musesfool: bucky/natasha, naked (you're the only one who understands)
I slept for nearly nine hours last night, and I am still as tired and bleary-eyed as on Monday, when I'd only slept four, and I so don't want to do any work. Ugh.

*

on [personal profile] bethbethbeth's recommendation, I recently read The Company We Keep by Robert and Dayna Baer, a memoir of their time in the CIA. The first half is really interesting, dealing with CIA training and actual spycraft; the second half basically made me side-eye them - especially him - the whole time, especially the part about their foreign adoption (and also, the fact that he has two daughters and the son, and guess which kid is apparently the only one he cares about, since he's the only one who gets a name and a part in the story?). So read it for the first half and then roll your eyes through the second, I guess, or stop when they leave the CIA.

I also read Blood Spirits by Sherwood Smith, the sequel to Coronets and Steel. I liked it, though not as much as the first book, which has that whole Prisoner of Zenda plot going for it. I had some trouble remembering how people were related for the first part of the book, and also, spoilers )

And then apparently yesterday, all of the comics I actually pay for were released, so let's do that rundown:

Avenging Spider-man 11 made me sob, but that is a given, I think, since he was teamed up with Aunt May in this issue, which basically covers a trip to the cemetery to see Uncle Ben. I thought it handled the idea of reassessing how you got where you are while still looking forward pretty well, but you know, I am easy for Peter and May Parker and their strength and resilience. I didn't love the art, but eh.

Journey Into Mystery 642 - this was kind of heartbreaking - apparently no matter what Loki does, it all goes to shit, even when his intentions are noble. The best part is how much Thor loves him (see this tumblr post about their relationship, which basically encapsulates my kid!Loki feels and also why Thor is awesome. Spoilers, obv.)

I know they're wrapping up kid!Loki's time as the protag of this book (soon it will be Sif!) and kid!Loki will be hanging out with Billy Kaplan? (Or something? Nerds of the Nine Realms unite?) and I really hope they don't just drop him or re-age him to adulthood and villain status, because I really like what they're doing with him. Because a trickster should straddle the line between good and evil, playing them off against each other for his own benefit and/or amusement, and there's as much creation in trickster mythology as there is destruction, because you don't get one without the other, and Loki as straight up villain is just boring.

Captain Marvel 3 - this is where my irritation with serialized storytelling is at its peak, because goddammit, GIVE ME THE REST OF THE STORY. I don't feel like the cliffhanger was particularly effective and I don't feel like there was enough story here to be considered a full issue. I liked the part where spoiler )

Otoh, the serialization aspect worked for me with Winter Soldier 9 because spoilers, no I really mean it )

So that was pretty freaking awesome.

And you've all heard about the SHIELD tv show Joss is producing for ABC, right? Given the corporate synergy there, hopefully it won't get cancelled after five episodes. I still would have preferred a Heroes for Hire show, but maybe this will be about Maria Hill being a BAMF.

But maybe you don't know - I didn't, until [personal profile] devildoll just told me - that Avengers is being re-released over this Labor Day weekend in the US, and that there is a specific reminder to stay through the credits so... footage from IM3? Another short? I guess we'll find out! I'll be out on the island this weekend so I don't know that I'll have a chance to go again, but maybe I can talk the kids into it. Hmm...

musesfool: ultimate spider-man (what a good boy)
So I read some comics this week.

Let's get the RAGE POST out of the way first.

I have been enjoying Miles Morales' story in Ultimate Spider-man. He's a wee adorable middle-schooler who shouldn't have to deal with the problems being a superhero - let alone being Spider-man, in the shadow of Peter Parker's tragic death - brings, but he's trying to handle it as best he can, with an assist from his best friend Ganke (and Nick Fury, and in the highly entertaining crossover with 616!Spider-man, with grown up Peter Parker himself). And then we have issue 13. Please believe me when I say it is not Miles at whom I feel the FIERY RAGE OF A MILLION SUPERNOVAE. Er, if you like Ultimate Captain America, please do not click on the cut.

featuring CAPSLOCK OF RAGE. and also SPOILERS. )

Whew. Okay, I feel a little better.

I also read the new Hawkeye and spoilers? )

Speaking of Kate Bishop, after watching Teen Wolf, Crystal Reed could TOTALLY be Kate if they made a live-action Young Avengers, and Sinqua Wells could be Eli. I would be totally okay with that. (Also, Tyler Posey for Jaime Reyes? Y/Y? Maybe when he gets a little better at acting?)

And there was also Avenging Spider-man #10, concluding his team up with Captain Marvel. spoilers ) Next time, he teams up with AUNT MAY, who is surely the biggest damn hero in the Marvelverse. ♥ I am definitely purchasing that one, too.

When is the next Spider-men coming out? And also, the Amazing Spider-man 50th Anniversary issue? I know they are putting out a Spidey book each week in August, but I'm not sure I want to buy all of them.

musesfool: Steve & Thor (valhalla i am coming!)
Ugh, work today was stupidly, unexpectedly busy, meaning I had no time to write, so I still don't know what I'm doing for my birthday story. I know all y'all don't care, so I shouldn't fuss about it, but I like to post a story on my birthday. Sigh. there's still time.

