musesfool: ScarJo as Natasha Romanoff (the heights that I have longed for)
i did it all for the robins ([personal profile] musesfool) wrote2012-05-06 08:40 pm

hey, i'm the king of the world

I got home an hour ago and I was thinking I might go and see Avengers again because I don't think I'm ever going to be able to make a coherent post about it, though I loved it a lot and thought it was tightly plotted and well paced with some great Jossian dialogue (with a few obvious clunkers), and how all I can think about is how AMAZING a Winter Soldier movie would be with Natasha and Steve - can THAT be the plot of Captain America 2? PLEASE?

Also, I really, seriously want Steve/Natasha now, and in a way that is not All About Bucky, which is mostly how I conceptualized it previously. Just. That look he gives her after she springboards off his shield is a look of "OH MY GOD HOW RIDICULOUSLY HOT WAS THAT!?" and that will not be denied.

I am also all for some Clint/Natasha comfort sex, because OF COURSE Natasha knows what it's like to have her mind played with (I wonder if all those references to red in her ledger were not just, you know, the blood on her hands, but also the Red Room stuff), and of course, Clint/Darcy, because CLINT NEEDS A DARCY. (I was the odd man out this weekend, because while I really like Coulson and didn't want him to die, I wasn't particularly emotionally invested in him, and better him than Darcy or Jane or Pepper or even Maria Hill, whose death would have had little to no emotional impact at all and thus, not served the purpose at all that Coulson's death purportedly serves, even though it's lazy writing and that is the part that irritates me a lot [regardless of the fact that it was apparently a Marvel mandate and not a Joss Whedon special.] Also, I might just be in denial, but I have a hard time believing that he's actually dead? If it were an actual Joss franchise, I would, but it's Marvel, so...not so much. Right now, my plan for my own writing is to keep him in the stuff I've already started where he plays a small role [the Steve/Darcy fake dating, the Impact Winter sequel, and then just maybe sub in Maria Hill. Or simply do the HANDWAVE. COULSON'S NOT DEAD thing. *hands*] My feeling is, if you can't keep on trucking when half your OTP is dead, you're just not trying hard enough. I speak from long experience there.)

Plus, as [personal profile] angelgazing reminded me, Natasha's "love is for children" line could TOTALLY be about her and Bucky while they were under the Red Room's control. Someone should write THAT story for me, too.

And Natasha and Bruce fic, because Natasha is shaken by him - she can't fight or mindfuck the Hulk and that terrifies her, and I loved that we saw that repeatedly, but she still gets up and gets the job done.

Speaking of Bruce, I also want ALL the Tony & Bruce: SCIENCEBROS fic - they drive off into the sunset together! I want Pepper being tentative at first about having Bruce around underfoot all the time, and then just getting more comfortable with him being there, and maybe there can be some Tony/Pepper/Bruce, because Bruce just needs some hugs and some comfort, okay?

And while I'm there, TONY/PEPPER FOR THE WIN. My god, I LOVED seeing Pepper without heels, in shorts, because that was such a great shorthand for how equal she feels in the relationship now. she doesn't have to armor up with Armani suits and 4 inch heels to protect herself because she's the employee before she's the (girl)friend. She's Tony's partner now (at least 12-15% anyway), and I LOVE THAT. ♥

That is the kind of characterization detail this movie did so well - Coulson's near-mint vintage Cap cards, all of Steve's anger and loss playing out in those punching bags and then his glance around the helicarrier, because this is a situation that feels familiar/comfortable to him (though I still want ALL the deleted scenes of him being emo about Peggy and Bucky), Clint's perch at the very beginning - his eye for patterns and his intuitive thinking in connecting the dots (a door opens on both sides), Natasha's EVERYTHING. JESUS FUCK, NATASHA. If I hadn't loved her already, I would now, but since I did, I LOVE HER EVEN MORE WHICH I DID NOT THINK WAS POSSIBLE. IF YOU DON'T LOVE NATASHA, I DON'T THINK WE CAN BE FRIENDS. I AM JUST SAYING. I WILL FIGHT YOU.

Ahem.

So you should write that for me.

In non-spoilery news, the weekend with [personal profile] devildoll, [personal profile] chicklet_girl, and [livejournal.com profile] girlinthetrilby was full of AWESOME FOOD AND FANGIRL CONVERSATION AND PIE FROM NORSKE NOOK AND AMAZING CUPCAKES. It was also free comic book day yesterday, and DD was volunteering at a comics shop, so we visited her there, and [personal profile] chicklet_girl discovered that they make STEVE AND BUCKY MINIMATES so I bought those. They also had a Peggy Carter set, but she was paired with a random HYDRA agent, as was Howard Stark. If they'd had Peggy and Howard in the same set, that I would have sprung for (and then they could have an OT4 orgy).

[livejournal.com profile] girlinthetrilby pointed out a big 12" Captain America action figure and I was like, "Oh, that's Bucky Cap" and she and [personal profile] chicklet_girl gave me a skeptical look, but it WAS. We turned the box over and it said "James Buchanan Barnes" and his non-helmet-wearing second head had brown hair. BUCKY CAP. I WILL NEVER STOP CALLING HIM THAT. ME AND PETER PARKER. (I named my iPhone Bucky and I use a Captain America shield case for it, and I was like, OMG MY PHONE IS BUCKY CAP and [personal profile] laurificus was just like, "your dorkiness is very cute.")

