Edith Windsor,
Ultimately, the opinion in Windsor's case became the basis for a wave of federal court rulings that struck down state marriage bans and led to a 2015 Supreme Court ruling giving same-sex couples the right to marry from coast to coast.

  • Barbara Hale, actress (last surviving regular, Perry Mason)
  • John Hurt, actor
  • Judge William Norris, appeals court judge
Citing Watkins’ exemplary military record, and observing that “sexual orientation plainly has no relevance to a person’s ability to perform or contribute to society,” Mr. Norris said the constitutional guarantee of equal protection “does not permit notions of majoritarian morality to serve as compelling justification” for such discriminatory laws.
  • Sarah Prince, fan (Item 6).  We were in several apas together.  I last saw her 20+ years ago, visiting her in Keene Valley, NY where she had a house being renovated (that project was completed around 2009).  It was beautiful.  Naturally, I failed to bring my camera.

Supreme Court.  5-4.  Same-sex Marriage is legal in all 50 states.

Excuse me while I jump up and down with glee (not Glee) and joy amd thanksgiving to the Lord.  The Pride parade is going to be especially ecstatic this year.

Ireland votes in favor of marriage equality by a landslide.

There's still the enacting it into law part, but what a wonderful message the Irish have just sent the world!

There is probably a shorter name for the "Famous Parent (usually Mother) Messed (fsvo "Messed") Up My Life" publishing genre; the examples I can think of off the top of my head are Mommie Dearest, about Joan Crawford, and the essays by Rebecca West's and H. G. Wells' son Anthony, Anne Roiphe's daughter Katie, Bette Davis' daughter B. D., and Brooke Hayward (Haywire). (Michael Joseph "Prince" Jackson Jr.'s book, if he writes one, is going to be interesting.)

Feminists' daughters who veer politically rightward (like Katie Roiphe) may allow conservatives to feel validated (although statistically, it's bound to happen; there is that rebellion period in adolescence; there are changed generational circumstances; there's propaganda). So it is that a daughter of lesbian mothers decries gay marriage because she missed having a father figure. (This is complicated by the fact that, as she also says,
My dad wasn’t a great guy, and after she left him he didn’t bother coming around anymore.
Or as one might say, Issues.)

There is no such thing as the Perfect Parent, and even if there were, there are children who would find that situation painful.

  •  So this year I got to the Garden of Memory around 8, when apparently the early birds go home, which meant that I could actually navigate the place without Lexington Avenue Express rush hour levels of crowd.  I got to play a theremin for a few minutes (I want one now, and they're probably not in mass production, drat), and took part in the Cornelius Cardew Choir (heart's voice is still off-key).  I did not take my camera this year, and I did not run into anyone I knew (this is your cue to tell me you did so see me, and what's with the scuttling?).  There was a tabla player with a sitarist (I think) who kept changing up rhythms, which was interesting, and then the singer…I am probably the only person who remembers Tyrannosaurus Rex.  Tyrannosaurus Rex eventually morphed into T-Rex and did "Bang A Gong" but in their original form, they produced quasi-Indian song-like objects.  When the singer got going he sounded more like Marc Bohan than anyone else.  I think there were fewer musicians this year.

State Supreme Court in California put stake through Prop 8.

(And I suppose that means that the celebrity couple who swore not to marry until everyone could marry now have to marry.  As if I care.)

Further legal activity related to this story:  a federal judge in Ohio has ruled that the marriage must be recognized in Ohio.  (Thanks to Zandar Versus The Stupid.)  It's mostly for the dying spouse's death certificate.  Nevertheless.

(Apparently I forgot to crosspost last time.  Rectified.)

