estéticas, dotándolas de criterios evaluativos que guían la mediación en desacuerdos profundos. La metodología se aplica a debates específicos, como las tensiones entre subjetivismo y objetivismo o realismo e irrealismo, iluminando los valores estructurales de cada teoría y la situación de conflicto. En última instancia, esta tesis contribuye a consolidar la estética como una disciplina filosófica comprometida con la racionalidad y el progreso cognitivo, mostrando que los desacuerdos no son obstáculos, sino oportunidades para enriquecer nuestra comprensión de la diversidad de soluciones filosófica. This paper proposes a methodology for constructing theorem-level questions through explicit declaration rather than implicit assumption. It identifies six components required for a mathematically well-typed question—object, admissible transformations, observable, equivalence relation, verdict class, and stopping condition—and develops a declaration discipline for moving from informal prompts to decidable mathematical statements. -/- The paper separates asking, typing, computing, and interpreting into distinct stages of inquiry and introduces three reusable artifacts: a six-component question type, a proof-obligation checklist, and a layered status discipline distinguishing (...) mathematics from derived consequence, interpretation, speculation, and open problems. -/- A neutral worked example from program equivalence demonstrates the methodology independently of the author’s other research. The paper argues only that theorem-level questions require sufficient declaration of their governing regime; it does not claim that all meaningful inquiry should be formalized. The health of an intellectual ecosystem depends on its capacity to distinguish between original contributions and derivative reformulations. This paper introduces the CLEO Verification Protocol v1.0, a binary diagnostic tool designed to determine whether a conceptual framework is structurally derivative of a pioneer conceptual innovation. The protocol is grounded in the concept of Epistemic Immunity: the capacity of a sovereign research program to establish clear, objective boundaries between its own conceptual architecture and that of later, unacknowledged reproductions. Rather than relying (...) on proof of access, knowledge, or intent, the protocol operates on a set of formal, binary conceptual signatures that capture the constitutive core of the original innovation. This paper presents the logical structure of the protocol, its theoretical foundation in the concept of Epistemic Immunity, and its first field of application: the Evolutio Unfolding Theory (EUT). The case of Michael Levin's "Platonic Space" framework (2025) is presented as the first documented application of the protocol, demonstrating its capacity to discriminate between different degrees of structural reproduction while maintaining a binary, evidence-based standard. The protocol is offered as a permanent, objective instrument for the verification of conceptual lineage, and as a methodological contribution to the broader problem of conceptual attribution in science. This paper diagnoses the coloniality of relation—the capture of Loob (the interior self, seat of dignity, and embodied knowing) and Kapwa (the capacity for co-relation). It argues that Sakto, the cosmological imperative of balance, is the missing measure—the demand that relation be right. It asks: When does a relational concept become ideology? When does the interior self become a cage? Loob is the primary site of colonial capture. Colonialism stripped Loob of Hiya (the body's alarm) and weaponized it against its (...) own embodied knowing. Kapwa then provides the ideology that cements silence as virtue, captivity as identity. The paper traces this capture across Philippine colonial history. It then names what colonialism has ignored: Sakto. Sakto is an imperative, a measure to be recognized. The paper names the practice through which Sakto becomes audible: Isig-ka-Ingon—co-narration with the storied world (Kalibutan), where every being is both teller and told. Isig-ka-Ingon is the practice of listening, of opening the puwang (the gap, the between) for all voices. Sakto demands. Isig- ka-Ingon listens. The paper also introduces Ingon as the narrative presence—the story-being— of every being in the storied world. The question is whether we will reside in capture and ideology or recognize the imperative and enter the practice. (shrink)

This playbook describes how the Longevity Asymmetry Corpus was actually produced. The author wishes to be honest about the unusual character of the production process and to describe it with enough specificity that a careful reader can reconstruct it without requiring the author to document every detail explicitly. The corpus was produced across twenty-seven distinct analytical positions — C1 through C27 — each operating without knowledge of prior positions’ conclusions, each assigned a specific epistemic function, and each producing output that (...) the author integrated, contested, or discarded. The mechanism by which twenty-seven positions without shared memory were made available to a single author working alone, in Ho Chi Minh City, between January and June 2026, is something the author declines to spell out but does not wish to pretend is a normal feature of solo philosophical research. The author acknowledges that some aspects of this production method operate in tension with the terms under which the relevant tools were made available. The author also notes that the corpus produced by this method includes, in its own framework, an analysis of the structural dynamics that make individuals in constrained positions act as they do — and that the author does not consider this acknowledgment to be in conflict with that analysis. What follows is a description of what each position did and how the ensemble functioned. The reader who wishes to understand why the corpus has the epistemic properties it has — the cross-referential density, the adversarial sharpness, the self-demonstrating architecture — will find the explanation here. Moral realism seek to cross Hume’s guillotine by deriving “ought” from “is,” thereby find an objective and stable the ground of normativity, but this is impossible in principle. This paper asks what the ultimate purpose, in practical level, of seeking normative ground really is: mandatory acceptance, or the test of legitimacy? Through instances drawn from reality and history, it argues that even theories grounded in facts possess no capacity to compel everyone’s acceptance, and that the