Mathilda is a playable character in Fire Emblem Gaiden and its remake, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. She is the founder of the Deliverance and a legendary knight of Zofia.
Profile
Mathilda is the idealizer and founder of the Deliverance rebel organization. She founded the group with Fernand and her fiancée, Clive, who became the first leader.
Her father was a famous soldier celebrated for his military achievements, and she is the oldest of five girls. Despite being expected to act like the other noble ladies, Mathilda has been training with her father since she was a child. She became intimate with her husband-to-be when they both joined the Zofia army, and their respective noble houses were also on cordial terms. At first, Clive's younger sister, Clair, disapproved of their relationship and tried to keep her far away from him.
At some point, Mathilda was captured by Desaix and was planned to be executed. Her capture left Clive and the rest of the group down, resulting in the newcomer Alm being chosen as a figurehead leader to inspire and raise the morale of the army. She returned to the deliverance after being rescued during Alm's lead. After the war, Mathilda retires from knighthood and marries Clive. If Clive dies, she reluctantly becomes the leader of the Order of Knights of Valentia.
If Mathilda dies during her rescue arc, Clive has a breakdown and regrets choosing Alm as the replacement leader. Clive blames him for losing his lover and other people that are important to him, like his friend Fernand.
Personality
Mathilda is a courageous and driven knight, inspired to fight for the people from a young age, becoming a knight despite expectations being set for her to be a typical noble lady of an esteemed house. Her well-mannered nature sometimes conflicts with her direct, sometimes harsh speech mannerisms. However, she has an unyielding spirit and refused to give up hope even after being captured and held captive by Desaix.
Mathilda is confident in her prowess as a knight, but due to her being very strong and talented, she sometimes worries about how socially acceptable it is to outshine her "lord husband," Clive, on the battlefield. She is often worried about hurting others' feelings and is anxious about how they view her; as a result, she takes criticisms to heart, whether fair or not.
Though Clair disliked her initially, as she normally did for any woman who got close to her brother, Mathilda held no ill feelings towards her and eventually earned Clair's respect and admiration almost as much as Clair does towards Clive. As such, she looks forward to keeping Clair a part of her and Clive's lives after the war and after they marry.

Overall
Mathilda is the best all-rounder Cavalier/Paladin/Gold Knight in Gaiden. While she winds up with the lowest HP and is tied for lowest Defense, she gets the highest Skill, Speed, Luck, and Resistance. She winds up better than Clive in everything except HP. Both Zeke and Mycen are stronger and more durable than Mathilda, but they have significantly lower Skill, Speed, and Luck. Giving Mathilda a strong weapon will benefit her more than the other horse units since she is fast enough to Follow-Up Attack many enemies that the other horse units cannot. While all of the mounted units in Gaiden are solid, Mathilda is good even for a mounted unit and can be considered one of the better units in the game. Zeke is very close to Mathilda in overall power, and they can both be considered the strongest horse units.

Overall
Mathilda retains her title as arguably the overall strongest base Cavalier/Paladin in the game. While her HP growth is still arguably on the low side, her buffed growths mean that she now has the capacity to both hit harder and take hits better than she did in Gaiden, which, coupled with her frequent double attacks due to her good Speed, makes her a fantastic unit to have on the frontlines. Mathilda will still, on average, eclipse Clive in every stat except for HP pretty quickly, and generally only the much later-joining Zeke is capable of comparing to her offensive prowess; however, Mathilda will still tend to double attack much more frequently. Not only that, but Mathilda's base Resistance is surprisingly high, surpassing every non-magical unit (except for Est and Conrad) in that regard, making her a good unit against mages, in contrast with Clive and Zeke, whose Resistance is terrible and pretty much average, respectively. Mathilda also outshines the newcomer Conrad in terms of offense overall, but since Conrad is not on the same path as Mathilda, the comparison does not matter much.
Unfortunately, Mathilda has her downsides, too. Her base Strength and Defense will definitely be lower than most characters at that point of the game, plus it might be hard for her to defeat a unit in one round of combat. While her Strength is not a big problem per se with her very good growth, her Defense might hinder her. Her HP is not particularly good either.
In the end, Mathilda will either easily surpass Clive or be slightly better than him.
