Sir Paul McCartney sang a lot of the back catalog last night (7/7/17) in Miami, FL.  Someone shot video, and until that account gets suspended, you can start here and work your way through the various songs.

Not bad for a septuagenarian.
onyxlynx: Blue bkgrd, large red 7th, words "decade of fabulous." (As in "I'm in my 7th decade of fabulousn)
Because I have spent the last two days hunting down an obscure Henry Mancini tune.  (Along the way, I got to see Charade again.  I never tire of Cary Grant.)  The one clue I had was what it sounded like, which meant I got to listen to a lot of atmospheric orchestral pieces that were not what I wanted, though evocative of different memories.  I cut the strings with WatchMojo's Top Tens (speaking of time sinks) and the occasional Fleetwood Mac, and finally--finally--found the right number.

It's called "Floating Pad."  It's on "Mr. Lucky and Mr. Lucky Goes Latin."  (We probably had "Mr. Lucky Goes Latin" because Dad bought several Latin or Latin-flavored albums in the early '60s.)  You probably won't like it.

I thought I traditionally posted a link to the video of Jimi Hendrix doing the "Star Spangled Banner" at Woodstock (the 1969 one) to celebrate July 4 (US Independence Day), but apparently I last did that in 2010, and that link expired in the meantime. So.

Yes, it is fuzzy. (Less fuzzy but shortened version with Jimi Hendrix in conversation with Dick Cavett.)

Link to a video interview with Dr. Fayard Nicholas on YouTube, with others linked on the page.  (Bonus video.)  Because I spent too much time on Wikipedia this morning running down something on 1914 from an article I can't find anymore.

  • From Sociological Images, the first African-American flight attendants. (Glamour, yes, but you also, at least according to the stories that played up the glamour, had to be a trained nurse. And short.)
Patricia Banks was one of the first Black women to sue an airline for racial discrimination. She graduated from flight attendant training school at the top of her class and applied to several airlines. But it was 1956 and the U.S. airlines had never hired a Black woman. After 10 months of trying, an airline recruiter pulled her aside and admitted that it was because of her race. Which, of course, it was; airlines disqualified any applicants that had broad noses, full lips, coarse hair, or a “hook nose” (to weed out Jews).

Banks sued. After four years of litigation, Capital Airlines was forced to hire her. She postponed her marriage and took the job (airlines only hired single women as flight attendants).
  • Twenty minutes of interview with Eddie Izzard.  (Video)

FunnyorDie.com has this video; I have not seen the movie it parodies, but it was chuckleworthy.

As I mentioned a few days ago, I've been wallowing in Motown (on YouTube), and accidentally stumbled upon ... wait for it ... The T.A.M.I. Show.

(Video.  Which is probably not going to be there long.)

It's basically a filmed concert with dancers and with the boring parts edited out.  A lot of the performers are dead now.  But if you want to see prime James Brown just go straight to 1:17:30.  The Supremes, Lesley Gore, Chuck Berry, the Rolling Stones.  And Marvin.  And Smokey.  And Jan and Dean before the accident.

You could do worse.

 An interesting election video

Because you've already seen it, but I found out about it from Making Light and was perplexed until 20 seconds in.

Hee Hee!

I am not sure why I don't mostly post stuff that turns up in feeds--perhaps I suspect you have the same feeds, or occasionally investigate my Reading page, or have already seen the items.

The squib at the Hathor Legacy caught my attention, though, and it is in fact Fry and Laurie, whom I've heard of but never actually seen together.

Nina Simone for your delectation.  (Not her birthday nor the anniversary of her death.  No special reason.  Stolen from Borrowed from Echidne of the Snakes.)

A video with animals and a man sitting still. It's an open thread on a political blog I occasionally see links to. I was entirely coincidentally pointed there by G., whom I haven't actually seen in years.

Which was, of course, "Giants Win the Series! Giants Win the Series!"

Ahem.

KFOG just played Michael Franti filking his hit (the one with "I love You, baby girl.") in honor of the Giants, and now they're playing "Don't Stop Believing." (They're not admitting to that last, of course.)

And New York would like to name a street after Willie Mays, but he's still alive.

And Monte Irvin got, I hope, to see it. (Link to a Leah Garchick column.)

I don't know how to do the sparklies yet so just let me say here:
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-HOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Edited to insert link to "Say Hey (I Love You)-Giants Version" for your entertainment.

I've got 6 tabs open and a response that's mulling (well, it's hot and has cinnamon and cloves...) and a sewing project that is standing in doorways with its finger crooked at me and a beautiful day with the traditional come-hither gleam in its eye. So...
  • My former neighbor, training to be a New York subway rider on the Tokyo train.
I decide to make a beeline for the open doors in the car. I struggle to push my way about halfway to the door squeezing past people, much to their chagrin. I am stopped in my tracks by a salaryman who refuses to move.
  • Top 5 Beatles songs from 1963. With, at the moment, videos.
  • Via Mills River Progressive, Joe Bageant writes about politics and philosophy. Warning: May be too serious for the weekend.
  • "She said, cryptically, 'Your talk was not about disabiltiies, didn't you know that?'" (Also, the comments so far won't make you squirm.)
  • I have to explain for this one that I don't exactly like Lady Gaga. It's probably the shoes. I tend to go, "interesting stuff in the video, canny use of framing, dance, cinematography, and pop culture" and click on something else a minute and a half later. Not my thing. This video, however, was sufficiently hilarious that it got me to:
    1. actually listen to the song;
    2. sit through the Lady Gaga video. Yeah. SF tropes. Still not my thing.

So I spent some time collecting vitamin D at a day game (cheap seats).  My team actually won for once, so I got to contemplate the question of the rarity of liquid chocolate malts (frozen chocolate malts you can always get, but the classic thick liquid chocolate malt?  I'll have to check Fenton's, but otherwise?)  And I should note that I was the weirdo who ordered the vanilla malt because I only like chocolate in certain forms.  It's the principle of the thing.