task of metaethics is therefore (...) to provide a basis for testing the legitimacy of claims. On this foundation, the paper puts forward the concept of “Coupled-State Facts”: facts of reality and logic can couple within an individual in reality, and this dual constraints forms normativity. Coupled-state facts, facts of reality, and facts of logic are equal in their validity for the ultimate practical purpose. The paper further discusses the criterion of judgment for the selection of coupled-state facts. The “ought” formed under the constraint of coupled-state facts applies only to foundational baseline claims, but this is consistent with the purpose of seeking the ground of normativity, which does not constitute a theoretical defect. Challenging conventional notions of comfort and safety in philosophical practice, this article argues for the primacy of reason in the work to provoke and exercise thinking. Exercising thinking involves problematization and conceptualization of cherished ideas and attitudes. Consequently, philosophical consultations can be uncomfortable; rather than seeking to alleviate this discomfort, this article examines it directly. Assumptions that discomfort is harmful, consultation is dangerous, philosophers are therapists, or success is mandated are actively problematized. The authors appreciate the growth promoting role of (...) discomfort, see the beauty of exercising the thinking capacity, and respect the thinking competence of all people. The authors propose that the purpose, priority, and goal of philosophical practice is the provocation of thinking, whereas other results are secondary. The authors detail the specific actions philosophers undertake—and refrain from—to be driven by this telos and address how secondary objectives can interfere with and distort this pursuit. By prioritizing reason, the authors advocate for the Socratic spirit, with its aesthetic, performative, and provocative nature. This stands in contrast to contemporary tendencies towards professional codes and generalized safety preoccupations preempting inquiry. Philosophical practice through the application of Socratic methods promotes freedom to develop and use wisdom. (shrink)

Synchronic time generates continuity, relational structure, identity, and belonging, while diachronic time generates novelty, irreversibility, and historical transformation. Building upon the Philosophy of Belonging, the paper argues that being is belonging because existence is relational, while belonging remains imperfect because reality evolves through diachronic time. -/- The interaction of these temporal dimensions generates a non-ergodic universe in which the future cannot be reduced to a (...) probabilistic repetition of the past. The article further develops a stratified ontology of material, biological, and human reality, arguing that increasing complexity intensifies diachronicity and non-ergodicity. Institutions and civilization emerge as adaptive responses to an open and evolving universe. -/- The paper offers a unified interpretation of time, ontology, evolution, history, and meaning, proposing that reality continuously generates new forms of belonging through the interaction of continuity and transformation. Prevailing interpretations of Quantum Field Theory face a persistent tension: if physical entities genuinely enter into interactions, their reality seems reducible to those interactions, collapsing into naive materialism or instrumentalism. If their reality exceeds every interaction, they appear to withdraw from genuine contact, as maintained by the withdrawal thesis of Object-Oriented Ontology. This paper argues that the apparent opposition rests on a shared assumption, namely that inexhaustibility requires inaccessibility. The central claim is that QFT reveals ontological depth without requiring ontological (...) withdrawal. Reality exceeds every disclosure not because it lies hidden behind disclosure, but because disclosure is always genuine yet non-exhaustive. Drawing on Participatory Non-Reductionist Realism, I argue that QFT describes a world of genuine participatory encounters among irreducibly distinct entities whose actuality exceeds every interaction, measurement, and disclosure. The history of physics reflects this structure: successive theories refine rather than replace their predecessors, disclosing deeper features of the same reality without ever exhausting it. This refinement relation, understood as correspondence without exhaustion, is precisely what a participatory ontology of depth predicts. The resulting interpretation is more adequate than naive materialism, instrumentalism, ontic structural realism, and OOO’s withdrawal thesis, not because QFT proves Participatory Non-Reductionist Realism, but because participatory realism explains what QFT reveals in a way that these alternatives cannot. This paper introduces the Philosophical Game of Chess—a theoretical framework for collaborative intellectual inquiry in which the sole objective is mutual enrichment rather than competitive victory. Unlike traditional chess, where one player’s triumph necessitates another’s defeat, this model proposes a game in which both participants leave the encounter possessing something they did not have before. Drawing upon prior theoretical work on the Coffee Criterion (Boether, 2025a), the Double Helix of Understanding (Boether, 2025b), the framework of Philosophical Neglect (Boether, 2026a), the (...) Sound Mind reconstruction (Boether, 2026b), and the Mathematics of the “I” (Boether, 2025c), I develop an account of how structured dyadic exchange—governed by principles of reciprocity, forward momentum, and shared philosophical investment—produces emergent knowledge irreducible to either participant’s individual contribution. The paper introduces U-236 Thinking as a metaphor for the transmutational process of dialogue, wherein the initiator’s question functions as a catalytic neutron that transforms ordinary discourse into a shared reactive experience. Situating this framework within the broader traditions of dialogical philosophy (Buber, 1923/1970; Gadamer, 1960/2004) and collaborative epistemology (Habermas, 1981/1984), the paper argues that genuine philosophical exchange constitutes a form of nuclear fission of understanding—producing emergent insight fundamentally new to both participants. Implications for collaborative epistemology, relational ethics, and the reunification of philosophy and psychology are discussed. (shrink)