Well, last year there was a study supposedly indicating that children in same-sex households exhibit behavior problems (here is a link to my post which has links to relevant material), which study turned out to be deeply flawed. Evelyn Schlatter of the Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Report interviewed Dr. Darren Sherkat, who investigated how the study came to be published.
Regnerus admits that just two of his respondents were actually raised by a same-sex couple, though I doubt that he can even know that, given his limited data. Since only two respondents were actually raised in gay or lesbian households, this study has absolutely nothing to say about gay parenting outcomes. Indeed, because it is a non-random sample, this study has nothing to say about anything.

I don't think that's how conservatives want their children to turn out.

Intrigue and faction:

It was reported on Thursday that Manning had been chosen by the San Francisco LGBT Pride Celebration Committee as one of several grand marshals for the June 29-30 event, something San Francisco Pride Board President Lisa Williams said in a statement Friday was a "mistake and never should have happened."

So that's debunked.

Comrade Misfit also noticed the rush to lift sequestration from air travel, so the furloughed air traffic controllers can get back to work and Congresspeople don't get inconvenienced when they fly home.

Jim Nabors married his partner in Seattle.

Back in the '70s? there were rumors, but they kind of died out.  The entire legacy of the character he played is the phrase "Surprise, surprise, surprise!" and probably no one born after 1980 who wasn't glued to Nickelodeon recognizes it.  (Do I mean Nickelodeon there or Nick at Night?)

When I say "there were rumors," I mean supposedly he was hanging out too much with another well-known actor, and I can't remember who that was.

I'll bet the sneerers on the gossip shows are having a field day, assuming they remember.

Congrats, Mr. Nabors.  38 years is a long time.  May you both have another 38 years together.

[ETA:  [personal profile] j_crew_guy  used a better source, Hawaii News Now, and supplied the name of the actor:  Rock Hudson.]

Mark Regnerus (could his name be coincidental?) published the findings of a study on children of parents who've had same-sex relationships. (Link is to the published article at ScienceDirect.com; original publication in Social Science Research, July 2012, 41:4, pp.752-770.) He also has a follow-up article in Slate in which he pushes his conclusions hard.

Jed Hartman disputes the context:

Furthermore, the discussion about this child-raising issue presents a false dichotomy. It suggests that a given child has two choices: to be raised by their biological parents (who are married to each other), or to be raised by a same-sex couple.
In actual reality, those are very rarely the choices. In most cases where there's a child who's about to be raised by a same-sex couple, the chance of that kid being raised by married bio-parents is extremely low. If you want to make the outcome for that kid as good as it can be, and your options are to demonize the parents or support them, which one do you think is better for that particular kid?
PhoenixWoman disputes the definition of "same-sex relationships" (see the headline for the not-correct blooper).

When William Saletan (also in Slate) pokes at your methodology, your study design is pretty flawed. (See Box Turtle Bulletin for serious critique.)

  • All-time worst sports collapses (in which the Braves do get mentioned).
  • A Red Sox fan Goes On About It with history and some stats.
This will just prove to be the latest in a series of dynasty-destroying disasters that will prove more costly than not signing Pudge Fisk after 1980 (who responded by slugging 214 of his 376 home runs for the White Sox), trading Bill Lee to Montreal for Stan Papi during the 78-79 offseason (Lee responded by winning 16 games for the Expos that year, posting a 3.04 ERA), releasing Roger Clemens (who responded by winning back to back Cy Youngs for the other Canadian team, the Blue Jays), letting Wade Boggs go (who responded with the first of four consecutive .300+ seasons for the hated Yankees) and, of course, selling Babe Ruth to the Yankees.
Because, as you know, I can't resist this sort of thing.

Sorta.

During the Republican "debate" recently, Mr. Frothy-Mix-of-Lube-and-Fecal-Matter managed to disrespect a serving soldier.  (It's on various easily-found video clips.)

Since what I think of that would make a Scotch Bonnet taste like a cucumber, have the opinion of Mr. Peter Catapano at the Opinionator blog of the New York Times, who quotes from others (the Los Angeles Times, Andrew Sullivan, and William Kristol).