In other news, I did in fact like A Week to Be Wicked more than I liked A Night to Surrender, and after reading the excerpt, I feel like the third book, A Lady By Midnight, will also hit my personal bulletproof narrative kinks. Sadly, it doesn't come out until September. Sigh.

I've also been reading The Mighty Thor, at least, whatever volume this is that started fairly recently. Mostly because I wanted the Thor-kid!Loki reunion I was denied in Journey Into Mystery, which I didn't quite get. I've been enjoying it, though Thor on the page doesn't have the same wry adorableness that Chris Hemsworth gives him in the movies. I still like him, though. And Volstagg is a hoot.

Last night, I read the third installment of Spider-Men, and spoilers )

I also read Avenging Spider-Man whatever number, the new one with Carol Danvers. The 'villain' lady kind of reminded me of Misfit. I kept waiting for her to shout DARK VENGEANCE.

I still want a book about Steph and Cass and Charlie and Black Alice, and maybe Tam can come along for the ride, too.

Anyway, I am considering buying the new Captain Marvel on an ongoing basis just to support a book with a female lead, because they like to spout some bullshit about how female characters can't carry books or movies and then they tell us they're making Ant-man, which, just. No. SAY NO TO ANT-MAN. HE IS A WASTE OF SPACE. GIVE ME A BLACK WIDOW MOVIE INSTEAD. Or a Black Panther movie with Chiwetel Ejiofor as T'Challa. Or a Heroes for Hire movie. With Idris Elba as Luke Cage and Daniel Henney as Danny Rand.

I might have a lot of feelings about this. Ahem. Stupid comics. I always knew it would be an awful thing to get involved with. I avoided it for years. Sigh. I still blame Jensen Ackles.

musesfool: sad cap is sad (too sick to pray)
I am trying to write and writing is hard! Wah!

Also, I need new Avengers icons: Natasha! Steve! Steve and Natasha! Natasha and Clint! Bruce and Tony! Tony and Pepper! Thor! Thor and Steve! Does anyone know a good source?

Also, also, links you might not have seen:

[personal profile] marinarusalka on Natasha's characterization in the movie

[personal profile] jenna_thorn on costuming choices for Pepper.

And [personal profile] liviapenn has a great big list of Avengers reaction posts.

Mine are here and here so far. I'm working on answering comments, so feel free to stop by! Though not if you are going to hate on Natasha or Pepper. That I will not stand.

Spoilers for the film, obviously, in all these links.

Also, I'm still taking scenarios for the 15 characters meme if you've got 'em. Some of the ones already suggested have made me nearly bust a gut with awesome laughter. I love that meme.

Anyway. Back to Avengers. Here is a thing - I haven't actually read many Avengers comics (I mean, the full on team ones), so I can't give you recommendations on that front (though I enjoyed Avengers/Invaders because of all the Bucky feels, and Avengers/JLA because of all the crossovery goodness, and of course, Young Avengers, but that's neither here nor there atm), but I can give you one HUGE GIANT ANTI-REC: DO NOT READ ULTIMATES. JUST DON'T. IT IS AWFUL AND YOU WILL REGRET IT. the upshot is basically taking characters you love and making them complete sociopathic assholes. I felt the need for a scalding hot shower afterwards and maybe some bleach. I can't believe the dude on AV Club is recommending it as a gateway to Avengers comics. Ugh ugh ugh.

On the other hand, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Captain America vol. 5 by Ed Brubaker (slight caveat: skip issue 15. just trust me. it's gross and unnecessary), and the spin-off series, Winter Soldier (Bucky and Natasha BEING HOTASS SPIES WHO KICK ASS. WHAT IS NOT TO LOVE THERE?). And then you will know what I'm hoping they do as the second Cap movie. I also recommend Mark Waid's Captain America: Man Out of Time, which is about Steve right out of the ice and failing to handle all his Bucky feels. *points to icon* Sad Cap is sad! Also, it's a miniseries, so there's no great investment. I actually got the hardcover because the art is very pretty.

I also HIGHLY RECOMMEND Captain America: TRUTH: Red, White and Black, even though the art is AWFUL, because we are never going to get that story on screen and it is an important story.

I also have a bunch of Black Widow queued up on my to-read list, and the Loki-centric Journey into Mystery thing (he's de-aged! so hopefully not a genocidal douchebag!), so I'll report back about that eventually, even though I'm not actually disposed to caring all that much about Loki.

(I do recommend Avenging Spider-man, in which Spidey teams up with various other members of the Avengers, but he's kind of ancillary to movieverse interests; otoh, the one where he and Steve team up is a MUST READ. SO GOOD OMG. SO MANY STEVE AND PETER FEELS.)

In other news, I did watch Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes yesterday and have no strong feelings except needs more T'Challa. I also watched Young Justice, and am intrigued at the hints of stuff that happened in the five years we missed, and also what's going on with M'gann (and how nicely Superboy is maturing), though the main story didn't interest me much.

Then I watched Once Upon a Time, mostly to get that Sebastian Stan fix, and I am SO AMUSED that some commenter at the AV Club called him a weedy little man. I got a huge laugh out of that, mostly because it's true. Otherwise, I enjoyed it, but I don't think much of it actually made any sense. I don't even know what those writers are smoking. I want to see what happens next week, though, so I guess they're doing something right. Or hilariously wrong. *hands* I can't actually tell.