Now I guess I will get something to eat and then catch up on the TV I've missed since Thursday, even though my head is just totally still in AVENGERS space. I have tomorrow off, so I am definitely seeing it again then.

Just, yes, I want to agree with everything you said here. And especially everything to do with Natasha. I love on her so hard.

Hahaha, so LoFro and I spent all of dinner apres-film proposing various headcanons for the movie-verse, and at one point got derailed over analyzing Natasha and how a a character so deeply enmeshed in a Cold War discourse translates into film a couple decades on. One thing that came up--ScarJo is my age (like, literally birthdays two weeks apart, sez IMDb) but 27 is drastically young for a super spy, especially without an explicit statement about Red Room stuff from the comics. But there's only so old we can plausibly take her, too, so in 1991 when the Soviet Union dissolved she would've been no younger than seven, but probably couldn't have been far into her teens. So even if she wasn't already in a Red Room scenario at that point, I think the crack about regime change wasn't just a joke--a formative life experience for her would've been watching the world she knew fall apart in slow motion all around her. I met people like that in Kazakhstan; it does a number on your psyche, and twenty years on not everyone has fully recovered.

(I also have a lot of feels about her self-correction after stating "I'm Russian" but that might be better spelled out in fic than meta...)

But, yes, in short I feel like there's plenty of time for a Bucky-ful backstory in the late eighties/early nineties for Natasha, followed by several very cynical years freelance, followed by Cliiiiint (who is a whole nother set of feeeeels).

Also, SCIENCE BROS. Particularly the moment when Tony poked him with the stick and Bruce was able to laugh about it. The Bruce/Tony fic I keep stumbling onto is starting to make a lot more sense.

Particularly the moment when Tony poked him with the stick and Bruce was able to laugh about it.

Having read a metric ton of Avengers related stuff today, I think my favorite insight went along the lines of "People looked at Bruce like an unexploded bomb. So did Tony...but for Tony, bombs are some of his best friends."

That is a fantastic line and Google is not coughing up the rest of the story for me. Do you have a link?

That's what I get for paraphrasing. I could have sworn it was from some character essays on this tumblr: http://theumbrellaseller.tumblr.com/, but now I'm not finding it there. So pretty much all I can say is: it's not originally my insight. ;-)

The character analyses are still worth a read and can be found here:

Success! It's actually from a piece of fanfic:

http://icarus-chained.livejournal.com/321095.html

"Actually, it was kind of a relief. Most people treat me like a potential bomb. You ..." He stopped, grinned. "Well. You also treat me like a bomb, a lot of the time. You just also seem to have never met a bomb you didn't like.""

Okay, so, short version of the Natasha Thinks (since my Natasha Feels are mostly "AWWWW YEAAAAH"):

The wheels came off the USSR politically and economically over the course of the 1980s, and the transition to capitalism was handled about as badly as is could've been. So for your average Russian on the street, you had the state which had guided and pervaded their whole life dissolving in front of them, and one of the world's only superpowers brought to brink of being a failed state. Like I said, it's a head job, and there are still plenty of people who view it as a tragedy rather than a victory for democracy or capitalism or Reagan. (Reagan had very little to do with it, point of fact, but that's another story...)

So here's my thinking: if Natasha was already in the Red Room or something like it pre-1991, there was only so much they could've done to shield their test subjects from what was going on. The government was literally out of money and reliant on World Bank loans and foreign aid just to feed people; that would've made life as a sooper sekrit organization very hard. In fact, it would be a very timely update if the Red Room apparatus was sold out wholesale to a private oligarch or the Mafiya; all the other state etnerprises were, or nearly so. (In fact, I have some headcanon for where the Winter Soldier ended up that might be fic-worthy...)

OTOH, if she weren't already under somebody's control, she would've been witness to economic collapse that makes the Great Recession look like a bank holiday. We're talking mass unemployment, even people who were still "employed" not receiving paychecks for months at a time, random utility cuts for sometimes days at a time, people selling their possessions on the street to make ends meet, wheelbarrow-of-currency level inflation, rationing of staple items just as bad or worse than pre-perestroika, etc. In an environment like that, it would make a lot of sense for a family to give away their young daughter to some shady FSB mooks...hell, even today in the former USSR people give away children to orphanages because of debts. Because any hope is better than no hope, right? And Russians as a culture are not good at hope.

Gwyneth Paltrow was gorgeous in the casual wear. (your comment about the shorts made me think of that).

There must be more Sciencebros fic. Please.

Is there data for the Marvel Edit and not Joss-fate for Coulson? Because that would make me slightly less annoyed at Joss for Killing The Nice Guy I Like With A Pointy Object (again).

[personal profile] reasdream 2012-05-13 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The Mary Sue reported that it was Marvel not Joss, too, so it's being widely reported (as much as something which is a spoiler can be widely reported).

the Costumer did SUCH a good job in that film.