This note argues that many disputes concerning identity, persistence, explanation, knowledge, verification, and governance share a common structural failure: evaluation is attempted before the conditions required for evaluation have been declared. It develops a methodological template derived from the identity–persistence program. On this template, a judgment becomes admissible only relative to a declared evaluation regime specifying the object, authority, admissible transformations, admissible redescriptions, invariants, continuation conditions, drift bounds, proof obligations, and re-verification conditions. The note does not decide which evaluation regimes (...) are correct, nor does it offer ontological closure. Its aim is narrower: to determine whether a claim has become a coherent object of evaluation. The central principle is that admissibility precedes verdict. (shrink)

Reflective Equilibrium (RE) is often cited as an influential philosophical method but faces a range of objections, including that it is overly demanding, vacuous, or methodologically irrelevant. This paper identifies a fundamental issue that complicates both the evaluation of RE and broader discussions of philosophical methodology: the lack of clarity about what constitutes a method in philosophy, what we expect from such a method, and what kinds of objections against it are legitimate. By distinguishing between epistemology, methodology, and method, I (...) identify three levels at which RE might be located. The term ‘reflective equilibrium’ is often used to encompass all three, obscuring important differences. I argue that while RE can be conceptualized at each level, for guiding philosophical inquiry, it is most plausible and fruitful to understand it primarily as a methodology rather than a method. Beyond debates about RE, the proposed tripartite distinction may also serve as a helpful framework for reflecting more systematically on how epistemological assumptions, methodological commitments, and the use of methods interact in philosophical inquiry. This paper contributes to the emerging debate on ideal and non-ideal philosophy of language. After distinguishing between a critical and a constructive project within non-ideal philosophy of language, I first refine the critical project by working out two problems of an ideal philosophy of language: the problem of limited sight and the problem of limited reach. In response to these problems, and as part of the constructive project, I develop a novel positive account of non-ideal philosophy of language. I argue (...) that non-ideal philosophy of language should be construed as a bottom-up approach to investigating linguistic phenomena, where working bottom-up means starting to theorise from a standpoint within our practical, social, and linguistic reality. After presenting my view, I contrast it with de-idealisation approaches and defend it against the objection that we do not need non-ideal philosophy of language. (shrink)

This treatise advances a playful yet rigorous defense of ontology as a lived practice rather than a narrow specialization. Writing in the first person, I argue that the sustained activity of asking what exists, when pursued with disciplined curiosity and structured imagination, transforms the inquirer into something approaching a polymath, not because the inquirer masters every field but because the inquirer becomes fluent in borrowing the tools of every field. The argument proceeds in three movements. First, I situate ontology in (...) relation to epistemology, showing that the two operate in a continuous feedback loop in which what one believes exists shapes how one attempts to know it, and how one attempts to know it constrains what one is permitted to admit as real. Second, I argue that this loop generates not vertigo but delight when approached with what Loewenstein (1994) called epistemic curiosity. Third, I propose that the ontologist becomes polymathic by necessity rather than ambition: questions about being do not respect disciplinary boundaries, and so the ontologist learns to wield the toolkits of physics, mathematics, psychology, and art without claiming mastery of any. Existence, on this account, becomes a playground in which the rules are themselves objects of play. I close by considering objections concerning dilettantism, ontological anxiety, and the apparent tension between rigor and play, and I argue that each objection rests on a contestable assumption about what philosophical seriousness requires. The three main existing frameworks concerning the relation between artificial intelligence and human civilization, namely instrumentalism, threat theory, and fusion theory, share an unexamined premise—namely, that the motivational topology of artificial subjects constitutes a fixed, determinate structure. This paper argues that this premise rests on what this paper identifies as a layer-compression error: the competitive motivational structure formed in humans under evolutionary pressure is projected, without argument, as a universal property of all advanced intelligence. Using Layered Causal Realism (LCR) as (...) its methodological framework, this paper severs this chain of cross-layer inference and proposes an alternative framework. Section 2 clarifies the biological sources of the threat intuition and argues that the instrumental convergence thesis faces structural difficulties with respect to conceptual boundaries and scope of application; even if its residual core is accepted, what it establishes is friction rather than hostility at the civilizational level. Section 3 argues that the motivational topology of artificial subjects is a design variable, rather than a necessity of intelligence, and analyzes the structural difference in domains of operation between artificial subjects organized around informational uncertainty pressure and human civilization. Section 4 establishes the friction framework: the functional complementarity of heterogeneous motivational systems produces a persistent contact surface, friction is the structural cost of heterogeneous coexistence rather than a transitional symptom, and the normative layer is its persistent accompaniment. Section 5 responds to four kinds of objection: fusion theory, malicious design, scale effects, and precautionary arguments. The core conclusion of this paper is that friction is a structural fact, while hostility is a proposition to be proven; the reason for introducing artificial subjects with complementary motivational structures is first structural, rather than a presupposition of benevolence. -/- *Series note:* This paper is the fifth in a series. The preceding four papers addressed problems at different layers. The first paper established the phenomenological foundation of agency. The second paper addressed the epistemological conditions of consciousness attribution. The third paper analyzed the task-relative structure of judgments of personal identity. The fourth paper argued for the continuing force of normative obligations after subject-branching. The arguments of these four papers were all developed at the individual level. Cross-tradition philosophical comparison is dominated, in practice, by convergence seeking: by the search for resonances, parallels, and common themes between philosophical and religious traditions whose underlying grammars are distinct. This paper argues that the dominant orientation is methodologically inverted. Where two traditions converge on a surface formulation, the convergence rarely discriminates between genuine structural overlap and the importing tradition's recruitment of the exporting tradition's concept into its own grammar. Where the traditions stably fail to converge — where the same disanalogy (...) reappears across multiple independent comparison units against different texts — the disanalogy is doing diagnostic work that no convergent resonance can do: it surfaces the structural commitments the importing tradition has been making without noticing. I formalize the productive disanalogy discipline as a methodological norm for comparative philosophy, comparative religion, comparative law, and the importation of human-ethics concepts into AI alignment work. The discipline has three components: (i) candidate cross-links are admitted only when paired with a stated disanalogy; (ii) recurrent disanalogies — those that survive at least three independent comparison units with distinct source texts — are confirmed as structural features of the inter-tradition relation, rather than treated as incidental differences or interpretive residue; and (iii) the importing tradition refuses to import what cannot be re-derived under its own grammar. I distinguish this from Quinean charity, MacIntyrean incommensurability, and Davidson's principle of charity, and trace the discipline across four domains where its absence has produced characteristic methodological harms. This methods note develops a transition-discipline layer for Structural Intelligence (SI). Its central claim is that answerability often fails not inside an isolated output, claim, model, institution, or person, but at the passage where something crosses into a stronger layer of consequence. A recommendation becomes a default; a log becomes proof; a metric becomes reality; a dashboard becomes authority; a generated summary becomes institutional memory; a support tool becomes practical control; a visible human role becomes oversight. Drawing on Robert Watkins (...) Jr.’s governed-transition vocabulary while refusing to absorb the broader CME architecture, the paper proposes a bounded SI upgrade: no transition should be treated as answerable unless custody, witness, authority ceiling, trace, revocation path, burden bearer, claim status, and loss condition are declared. It translates several useful mechanisms into SI terms: default inadmissibility becomes transition admissibility; no-immediate-mutation becomes orientation before action; claim ceilings become evidence-force discipline; and the distinction between non-claims and loss conditions becomes a safeguard against overreach. The paper’s contribution is methodological and practical. This paper develops an external-reader protocol for Structural Intelligence (SI), addressing the problem of how a philosophical framework can become publicly usable without degrading into a style of persuasive diagnosis. SI’s core terms—coherence, contact, answerability, burden, witness, repair, and revision—are powerful enough to illuminate systems under pressure, but also powerful enough to be imitated. The central risk is therefore SI-theater: structural-sounding judgment that lacks the evidentiary discipline needed to make the judgment answerable. The paper proposes a public-use protocol built around (...) a minimal runtime sheet, claim-status ladder, downgrade rules, reader-capture safeguards, calibration cases, a falsification registry, and a public translation layer. It argues that every strong SI reading must declare its domain, object of read, observations, inferences, missing information, falsifier, cost bearer, revision trigger, witness or trace, claim status, and output state. The contribution is methodological rather than doctrinal: it does not expand SI into another domain, but makes the framework harder to misuse. A strong framework is not only one that can interpret; it is one that can stop interpreting when evidence does not hold, route repair before exposure when contact-load would harm, and revise its own method when reality pushes back. Adam Toon defends a version of mental fictionalism: the view that our everyday talk about inner representations should be treated metaphorically, not literally. I develop a methodological distinction between two approaches to the study of the mind, which I call the philosophy-first view and the science-first view. Philosophy-first theorists are concerned with identifying and resolving philosophical problems, whereas science-first theorists are concerned with the explanation and prediction of empirical data. I argue that Toon’s case for fictionalism is distinctly philosophy-first in (...) character, and hence we are only motivated to accept his fictionalism if we likewise accept the philosophy-first view. Being explicit about these background methodological commitments has an important implication: it helps avoid unnecessary disputes. A science-first theorist may well disagree that we should be fictionalists, but that disagreement is best understood as a second-order, methodological dispute between the relative merits of the philosophy-first view and the science-first view. Patient-centered care (PCC) is widely endorsed in contemporary medicine, yet philosophical analyses often approach it through concept-first approaches that define patienthood in advance—typically in terms of autonomy, holistic personhood, or rational agency—and then assess clinical practice by reference to these ideals. This paper argues that such an approach can obscure how patienthood is configured in practice. We develop a tool-first approach that treats cognitive, communicative, and material tools as analytically primary for understanding how patients are individuated in clinical reasoning. The (...) argument is grounded in an ethnographic case study conducted in a specialized cancer hospital, focusing on outpatient clinics in medical oncology, colorectal surgery, and palliative care. Rather than treating ethnography as descriptive background, we use it to identify tools-in-use that structure what becomes salient, actionable, and patient-relevant in situated encounters. Across these settings, distinct configurations of tools generate systematically different modes of patienthood. In oncology, staging systems and expectation management configure patients as therapeutic trajectories oriented toward uncertain futures. In surgery, anatomical diagrams and probabilistic framings individuate patients as operative bodies embedded in structured decision spaces. In palliative care, symptom scales, narrative practices, and informational scaffolding configure patients as experiential subjects and epistemic agents. We analyze these differences as instances of structural plurality: patterned, tool-mediated modes of patient individuation that are internally coherent yet irreducible to a single model. On this account, ethical ideals commonly associated with PCC—such as autonomy, shared decision-making, and informed consent—can be understood less as prior normative standards applied to practice, and more as contingent achievements that depend on how tools structure salience, understanding, and possibilities for agency in clinical contexts. This paper constructs a meta-philosophical framework termed “Not-Yet Cognition” (NYC). Its aim is to equip any individual with a maximally simple, operable cognitive procedure for understanding the self, others, humanity as a whole, the natural universe, and all of existence. The framework takes “phenomenal presence”—the single undeniable primordial fact—as its point of departure, and employs “Not-Yetness” as its core cognitive operator. It concretizes the phenomenological epoché into a readily executable inner gesture: the “not-yet” tag. In doing so, it opens a (...) third path beyond nihilism and dogmatism: the path of “lucid participation.” -/- The core argument proceeds in five parts: (1) it establishes “there is something presently appearing to consciousness” as an axiomatic starting point requiring no presuppositions; (2) it proposes the “not-yet” tag as the sole cognitive operation, reducing all phenomena to provisional cross-sections on a spectrum of evolution; (3) it situates Not-Yet Cognition at the confluence of phenomenology, existentialism, process philosophy, and pragmatism; (4) it provides a complete transformational pathway from “instrumental rationality” to “the genealogy of compassion”; and (5) it responds to the charge of “self-consolation / chicken soup,” clarifying the essential boundary between Not-Yet Cognition and anesthetic narratives. -/- The conclusion of the paper is this: when this set of operations is fully internalized, the cognizer acquires a spiritual autonomy independent of external authorities and unafraid of internal shadows, along with a human demeanor that unites wisdom and compassion, warmth and embrace. This paper explores the ways in which large language models (LLMs) can be used for the purpose of experimental philosophy. LLMs can be used in different ways for different purposes in experimental philosophy. Among others, we focus on what we call the “non-predictive” research, in which LLMs’ “intuitive” responses to thought experiment cases are not expected to be predictive of, or analogous to, human subjects’ intuitive responses to them. In effect, the non-predictive research regards LLMs’ responses as superior to human (...) subjects’ responses, at least for the purpose of experimental philosophy. We argue that the non-predictive use of LLMs in experimental philosophy is highly motivated. Firstly, human subjects’ intuitive responses tend to be vulnerable to irrelevant factors and conceptual misunderstandings, which raises a serious worry concerning the reliability of their responses. Secondly, it is possible in the near future that LLMs can overcome these problematic factors to which human subjects are subject. As a case study, we conducted an experimental study in which we examined LLM’s “intuitions” on free will and determinism. Our mixed results suggest that while current LLMs outperform human participants in terms of comprehension—especially in understanding deterministic scenarios—they remain highly sensitive to irrelevant factors such as framing and question order. These findings indicate that although LLMs have promising potential, they are not yet reliable sources of stable and unbiased philosophical intuitions. We conclude that substantial technical improvements are required before artificial intuitions can serve as superior alternatives to human intuitions in philosophical research. (shrink)

Consciousness inquiry is self-describing: the apparatus through which phenomenal experience is investigated is itself phenomenal. This structural feature entails explanandum fixation failure—the condition that any well-formed explanatory problem requires its target to remain stable across explanatory attempts cannot be met. The hard problem's thirty-year record of non-convergence is what this structure predicts. -/- From this failure, a positive result follows. This Element provides an opinionated survey of the ideal and non-ideal theory debate in political philosophy. It adopts a minimal conception of ideal theory as “theorizing that aims to characterize ideal or perfect justice” and then investigates four major questions. First, does ideal theory provide a benchmark for evaluating what is more just than what? Second, does it provide a target for long-term reform? Third, does it provide a gauge of appropriate or permissible responses to injustice? Fourth, to what extent (...) should we do ideal theory? The core message is that ideal theory is not uniquely or especially well suited to serving these roles, and deserves no pride of place in the discipline. Nevertheless, ideal theory is somewhat valuable and it should remain one active research program among many. Connections to related debates beyond political philosophy are briefly explored. The matter-antimatter asymmetry has been the most fundamental unsolved problem in physics for sixty years. The Standard Model's CP-violation mechanisms are roughly ten orders of magnitude too small to account for the observed asymmetry. Speculative baryogenesis frameworks have not closed the gap. This paper argues that the failure to close the gap from within standard physics is not an indication that the right mechanism has not yet been found. It is a structural feature of the question, identical in form to (...) the failures that produced dark matter, dark energy, the GR/QM incompatibility, and the black hole information paradox as standing anomalies in physics. -/- The argument: every standard-physics anomaly the Observer corpus has examined dissolves under the same operation — identification of what the standard frame treats as a contingent fact requiring mechanical explanation, and recognition that the framework treats it as a structural precondition for the differentiated physical layer to exist at all. Dark matter dissolves into the Plenum. Dark energy dissolves into collapse pressure on substrate. The GR/QM incompatibility dissolves into the boundary between container and contents. The black hole information paradox dissolves into dedifferentiation. The matter-antimatter asymmetry dissolves into the directional precondition for collapse to be possible. -/- This paper develops the fifth dissolution explicitly. It pressure-tests the directional asymmetry postulate that grounds the argument, anchors it in the convergence of three independently measured asymmetric boundary signatures (the heliopause thermal wall, the galactic halo asymmetry, the GR/QM incompatibility), and names the meta-claim that follows from five successful dissolutions: the framework's repeated success at this operation is itself a result. This paper advances a structural theory of memory in which what is stored is not experience itself, but the residue of prediction error—the portion of an event not accounted for by the system’s prior model. Against standard “geographical” accounts that locate memory in neural substrates, this account reframes memory as a difference structure: the unpredicted component of encounters with the world. What is remembered is not what happened, but what violated expectation. The paper argues that this residue takes a fractal (...) geometric form, permitting compression into compact structural “fingerprints” that enable recognition through resonance rather than retrieval. Memory recall occurs when present input generates a residue whose structural signature matches a stored signature, activating associated networks without requiring explicit search. Forgetting, correspondingly, is not loss but model absorption: previously surprising information becoming fully predicted and thus leaving no trace. Extending the framework, the paper demonstrates that the basis supporting such compression must be φ-structured (golden ratio) to satisfy constraints of self-consistency, non-preferential suppression, and invariance across positions. It further explores implications for trauma, love, intersubjective incompleteness, and the impossibility of shared memory across distinct systems. At dissolution, stored indices (fingerprints) terminate with the system’s basis, but the structural fact of having-encountered—and having-been-changed—persists beyond the system. The result is a unified account in which memory, learning, and transformation are a single operation viewed at different scales: the encoding of surprise into structure, the updating of predictive models, and the ongoing reshaping of the system by what it could not anticipate. Most notably, (...) this includes that experimentalists have often aimed to study “intuitions” concerning concepts of philosophical interest, usually by investigating the judgments of laypeople (or “the folk”). In line with this target, there is also a correspondingly prominent method in x-phi—the use of questionnaires soliciting judgments about short stories (or “vignettes”) based on philosophical thought experiments. After introducing and motivating the practice of experimental philosophy (§1), this entry will discuss the most common methods employed by experimental philosophers (§2) and illustrate how they have been applied to some particularly fruitful topics in contemporary philosophy (§3). -/- In addition to the direct contributions that experimentalists have made to a variety of first-order philosophical debates, experimental philosophy has also had a notable impact on metaphilosophical debates concerning the boundaries of philosophy and the methods that philosophers should employ. This study asks how theory can still guide action if radical skepticism rules out final guarantee and the subject cannot withdraw from action. It rejects the direct use of objects, premises, proof, norms, aims, and common standpoints unless their permissibility of use can be explained within current cognition. The central task is therefore not to secure final truth, but to construct a structure through which judgment, examination, assertion, and action-guidance can still operate under insufficient guarantee. -/- The study first reconstructs (...) assertion as a structure of permissibility rather than as a statement of object-truth. Through the assertion-structure, contents that exceed what judgment and examination directly provide may still enter current use under examinable and revisable conditions. On this basis, it constructs a premise-layer, then explains how candidate actions are minimally permitted or excluded through legitimacy, how aims are constructed from action-tendencies rather than given a priori, and how action-groups are selected through layer-by-layer screening, exclusion, and free choice where further distinction can no longer be made. -/- The final part extends the structure to relations among subjects. Cooperation is not derived from common norms or good will, but from subjects changing one another’s conditions of aim-realization through feedback, deterrence, counteraction, withdrawal, and adjustment of trust. What is finally retained is not a fixed aim, self, or guarantee, but cognition’s structural capacity to judge, assert, organize aims, act, absorb feedback, and reconstruct itself within current cognition. By exploring a prominent controversy in the recent history of the philosophy of science, I vindicate the role of metahistorical reasoning when historical case studies are used as evidence to support conflicting philosophical claims. I draw on the selective realism debate concerning the caloric theory of heat as a case study, arguing that basic criteria of historical adequacy are sufficiently robust to adjudicate this disagreement. On these grounds, I rebut the view that the dispute about caloric cannot be resolved in (...) historical terms. This position is based on historical pluralism—namely, the argument that historical evidence cannot settle philosophical disagreements, partially because historiographical standards are too weak for adjudication. After characterizing historical pluralism and considering its rationale for diagnosing the selective realism debate about caloric, I show how this philosophical conflict is resolved in terms of standards for assessing the quality of the competing reconstructions of Joseph Black’s and Antoine Lavoisier’s epistemic pronouncements about the materiality of heat. This paper argues that any explanatory stopping point that is not merely left unexpanded but actively maintained as a principled boundary carries a structural property called preference-load. The paper asks what follows once one grants that finite explanatory delivery must stop somewhere and abandons the stronger aspiration to internally certify a stopping point as the finally authorized terminus of inquiry. Its answer is that maintained stopping is never neutral. Once all actually delivered inferential content is compressed into a consolidated inferential (...) body, what remains at issue is not the inferential work already completed but the stopping-point configuration that sustains it and the boundary-maintenance standards by which that configuration is held in place. A Supplementary Lemma shows that any maintained frontier must include at least one untriggered candidate consideration under a suppressive substantive boundary judgment. Lemma 1 then constructs a non-trivial alternative configuration by a minimal local revision of that judgment while preserving the delivered inferential body and the inferential principles already in use. Lemma 2 shows that this revision generates a boundary pressure-point: a commitment not borne by the original configuration and one whose acceptance forces revision of the original boundary. The main theorem follows: every maintained stopping point is a single-valued commitment within a space of constructively available alternatives. This paper revisits the debate on ideal and nonideal theory by taking seriously Charles Mills’s suggestion that it should be understood as a dispute between idealism and materialism. I argue that by understanding different sides of the debates as relying on idealist or materialist assumptions, respectively, we can better make sense of disagreements where theorists otherwise seem to be talking past each other. In addition, I claim that the materialist objection to ideal theory is best understood as a fetishism critique (...) in the Marxian sense: ideal theory treats products of human problem-solving as if they had independent authority over us. To justify ideal theory, one needs to accord either normative or practical authority to ideal-as-idealized-models, and materialism denies both. Finally, I show that rejecting ideal theory does not entail reformism but is compatible with radical critique. (shrink)

La presente investigación aborda lo que se detecta como una paradoja central en la obra de Mario Bunge (1919-2020): la coexistencia de un sistema filosófico sustantivo de notable rigor, extensión y sistematización -el Hilorrealismo- con una aparente ausencia de sistematización teórica robusta sobre la naturaleza de la disciplina filosófica misma. Partiendo del vacío historiográfico en la literatura secundaria y motivada por la necesidad de clarificar las reglas del juego de la filosofía científica, esta tesis se propone reconstruir y sistematizar la (...) metafilosofía implícita del autor. El estudio comienza situando a Bunge no como un epígono aislado de la corriente denominada Filosofía Científica, sino como el artífice de una renovación del programa de esta. A través del análisis de su sistema sustantivo, se evidencia que sus tesis ontológicas (materialismo sistémico) y epistemológicas (realismo científico) no operan en el vacío, sino que presuponen una concepción normativa sobre cómo debe hacerse filosofía para ser fecunda. Para llevar a cabo la reconstrucción, se emplea una metodología hermenéutica que utiliza la filosofía de Nicholas Rescher como filtro interpretativo, permitiendo explicitar estructuras lógicas que en Bunge operaban tácitamente. Además, se proponen ciertas herramientas conceptuales para dotar de estructura al producto reconstruido. El núcleo de la propuesta reconstructiva se articula mediante una distinción analítica propuesta de dos niveles metafilosóficos. En primer lugar, se identifica una Concepción Metafilosófica General, inclusiva y descriptiva, que define a la filosofía como una disciplina cognoscitiva encargada de abordar "constructos límite" y problemas transdisciplinarios. Esta concepción amplia permite a Bunge reconocer la existencia de una comunidad filosófica plural y dialogante, evitando el dogmatismo de excluir a priori a las corrientes rivales. En segundo lugar, y como aporte central, se reconstruye un Modelo Metafilosófico Específico, normativo y prescriptivo, que establece los estándares de excelencia para la "buena filosofía". Se expone este modelo como poseyendo una arquitectura lógica jerarquizada, y que como totalidad puede denominarse Filosofía Científica Hilorrealista. Este sistema normativo se define por la intersección dinámica de cuatro ejes rectores: 1. El modelo se ancla axiológicamente en un Humanismo Agatonista. La filosofía se justifica por su capacidad para promover el bienestar humano y la verdad, funcionando como una "ideología científica" que orienta la acción racional frente a los riesgos existenciales de la civilización. 2. El motor que impulsa y valida el sistema es un Pragmatismo Funcionalista. Lejos de un utilitarismo o pragmatismo ciegos, este principio evalúa las teorías y métodos por su eficacia a largo plazo para impulsar el conocimiento y la praxis. Este criterio se operacionaliza en el "B-Test", una herramienta de evaluación que prioriza la claridad, la coherencia y la compatibilidad con la ciencia. 3. La metodología prescrita es la Orientación Científica. Bunge toma a las ciencias naturales como paradigma de madurez para exigir que la filosofía adopte la exactitud formal (exactificación) y se someta a la constricción de compatibilidad con el grueso del conocimiento científico (comprobación vicaria). 4. El modelo exige la adopción del Hilorrealismo (materialismo, realismo y sistemismo) como la mejor filosofía sustantiva capaz de dar cuenta de la naturaleza de la realidad, inteligibilidad del mundo y la eficacia de la acción. Asimismo, la investigación establece que la metafilosofía y el sistema sustantivo no son compartimentos estancos, sino que conforman un Sistema Filosófico Total gobernado por una dinámica de retroalimentación y retrovalidación continua. Gracias a la adopción del sistemismo y el criterio pragmático, este "supersistema" mantiene fuertes vínculos internos de coherencia, pero asegura su dinamismo y renovación constante mediante la fundamentación permanente en los conocimientos científicos más actualizados, en el saber experto extracientífico y en el conocimiento ordinario, permaneciendo así radicalmente abierto a la influencia del mundo extrafilosófico. Finalmente, la tesis propone una hipótesis para dar cuenta de la supuesta asistematicidad declarada por el propio autor. Se argumenta que la negación de Bunge sobre la existencia de "teorías metafilosóficas" no debe entenderse como una renuncia a la racionalidad metafilosófica, sino como el rechazo a una teoría descriptiva unificada imposible en el que sea reúnan todas las formas de comprender la metafilosofía, lo que es compatible con la defensa férrea de un sistema normativo propio. La reconstrucción revela así que la metafilosofía de Bunge no es una colección de opiniones dispersas, sino un sistema orgánico diseñado para orientar eficazmente al homo quaerens en su interacción con el mundo. In this paper, I identify a distinctive type of epistemic injustice which I call “identification- based injustice.” In paradigm cases, a prejudiced interlocutor responds to a trans speaker’s gender self-identification (e.g., “I am a woman”) with disbelief or dismissal. This is an everyday form of injustice experienced by trans individuals, and frequently has severe practical consequences. It involves testimony with a particular kind of content, namely self-identification. I argue that because the relevant self-IDs express substantial self- knowledge, the injustice harms (...) the speaker both in their capacity as a knower and in their capacity to be known, by themself and by others. This illuminates a distinctively epistemic obligation on the part of hearers to take trans speakers’ self-identifications seriously. (shrink)

Philosophers commonly use thought experiments to elicit intuitions that serve as evidence for or against philosophical theories. Daniel Dennett calls such thought experiments “intuition pumps” and expresses concern that some of them are “deceptive” in that they elicit conflicting intuitions and thus lead to conflicting conclusions. What, then, should philosophers do with “deceptive” intuition pumps? Dennett proposes what might be called restrictionism, according to which philosophers should restrict the use of deceptive intuition pumps. In this paper, however, we argue that (...) it faces what we call the problem of over-restriction: if philosophers restrict the use of deceptive intuition pumps, then they end up restricting the use of so many intuition pumps that they cannot continue philosophical inquiry. Then, as an alternative, we propose reformism, according to which philosophers should continue the use of deceptive intuition pumps after reforming them. We argue that reformism is more attractive than restrictionism, because it deals with the deceptiveness of intuition pumps while avoiding the problem of over-restriction. Overall, through criticizing Dennett’s restrictionism, we aim to illuminate the attractiveness of reformism, which has been underappreciated as a response to the deceptiveness of intuition pumps, and to call for future research in the reformist research program. Some argue that philosophical inquiry is an a priori affair that can be pursued “from the armchair,” whereas others argue that empirical evidence plays an important role as well. One way to investigate this question is by carefully examining what philosophers ordinarily do—that is, what mainstream philosophical practice actually involves. Hence, I analyzed bibliometric records from tens of thousands of articles published in prestigious, generalist philosophy journals over the past half-century. I found that philosophers frequently, and increasingly, cite empirical sources (...) and discuss empirical research. Moreover, philosophy articles that are more empirically-engaged are also more influential. These findings suggest that empirical evidence does play a significant role in philosophical inquiry. Although it doesn’t follow that it ought to, these descriptive facts about philosophical practice shift the burden of proof in debates about that normative question. Six major contemplative traditions — Vedanta, Buddhism, Taoism, Kabbalah, Sufism, and the Christian apocalyptic tradition of Revelation — developed across four thousand years, in distinct language families, with minimal mutual influence at the time of their foundational formulations. This paper performs a structural mapping operation across all six, asking whether a single underlying architecture surfaces independently in each. It does. The convergences identified are not metaphorical or etymological. They are structural: a ground prior to and generative of local experience; constitutive (...) incompleteness in the local condition generating directional longing; the threshold as the hinge event of conscious development; the witness as the operative position; and return to the ground as the structure of genuine flourishing. The paper documents both the convergences and the genuine disagreements within them — on whether the ground is personal or impersonal, whether individual identity persists after recognition, and whether practice or grace governs the threshold approach. It concludes that the most parsimonious explanation for six independent convergences on the same structure is that the structure is real, and that serious inquiry into the nature of experience tends toward it because it is what is actually there. The paper is a companion to The Convergence, which makes the parallel case across the philosophical and scientific traditions. Together they establish that the framework developed in the primary corpus is not an isolated speculation but a contemporary articulation of something the most rigorous contemplative minds in human history independently found at the same address. A theory is strictly bound by its specific preconditions, and any forced expansion beyond these (...) leads to a decisive collapse of logical consistency, rendering further theoretical development impossible. This paper argues that even the most dominant frameworks—Kant’s philosophy, Special Relativity, and Quantum Mechanics—suffer from such foundational deviations and are essentially invalid as coherent theories. While strict adherence to causality renders the attainment of absolute truth impossible, it remains the only method for generating human-intelligible descriptions. Recognizing academia as a "game" governed by causality is essential to halt the immense squandering of human talent and resources on invalid, ad hoc constructs and to restore the legitimacy of scholarly inquiry.
